Chiang Mai immigration officers, led by Pol. Maj. Wichai Kawichai of Immigration Division 5’s investigation unit, arrested Sun Hao at a hotel room in Chang Khlan subdistrict on 9 October after receiving a tip about suspicious behaviour. His passport showed he entered Thailand on 5 April 2026 on a tourist visa valid until 3 June, later extended under a student visa until 7 August 2026, meaning his stay had expired over 62 days prior to arrest. Chinese authorities had issued an arrest warrant for Sun in connection with an alleged fraud case causing losses exceeding 20 million yuan (over 100 million baht), and he was believed to have fled to Chiang Mai to avoid prosecution. He was charged with remaining in Thailand after his permission to stay expired and transferred to Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station, with authorities preparing to return him to China to face the fraud charges.
