Mekong River Floods Eight Districts in Nakhon Phanom
The Mekong River has flooded eight districts in Nakhon Phanom after exceeding critical water levels, submerging over 30,000 rai of agricultural land and affecting thousands of residents across the province.
The Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom province has exceeded critical water levels following releases from upstream dams, with the latest measurement reaching 12.01 meters on August 13—a 3-centimeter increase from August 12. The overflow has affected eight districts including Mueang, Thatphanom, Naha, and Sri Songkhram, with more than 30,000 rai of agricultural land and rice paddies submerged.
In Thatphanom district, flooding near the dam has affected 10 homes and roughly 40–50 residents, including school children and their families. Roads in villages are inundated to a depth of 50–60 centimeters. District officials have distributed basic supplies including eggs, rice, and dried food. The Songkhram and Uun rivers have overflowed their banks, flooding over 20 homes in Sri Songkhram district, with agricultural damage reaching approximately 20,000 rai there and another 10,000 rai in Naha district.
Other affected areas include Phonsavanh district with damage to 1,495 rai across five sub-districts and 583 affected farmers; Pla Paak district with flooding across seven sub-districts; Renu Nakhon with approximately 80 rai of crops damaged across 27 farmers; Nathom district with roughly 3,000 rai flooded across three sub-districts; and Naga district with 320 rai of rice paddies destroyed. Provincial Governor Adisak Nuisuwanpond and relevant agencies have established a command center to monitor water levels and rainfall continuously, with equipment and personnel prepared for emergency response. Residents in low-lying areas along the Songkhram and Uun rivers have been advised to move valuables to higher ground.
