Cabinet Approves 2.1 Billion Baht Upgrade for Sirikit Dam Power Plant

Thailand's deputy government spokesperson Ploytale Laksameesangchan announced that the cabinet has approved the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to proceed with upgrading the Sirikit Dam hydroelectric power plant's fourth generator, with a total investment budget of 2,088.56 million baht. The upgrade aims to improve reliability and security of electricity production while extending the plant's operational lifespan by at least 30 years.

The Sirikit Dam facility in Uthai Thani province is equipped with four generators, each with a capacity of 125 megawatts, totaling 500 megawatts and producing an average of 1,018.12 million electricity units annually. The fourth generator, now approximately 31 years old, has deteriorating equipment and faces challenges in sourcing spare parts for repairs, which could compromise operational reliability and safety.

The authority will selectively replace or upgrade only critical equipment essential to electricity generation, focusing on cost-effectiveness and investment value. This includes mechanical components such as water turbines, speed governors, and intake valves, as well as electrical equipment and control systems including generators, excitation systems, and main power transformers.

The upgrade is expected to reduce maintenance costs and provide better value than developing new generation sources, while extending the plant's life by more than 30 years. Annual electricity output is projected to increase from 242.42 million units to 251.28 million units. The authority plans to fund the 2,088.56 million baht investment primarily through domestic sources, including infrastructure fund mobilization, domestic investment bonds, and revenue from operations.
