The Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom province has exceeded critical water levels following releases from upstream dams, with the latest measurement reaching 12.01 meters on August 13—a 3-centimeter increase from August 12. The overflow has affected eight districts including Mueang, Thatphanom, Naha, and Sri Songkhram, with more than 30,000 rai of agricultural land and rice paddies submerged.

In Thatphanom district, flooding near the dam has affected 10 homes and roughly 40–50 residents, including school children and their families. Roads in villages are inundated to a depth of 50–60 centimeters. District officials have distributed basic supplies including eggs, rice, and dried food. The Songkhram and Uun rivers have overflowed their banks, flooding over 20 homes in Sri Songkhram district, with agricultural damage reaching approximately 20,000 rai there and another 10,000 rai in Naha district.

Other affected areas include Phonsavanh district with damage to 1,495 rai across five sub-districts and 583 affected farmers; Pla Paak district with flooding across seven sub-districts; Renu Nakhon with approximately 80 rai of crops damaged across 27 farmers; Nathom district with roughly 3,000 rai flooded across three sub-districts; and Naga district with 320 rai of rice paddies destroyed. Provincial Governor Adisak Nuisuwanpond and relevant agencies have established a command center to monitor water levels and rainfall continuously, with equipment and personnel prepared for emergency response. Residents in low-lying areas along the Songkhram and Uun rivers have been advised to move valuables to higher ground. Emergency assistance can be reached via the Nakhon Phanom Provincial Hall 24-hour hotline at 1784 or 04-251-1025, or the Nakhon Phanom Municipality at 04-251-1444.

Parliamentary Panel Probes Fake Thai Citizenship Racket as Hospitals Refuse To Testify

A parliamentary committee investigates a fake Thai citizenship scheme involving hospitals, which have refused to testify, amid concerns the scam could threaten national security if widespread.

Parliamentary Panel Probes Fake Thai Citizenship Racket as Hospitals Refuse To Testify
5d ago Khaosod

At 9:30 a.m. on August 13, 2569 at Parliament, Rangsiman Rom, a member of parliament from the People's Party list and party deputy leader, spoke as chair of the House legal affairs, justice, and human rights committee about the investigation into the fraudulent Thai nationality scheme. He described the matter as a major national issue involving corruption and hospital complicity in falsifying identities to obtain Thai citizenship. If the scale of the problem grows, he warned, it could threaten Thailand's security and national policies.

Rangsiman said the committee invited multiple agencies including two private hospitals, the National Police Office, and the Department of Local Administration to provide information. The committee aims to assess how serious and widespread the problem is, whether all cases can be identified, and whether adequate safeguards exist to prevent recurrence. He outlined two main concerns: whether the issue represents organized crime requiring stronger law enforcement response, and whether systemic measures will be designed to prevent such problems from recurring or whether the matter will be forgotten after media attention fades.

Thawee Piyarat, a People's Party parliament member and committee spokesperson, noted that both private hospitals declined to send representatives for questioning, citing insufficient advance notice. When asked if the committee would issue a second summons, Rangsiman said the decision depends on the weight of information already gathered and whether it suffices for further legal action or additional fact-finding. However, he emphasized that the hospitals' refusal to appear sends a poor message, as the committee hearing would have allowed them to present their own perspective and facts. He suggested that avoiding the hearing hoping to escape suspicion has repeatedly proven ineffective and only deepens public doubt. "If the hospitals are confident in their integrity and have good preventive systems in place, and are ready to address what happened transparently and directly, they should not hesitate to clarify before the committee," Rangsiman stated, adding that the committee stands ready to hear all sides openly and fully.

French tourists claim cannabis smuggling gang use free holidays in Thailand to trick themLegacyAt least 11 French nationals, who were arrested in Thailand with cannabis in their luggage, claimed they were deceived into carrying “locked bags” in exchange for free holidays. France’s National Police told French broadcaster RTL that 11 French nationals had been arrested in Thailand after cannabis was discovered in their luggage. The suspects were charged with attempting to smuggle drugs out of the country, with some remaining in police custody under stricter rules now being applied. French media reported that people previously arrested after cannabis was found in their luggage could initially return to France while the cannabis was confiscated as evidence. Under the newer rules, however, suspects who fail to pay a fine at the customs office can be detained while awaiting trial. According to RTL, the reported fine is 30,000 baht, or around 790 euros, for one kilogramme of cannabis. Cannabis smuggling can carry a prison sentence of between two and 10 years. Photo by baona via Getty Images Signature French media outlets also reported claims from the families of several of those arrested that their relatives had fallen victim to the “Thailand plan” trick. According to the families, criminal gangs offered travellers free holidays in Thailand in exchange for bringing luggage back to France. The travellers were allegedly told that the bags contained mobile phones, but the luggage instead contained large quantities of cannabis. AFP reported that a 20 year old French national was arrested during his return journey in June. Thai airport officials found 16.8 kilogrammes of cannabis inside locked luggage that the man said he did not have the password to open. The man told investigators that his trip to Thailand was funded by someone who contacted him through Snapchat. The report did not establish whether he knew what was inside the luggage. Photo by razerbird via Getty Images Signature French media also reported that two other French nationals were arrested in Hong Kong after cannabis was found in luggage they unknowingly carried from Thailand. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs urged French citizens to monitor changes to Thailand’s cannabis laws and comply with local regulations. The ministry is also following the cases of French nationals being held in Thailand and providing consular assistance. The ministry said an investigation would be conducted into the reported “Thailand plan” scheme to identify the people allegedly behind the operation and any wider network involved. The story French tourists claim cannabis smuggling gang use free holidays in Thailand to trick them as seen on Thaiger News.

Cyber Police Raid Homes in Two Provinces, Arrest Youth Over Data Theft

Cyber police arrested a youth suspect in raids across Phrae and Pathum Thani provinces after tracing stolen personal data from government agencies being sold on the dark web, with investigation pointing to additional perpetrators involved.

Cyber Police Raid Homes in Two Provinces, Arrest Youth Over Data Theft

The Cyber Crime Investigation Division raided target addresses in Phrae and Pathum Thani provinces, arresting a youth suspect after tracing IP activity linked to stolen personal data being sold on the dark web, with evidence pointing to additional suspects. On August 13, 2025, Pachon Anantsil, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, filed an official complaint with police to investigate personal data leaks originating from the Department of Land Transport and Department of Internal Administration systems. Initial investigation identified suspicious IP addresses displaying abnormal data-search behavior from three user accounts: Bangkok Noi District Office, Expressway Authority of Thailand, and Surasee Force. The Transport Ministry suspended access for all three agencies and coordinated with cyber police to examine accounts that queried VIP information, while all connected agencies reset passwords across the Department of Land Transport's e-Service system to prevent further damage. Police leadership assigned a dedicated task force to handle the case, with Deputy Commander Thinkorn Rangmatyai as investigation head. Officers questioned relevant staff and IT personnel from both agencies to trace system access patterns and unauthorized entry points. Investigators determined the perpetrators did not directly breach the database but instead hacked user accounts with system access, then extracted data and sold it through Dark Web, Telegram, or Discord platforms after using VIP information to verify authenticity. The task force traced the origin of suspicious IP addresses to Phrae and Pathum Thani provinces, obtained search warrants, and raided residences in both areas, bringing in the youth suspect for questioning. Initial findings and IT evidence recovered during the search indicated the suspect's involvement in the crime and will lead to charges against other participants.

Factory Worker Shot in Head in Ayutthaya; Police Hunt Gunmen

A 33-year-old factory worker was shot in the forehead in Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district early August 13, with police hunting two motorcycle-riding suspects who fled toward Uthai district.

Factory Worker Shot in Head in Ayutthaya; Police Hunt Gunmen
5d ago Khaosod

A 33-year-old factory worker was critically injured after being shot in the forehead beside Rojana Road in Bang Pa-in district, Ayutthaya, on 13 August 2026, shortly after midnight. Police identified the man as Ballang Buathong from Suphan Buri province. He was found unconscious on a pavement outside a used-car garage in Sam Ruean subdistrict at about 00:10. Rescue workers provided first aid and CPR before he was taken to Ratchathani Hospital.

A witness told police that two motorcycles carrying young men in similar-looking clothing arrived shortly before a single gunshot was heard. Both motorcycles then sped away. CCTV footage reviewed by Khaosod English shows a man in a red shirt riding against traffic towards the scene with Ballang as his passenger. Ballang was wearing a factory uniform and carrying a yellow shoulder bag.

After Ballang got off the motorcycle, another motorcycle arrived behind them. Its rider, who was wearing a dark-blue uniform potentially from the same factory, pulled out a gun and shot Ballang at close range. The man in the red shirt then turned his motorcycle around and headed towards Uthai district, while the suspected gunman fled in the same direction.

Investigators said CCTV footage also appeared to show the suspected gunman handing the firearm to the man in red before the pair rode away. Police said they are examining whether the man in red was involved in the attack or had merely brought Ballang to the scene. Bang Pa-in police chief Colonel Phiphob Naputra said officers were reviewing nearby CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to establish the relationship between the two men and the injured worker. Police have not ruled out the possibility that they knew each other before the shooting.

Human Skeleton Found on Khon Kaen Mountain

Human skeletal remains discovered scattered on a Khon Kaen mountain are believed to belong to a young man from neighboring Chaiyaphum province, missing for about a year. Police are seeking relatives to claim the remains for a funeral.

Khon Kaen — A human skeleton was found scattered among rocks on Phu Pha Daeng in Manjakiri district of Khon Kaen province, prompting police to seek relatives of the deceased.

The remains were discovered by villagers collecting forest products on the mountain in Ban Khok Sung, Nangam subdistrict, at around 5 p.m. on August 12.

Pol Col Theerathat Phongsuwan, superintendent of Manjakiri Police Station, led police investigators, forensic officers, rescue workers and a doctor from Manjakiri Hospital to inspect the scene after being notified by the villagers.

Officers found human remains scattered on the ground and among gaps in the rocks. The remains appeared to include most parts of a body, including a skull, a section of scalp with hair, a lower jaw, arm and leg bones and parts of the spine. A pelvis has not yet been found.

A brown blanket with a bear cartoon pattern and clothing believed to have belonged to the deceased were also found nearby. The clothing included a black shirt with the word "DRIVE" printed across the chest. No trousers, skirt, or shoes were found.

Police said they were initially unable to determine the person's identity, sex or age.

During the investigation, officers interviewed villagers who had been collecting forest products in the area. One villager, identified as Tao, said he had seen a young man with golden-highlighted hair resembling the hair found with the remains.

The man was believed to have been around 20 to 30 years old. The villager did not know his name but said he was from Kaeng Khro district in neighbouring Chaiyaphum province. He was reportedly seen in the area about a year ago.

Police said the information was consistent with the lower jaw found at the scene, which was relatively small and appeared to belong to a young adult. However, the information has yet to be confirmed.

All recovered skeletal remains have been collected and sent to Srinagarind Hospital for forensic examination and identification.

Manjakiri police are appealing to anyone who may have information about a missing person matching the description to contact Manjakiri Police Station or Manjakiri Hospital so that the remains can eventually be handed over to the family for a religious funeral.

Nine Provinces at Risk of Landslides After Heavy Rain

Nine Thai provinces face elevated landslide and flash flood risks following heavy monsoon rainfall, with authorities urging residents in foothill and low-lying areas to exercise caution through August 13, 2025.

Nine Provinces at Risk of Landslides After Heavy Rain
6d ago Khaosod

The Department of Mineral Resources has identified nine provinces at high risk of landslides and flash floods following heavy rainfall and is closely monitoring the situation. On August 13, 2025, the Geological Disaster Operations Center of the Department of Mineral Resources warned the public to be alert to landslides and flash floods as high-risk areas are experiencing continuous heavy rainfall. Forecasts indicate that rainfall levels could trigger landslides, particularly in nine provinces: Tak, Chiang Rai, Nan, Phayao, Phetchabun, Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chanthaburi, and Trat.

According to the Meteorological Department's 24-hour forecast, Thailand will continue to experience heavy rainfall in the North, Upper Northeast, Central, and Eastern regions. This is due to a monsoon trough passing over the upper North, Laos, and northern Vietnam, combined with a strong southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Residents in affected areas are urged to be cautious of dangers from heavy and accumulated rainfall, which could cause flash floods and flash floods, especially in foothill areas near water channels and low-lying areas.

Volunteer networks in high-risk areas are asked to closely monitor geological disasters including landslides and flash floods, and to prepare for potential emergencies. If such disasters occur, officials must promptly inspect affected areas to provide reassurance and initial guidance to residents in at-risk zones.

Social Media Uproar Over Father Feeding Spicy Basil Rice to One-Year-Old
6d ago Khaosod

A father sparked heavy criticism on social media after posting a photo of himself feeding his one-year-old spicy basil fried rice and asking other parents in a large parenting group whether their children eat the same way. The post was shared in a group called "New Moms Chatting" with 180,000 members, showing him feeding the toddler boxed rice with chili peppers. The caption read: "Do other people's kids eat like my son? One year old eating basil rice."

After the post went live, numerous members began criticizing the father's actions, arguing that one-year-olds cannot tolerate heavily seasoned food, which can cause mouth irritation, digestive upset, and stomach pain. Notable comments included: "Feel sorry for the child—that's a terrible answer," "My son likes spicy and salty food and won't eat bland food," "I have a child too and have traveled the same way, but I prepared in advance and never fed my child anything like this. It's not food for a one-year-old," "At one and a half years old I still don't give mine this—he'll get used to the taste and risk kidney disease or diabetes," "We understand travel is necessary, but did it have to be basil rice?" "Please stop feeding your son like this. Take time to research nutrition for him," and "As a father myself, I'm worried seeing this. You're harming your child. Do you realize it? I'm warning you out of good intention."

Local Government Exam Results Open Nationwide Through August 31
6d ago Khaosod

Deputy Permanent Secretary Niratn Pongsitthathawon announced on August 13 at Impact Muang Thong Thani that local government exam candidates can now view corrected scores from both central and provincial levels through August 31. After the original results were cancelled due to factual inconsistencies and corrected following approval by the Central Committee for Civil Service Personnel, individual names and scores are being distributed to provinces for their own candidates to view, while a nationwide public access point has also been established at the central Department of Local Administration office.

Regarding the 5,925 names referred for criminal investigation, Niratn stated they are currently with the National Anti-Corruption Commission and police. Once processed and verified, all 5,925 names will be sent to five agencies with formal memoranda of understanding to investigate misconduct. When asked about future recruitment exams for understaffed positions and whether the Civil Service Commission should conduct them instead, Niratn said the department is doing its best and that future exam arrangements depend on policy decisions by authorities. He acknowledged that the department must review its own procedures and improve them to prevent corruption and errors.

Niratn confirmed receipt of Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilpraset's investigative report and stated the department will restructure, revise processes, and reform operations to eliminate fraud and mistakes. He noted that if new policy directs exams to be distributed elsewhere or conducted by other agencies, the department is not opposed and stands ready. He also outlined four players in the position-buying scheme: the Department of Local Administration, contracting universities, brokers, and buyers. While the first two are government agencies that must be protected from loopholes, the department will coordinate with all units to gather information on brokers and position sellers—both government officials and civilians—operating as organized rings across all sectors, and will forward this data to police.

Chainat Province Builds Young Football Talent on Tight Budget

Chainat Province has built a successful football program on a tight budget through youth development and grassroots investment, with local schools and academy scouts feeding talent to the professional Chainat Hornbill club.

Chainat Province Builds Young Football Talent on Tight Budget
6d ago Khaosod

Chainat is a small province with around 300,000 residents, a quiet agricultural area without major natural attractions or the glamour of larger cities. Yet in football, the province has truly found its identity. Chainat Hornbill began their professional journey in 2009 in Thai League 3 (formerly Division 2) in the Northern Zone. In their debut year, they finished third, just missing promotion playoffs. The following year, the "Killer Hornbills" maintained momentum, finishing second in the Northern Zone qualifiers and advancing through the national playoff round to become one of four teams promoted to Thai League 2 (formerly Division 1). In the 2011 season, the club underwent significant changes under club president Anucha Nakasat, who aimed not merely to survive in League 2 but to reach League 1 within a single season. A key signing was "Dummy" Phuwadol Suwannathat for the forward position. He repaid the club's faith by scoring 21 goals, claiming the Golden Boot and leading Chainat to promotion to League 1 as runners-up.

Thereafter, Chainat became a fixture in Thai League 1 for five consecutive seasons. Though never title contenders, the club's survival in the top division on a limited budget was remarkable. With other clubs spending heavily to sign top talent, Chainat operated differently as a grassroots, low-cost team. Even with former Liverpool player Florent Sinama Pongolle attempting to save the team, they were relegated in 2016 after finishing second-bottom. However, they returned to League 1 after just one season, only to drop back to League 2 in 2019, where they have remained.

Today, though Chainat is no longer a top-division club, the people of Chainat continue to support their team passionately, as it remains a source of local pride.

Building on a Shoestring

One hallmark of Chainat's football approach is its emphasis on youth development. The club scouts young players from across the region to feed its academy. Local district schools have also taken football seriously, including Chainat Provincial School (Chainat Hornbill Academy), which won the Seven-Sport Games championship recently, as well as Rajprachanukul 46, Hunkapit, and Kuruprachasart schools. These schools provide platforms for youth to develop fully. As these young players mature, Chainat Hornbill recruits them into the senior squad. Many have progressed to the national level, such as Patipat Phothep, a promising midfielder who has been selected for the Thailand U-23 national team. Another example is "Big" Payak Seephanam, a young man from Laos who came to Chainat as a child, developed his football skills there, and eventually became a key player for both Chainat and the Lao national team.

Football and the People of Chainat

Another crucial factor is that the people of Chainat are equally passionate about football as residents of other provinces. The province organizes football tournaments at village, subdistrict, and district levels throughout the year, supplemented by traveling football events that provide platforms for players of all ages. This creates deep-rooted attachment to the sport from childhood. When families want their children to become footballers, parents provide full support, backed by schools in each district that nurture young talent. Additionally, local authorities assist in organizing competitions.
