Counterfeit 1,000-Baht Notes Trigger Alert at Nong Khai ATM
On October 7, a Thai man tried to deposit 200,000 baht in counterfeit 1,000-baht notes at an ATM in Nong Khai’s Mueang District. The machine rejected two fake notes, which bank staff confirmed were counterfeit despite resembling genuine bills. The bank seized the notes, handed them to the Bank of Thailand, and warned the public to check money from unknown sources.
Counterfeit 1,000-baht banknotes have been flooding in from a neighboring country. On October 7, 2024, a bank officer in Mueang District, Nong Khai Province reported that a Thai man attempted to deposit 200,000 baht via an automatic deposit machine. Two of the 1,000-baht notes were rejected and ejected by the machine. Bank staff examined them and found the notes to be fake; they look genuine at first glance with similar paper color, watermark and security strip, but feel like photocopy paper and are immediately recognizable as counterfeit. The bank informed the customer, seized the fake notes and sent them to the Bank of Thailand for further action. The customer said the money came from the neighboring country and agreed to hand it over. The bank warned the public to be cautious when receiving money from unknown sources, noting that genuine banknotes have distinctive features unlike photocopy paper, and to report any suspicious notes immediately.
