Court Rejects Urgent Petition in NBTC Chair Dispute

The Central Administrative Court rejected NBTC chairman Dr. Sorin's urgent petition to overturn a finding that his part-time physician work disqualifies him from the position, with a full ruling expected within days.

Court Rejects Urgent Petition in NBTC Chair Dispute
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4, 2025, the Central Administrative Court rejected Dr. Sorin Bunyaiphaipruck's urgent petition filed the previous day in case number 1455/2569. Dr. Sorin, the NBTC chairman, sought court review to overturn the recruitment committee's finding that he is legally barred from holding the position because of his part-time physician work. He argued the committee exceeded its legal authority and acted without neutrality or transparency, denying him a fair hearing. He also contended that the committee's decision alone cannot remove him from office, as the committee can only nominate candidates for Senate approval.

The court ruled that no urgent interim relief was necessary before a full judgment. The case remains in pre-assignment stages pending judicial panel appointment. Dr. Suphatra Hasuwannakij, a constitutional development adviser, noted that if the court grants temporary protection, the Prime Minister must delay any removal petition; conversely, without court protection, immediate dismissal becomes possible. The Thai Legal Counsel's Committee concluded on August 3 that the recruitment committee has authority to assess qualifications and deemed its decision final. A court ruling is expected within days. Dr. Sorin should cease his duties immediately due to his original lack of qualifications, Dr. Suphatra added, warning that upcoming NBTC meetings on August 5–6 may be disrupted and critical agendas like the digital TV roadmap remain stalled. Legal scholar Wuth Tingssmit viewed Dr. Sorin's court filing as procedurally sound but noted the outcome depends on judicial interpretation.

Police Chief Orders Investigation Into Allegations Ex-Officer Aided Suspect
4 Aug Khaosod

National Police Commissioner General Kittiphat Phanphetch addressed allegations on August 4, 2026, confirming that police conducted a thorough investigation into the five-murder case involving the suspect. He explained that the investigation began with preliminary questioning, expanded to cases involving foreign nationals, and uncovered additional crimes. The Commissioner expressed regret that a person with such a violent criminal history remains in Thailand but acknowledged legal constraints on police action.

When asked about a witness's claim that the suspect was once a police informant, General Kittiphat said he immediately ordered the Thonglor police station to accept a complaint from the whistleblower. He stated that police are verifying the identity of the alleged officer, noting the informant relationship dates back approximately ten years to 2013-2016. The Commissioner stressed that if any officer is found to have hired criminals as informants, decisive action will follow. He added that the suspected officer likely retired and is under verification by Chachoengsao provincial police. General Kittiphat emphasized that police follow proper investigative procedures and do not favor anyone, but will take action based on evidence if wrongdoing is confirmed.

Bangkok Clinic Sued Over Failed Liposuction Results

Bangkok clinic denies liposuction mistakes, confirming perfect outcomeLegacyA Thai woman sought legal action against a beauty clinic in Bangkok after a liposuction procedure left her with a distorted and wrinkled abdomen instead of the defined six-pack appearance she was promised. The 44 year old woman, identified only as Ying, sought assistance from the Saimai Survive Foundation after spending more than 100,000 baht on the cosmetic procedure. She claimed the outcome differed significantly from the clinic’s online advertisements. Ying said she initially responded to an online promotion offering the six-pack liposuction procedure for 39,999 baht. Believing the clinic was reputable because of its strong social media presence and advertising, she decided to proceed with the surgery. According to Ying, clinic staff informed her shortly before the operation that she would need to pay an additional 70,000 baht. She alleged they warned that refusing the extra treatment would leave her abdomen loose and uneven. Feeling pressured just before surgery, she agreed to pay the higher fee. Photo via Top News After the operation, Ying said the promised six-pack definition never appeared. Instead, she said her abdominal muscles were uneven, swollen and failed to match the appearance she had discussed with the clinic. She said she later questioned the surgeon about the result, but claimed the doctor insisted the outcome was satisfactory. Ying said she strongly disagreed with that assessment. According to Ying, she repeatedly contacted the clinic seeking a resolution, but staff stopped responding and refused to accept responsibility. She also claimed the clinic removed negative reviews she posted on its Facebook page and other social media platforms. Ying later consulted another doctor at a different clinic, who reportedly told her the result would require corrective surgery. She said the estimated cost of the revision procedure was about 300,000 baht. Photo via Facebook/ TalknewsOnline Accompanied by her lawyer, Ying returned to the original clinic to seek compensation for the corrective treatment. She alleged the surgeon maintained that the procedure had produced a good result and declined responsibility, stating that she had signed documents acknowledging the outcome. The doctor instead reportedly offered additional treatment to improve the appearance of her abdomen. Ying declined, saying she no longer trusted the clinic. She also challenged the clinic to publish photographs of her abdomen on its official social media channels if it genuinely believed the procedure had been successful. According to Ying, the clinic refused. Photo via Top News Ying further claimed that several other former clients had contacted her to report similar experiences with cosmetic procedures at the same clinic. The Saimai Survive Foundation said it plans to submit the case to the Office of the Consumer Protection Board, the Department of Health Service Support and the Medical Council of Thailand for further consideration. The foundation added that it is seeking an investigation into the licences of both the clinic and the doctor who performed the operation. The story Bangkok clinic denies liposuction mistakes, confirming perfect outcome as seen on Thaiger News.

National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittarat Panpetch announced on August 4 at Government House that he has ordered the Technology Crime Investigation Division (TCID) to investigate the unauthorized release of personal data belonging to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the Interior Minister, and Interior Ministry officials. He emphasized that while he is not protecting senior officials, he believes people should carefully examine whether such leaked images are genuine, given how advanced digital manipulation technology has become. Kittarat stated that identifying the data source remains challenging and that the Interior Ministry has already denied involvement. He noted that determining whether the leaked images are authentic or artificially created requires thorough analysis from multiple angles. When asked whether victims should file complaints under the Personal Data Protection Act, Kittarat said that depends on investigation results and whether the individuals involved wish to press charges. He stressed the importance of critical thinking in the digital age, where both real and fabricated content circulates on social media, and cautioned against jumping to conclusions without examining the facts.

Deputy Prime Minister for Legal Affairs Pakorn Nilprapart briefed reporters on August 4 that today's meeting marked the final review of documents and evidence in the investigation of fraud in the 2568 local government recruitment examinations. The committee found defects in nearly every procedural step, with involvement from more than 100 people both inside and outside government agencies. He stated the investigation involves senior officials and multiple outsiders, requiring comprehensive re-examination of the entire recruitment process and potential civil, criminal, disciplinary, and ethical action against individuals involved. "This case is not easily resolved, but it must be concluded," Pakorn said.

Police Chief Kittiphon Phetphicharn reported that a 30-day investigation revealed irregularities in the quota request process, quota certification discrepancies, and score alterations during the post-examination phase. The committee found defects before, during, and after the exams that could facilitate fraud. Recommendations will be submitted to the Prime Minister regarding individuals who may face legal proceedings across civil, criminal, disciplinary, and ethical grounds, with follow-up actions assigned to relevant government agencies including the Interior Ministry, Local Administration Department, and Civil Service Commission.

12-Year-Old Singer Saves $1 Million to Build Home for Great-Grandmother

12-Year-Old Singer Saves $1 Million to Build Home for Great-Grandmother
4 Aug Khaosod

Tosapol Himphan is proud of his 12-year-old daughter, known as "Phak Bung," who has saved money from singing and performing traditional Naka ceremonies to build a home worth over 1 million baht for her great-grandmother. The project is nearly 90 percent complete and is scheduled to be finished on her 13th birthday, October 17. Tosapol plans to formally train Phak Bung next year to take on full Naka ceremony performances, as multiple event organizers have requested her services. He aims to have her carry on the family tradition of Lam Lom singing and ceremonial work.

Phak Bung has been saving money since she was 4 or 5 years old, earning rewards from singing performances and working alongside her father at ceremonies. She earns between 3,000 to 10,000 baht per event, which she has been accumulating steadily. The home project was something she promised her great-grandmother, now 80 years old, whose original house—built in 1981 or 1982—had become too dilapidated to repair. Tosapol emphasizes that none of the construction funds came from his or his wife's money; all savings are Phak Bung's own earnings from performances.

When asked if working interferes with her schooling, Tosapol says performances are scheduled mainly on weekends, though she occasionally misses school when event organizers specifically request her. He notes that Phak Bung is disciplined with money, often depositing earnings into her personal savings account. Fans and followers admire her filial piety and work ethic at such a young age. The total project cost, including the house and furnishings like air conditioning units, is approximately 1 million baht, with about 850,000 baht already spent.

Soil Collapse Buries Worker at Rayong Construction Site

A 38-year-old woman was trapped and rescued after a soil pile collapsed into a four-meter-deep excavation pit on Sukhumvit Road in Rayong on August 4, burying her while she worked on a drainage pipe project.

Soil Collapse Buries Worker at Rayong Construction Site
4 Aug Khaosod

At 1:00 p.m. on August 4, 2025, rescue teams from Sawaeng Phorn Kusol Foundation in Rayong responded to a soil collapse that buried construction workers on Sukhumvit Road near Sai Jao Pho Sai Thong shrine in Mueang Rayong district. At the scene, workers were plastering a concrete drainage pipe in a four-meter-deep, four-meter-wide excavation when an adjacent pile of soil, stacked by a backhoe, suddenly collapsed and slid into the pit. Two male workers managed to escape with minor injuries, but a 38-year-old female worker was trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue teams rapidly deployed to dig and retrieve her, performing CPR before emergency transport to Rayong Hospital.

Some local residents have speculated that the accident may have occurred because the construction project did not perform a traditional incense-lighting ceremony to pay respects to the local guardian spirits before beginning work. Residents view this as either a causal factor in the accident or a spiritual warning from the shrine, which is a site of deep reverence and regular prayer in the community. This remains a personal belief held by some community members.

Thailand Attracts 18.5M Tourists in First Seven Months

Thailand received 18.5 million foreign tourists in the first seven months of 2024, generating 896 billion baht in revenue, though visitor numbers declined 3.2% compared to the same period last year.

Thailand Attracts 18.5M Tourists in First Seven Months
4 Aug Khaosod

BANGKOK — Thailand welcomed more than 18.5 million foreign tourists between 1 January and 1 August, generating nearly 900 billion baht in tourism revenue despite a slight decline in visitor numbers from the same period last year, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports said.

Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said Thailand recorded 18,510,243 international arrivals between 1 January and 1 August, down 3.19% year-on-year. Foreign visitors generated 896.2 billion baht in tourism revenue during the period.

China remained Thailand's largest source market with 3,078,486 visitors, followed by Malaysia (2,373,537), India (1,376,433), Russia (1,100,847) and South Korea (679,064).

During the latest reporting week, from 26 July to 1 August, Thailand received 567,312 foreign visitors, down 2.92% from the previous week, or an average of 81,045 arrivals per day.

The ministry attributed the decline mainly to weaker arrivals from short-haul markets following reports of unrest in Thailand's southern border provinces and reduced airline capacity on India-Thailand routes, where seat capacity fell 28.6% year-on-year.

Long-haul markets, particularly Europe, continued to grow, supported by new flight connections, including Dubai–Bangkok (Don Mueang) and Amsterdam–Suvarnabhumi services.

South Korean arrivals increased 19.85% from the previous week, driven by family travel during the country's summer school holidays, making South Korea Thailand's fourth-largest source market for the week.
