Chiang Mai Immigration Arrests Laotian Woman Selling Stewed Duck Illegally
Chiang Mai immigration police arrested a Laotian woman selling stewed duck at a market for working without a valid permit after she illegally re-entered Thailand three years ago.
On August 3, Chiang Mai immigration police, together with labor inspectors from Region 5, conducted a sweep at a market in Mae Hia sub-district, Muang district, Chiang Mai, after receiving a complaint about illegal foreign workers. Officers arrested one Laotian woman on charges of working without a valid work permit despite holding temporary residence status, and for failing to report her employer details to the labor registrar within 15 days of starting work. Document checks revealed the woman had previously held a legitimate work permit with a Thai employer but had since illegally entered Thailand to work as an unlicensed operator selling stewed duck, competing unfairly with Thai workers. The suspect admitted to working at the stall for approximately three years without any legal work authorization. Authorities have detained the woman and referred her case to Muang Chiang Mai Police Station for further legal proceedings.
