Chinese Fraud Suspect Arrested in Chiang Mai After Visa Overstay
Immigration police in Chiang Mai arrested a 40‑year‑old Chinese man who is wanted in China for fraud exceeding 100 million baht. He had entered Thailand on a tourist visa, later switched to a student visa, and stayed illegally for over two months. The suspect faces immigration charges and will be extradited to China to face the fraud allegations.
On October 9, 2026, Pol. Lt. Col. Witthai Kawichai led a team from Immigration Police Division 5 to arrest Mr. Shen, a 40-year-old Chinese national, in his hotel room in Tambon Chang Klan, Mueang District, Chiang Mai. Authorities said he had fled China to avoid prosecution for fraud involving over 20 million yuan (about 100 million baht). Immigration records showed he arrived on a tourist visa on April 5, 2026, was granted a student visa extension until August 7, 2026, and had overstayed by more than 62 days at the time of arrest. He was initially charged with remaining in the kingdom after his permission expired and will be transferred to Chinese authorities for further proceedings.
