Thailand Promotes Exercise as Lifestyle for Sustainable Health
The Department of Physical Education announced a nationwide push to embed exercise, sports, and recreation into daily life as a means of building sustainable health and national development. Director‑General Mongkol Wimonrat detailed programs targeting all age groups, from student sports tournaments and senior games to swimming safety projects and disability‑inclusive competitions. The initiative aligns with Thailand’s 20‑year strategy to develop human capital through active lifestyles.
The Department of Physical Education outlined its vision of making physical activity a part of everyday life for all Thais to ensure strong, complete bodies and sustainable well‑being while contributing to national development. It highlighted flagship programs covering every demographic: the annual National Student Sports Competition held February–March across 77 provinces to identify talent; the National Senior Sports and Recreation Games in May for those 60 and older; the Thai Kids Can Swim project to prevent drowning among children under 15; the short‑pants football tournament for ages 14, 16, and 18, alongside volleyball, basketball and futsal championships; youth disability sports competitions to foster fitness, discipline and inclusion; cultural recreation initiatives such as the Royal Trophy‑winning marching band contest and northeastern pong lang performances; and the Thai Martial Arts Conservation Institute to preserve Muay Thai.
