Local Government Exam Fraud Probe Targets 97 Officials With Inflated Scores

A probe into local government exam fraud has identified 97 hired officials with artificially inflated test scores, with police investigating how the scores were manipulated and warning that anyone involved faces dismissal and imprisonment.

Local Government Exam Fraud Probe Targets 97 Officials With Inflated Scores
5 Aug Khaosod

On August 5, the Central Committee for Local Government Employee Competitive Examinations (KSTB) held a three-hour meeting at the Department of Local Administration. Deputy Interior Minister Arttasit Sampantharatna afterward revealed that the committee approved a resolution to rescind fraudulent appointments and issue a new list of legitimately qualified candidates—approximately 12,000 who passed honestly. Those with incorrectly calculated or artificially inflated scores will not be listed, and new guidelines will address how to properly list remaining qualified candidates before presenting the matter to the cabinet on August 6.

Of the problematic cases, 561 candidates who had not yet been hired will not be hired. However, 97 candidates who passed the exam, were hired, and received improperly inflated scores will be handled through a separate process submitted to the cabinet. Police will investigate how and why these scores were raised. Arttasit warned that anyone found connected to fraudulent conduct faces serious penalties, including dismissal and imprisonment, stating: "Whoever is not honest cannot stay. In the end, they will not succeed and will live unhappily."

When asked who inflated the scores, Arttasit said investigators must determine who raised them, who they contacted, and who else was involved—possibly family members, not just the test-takers themselves. He emphasized that all involved parties will face consequences with no one able to escape liability.

Regarding whether Theeruthorn Suphavibulphol, the former local government promotion department director, will appear August 6 to face fraud allegations at the Central Investigation Command, and whether five officials' disciplinary cases can be concluded immediately, Arttasit said the decision rests with the serious disciplinary investigation committee chairman Theeraphattana Katchmaat, director of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. If the committee finds sufficient evidence and no further investigation is needed, it can conclude findings and take action before submitting the matter.

Electric Car Catches Fire While Charging at Nonthaburi Home

A popular-brand electric sedan caught fire while charging at a Nonthaburi home on August 5, completely destroying the vehicle and damaging a nearby pickup truck; preliminary findings suggest the fire originated from the charger.

Electric Car Catches Fire While Charging at Nonthaburi Home
5 Aug Khaosod

Firefighters responded quickly to extinguish a major fire involving a popular-brand electric sedan charging inside a home in Chai Pruk subdistrict, Nonthaburi province, on August 5 at 11:30 a.m. Officers from Chai Pruk Police Station coordinated with Khlong Khoi subdistrict firefighters, who arrived to find the sedan engulfed in flames. It took approximately 10 minutes of water spraying to control the fire, but the vehicle was completely destroyed. The flames also spread to an adjacent pickup truck, damaging its front section and engine bay.

The 54-year-old car owner said he had left the vehicle charging while running errands at Nonthaburi Central Administrative Center that morning, monitoring the car remotely via a mobile app. He was alerted by his girlfriend to the fire and rushed home. "The car was delivered in April 2025," he explained. "Before purchase, I had the wiring inspected and found no problems. The charging unit installed at the dealership was also fine. I'm confused how this happened—there were no prior warnings."

A neighbor revealed hearing a small explosion while inside his home, then spotting thick smoke before flames broke out. He immediately called Chai Pruk Police to request firefighters, fearing the blaze would spread to his property. Within about five minutes, the subdistrict fire truck arrived and rapidly sprayed water to control the flames. Provincial forensic officers later inspected the scene and found the charging unit completely destroyed. Preliminary findings suggest the fire originated from the charger and spread to the vehicle, triggering combustion in the car itself. Detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause.

The morning sessions at 9:00 a.m. featured a business seminar on "Business Opportunities in Myanmar" and a 9:45 a.m. business clinic for potential investors interested in Myanmar operations, both organized by the Thai Business Association in Myanmar (TBAM) and the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI).

The afternoon's highlight ran from 2:30–3:00 p.m., featuring keynote remarks from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Myanmar President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing addressing Thai and Myanmar business leaders. Three concurrent panel discussions followed: "Building a Future-Ready Regulatory Environment for Successful and Sustainable Business in Myanmar" (3:00–3:45 p.m.), "Reimagining Thailand-Myanmar Connectivity: From Existing Links to Future Opportunities" (3:45–4:30 p.m.), and "Unlocking the Next Frontier of Thailand-Myanmar Business Partnership: New Sectors, New Opportunities, New Growth" (4:30–5:15 p.m.).

Founded in 2550 (2007), the Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Association serves as a catalyst for promoting goodwill and understanding between the two countries, particularly at the grassroots level, which forms the foundation for strong bilateral relations.

Thailand Pivots Tourism Strategy to Wellness Economy

Thailand is shifting its tourism strategy from mass tourism to high-value wellness experiences, launching a "Healing is the New Luxury" campaign through 2027 to capture a growing global market now worth $6.8 trillion annually.

Thailand Pivots Tourism Strategy to Wellness Economy
5 Aug Khaosod

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is implementing a sweeping new strategy to tap into the booming wellness economy, moving from a volume-driven model to a value-focused approach that attracts high-spending tourists. TAT Deputy Governor Nidhi Sipaer announced the shift at the Matichon Exclusive Meeting seminar, citing a global shift in tourist behavior toward experience and personal value rather than mere destination appeal. The wellness tourism market is expanding rapidly, now valued at $6.8 trillion globally in 2024 with 7.9% growth, while Thailand commands approximately $42.7 billion in market share, with projections to reach $9.8 trillion by 2029.

To capitalize on this opportunity, the TAT has unveiled five strategic "game changers": Life Economy (health and wellness products and services), Subculture Economy (targeting niche interest groups), Night Economy (extending tourism hours), Circular Economy (environmentally sustainable tourism), and Platform Economy (digital targeting). The authority is also launching the "Thailand Wellness Valley" initiative to develop cities as wellness tourism hubs, leveraging medical expertise and local resources as a new "blue ocean" opportunity for the nation.

International marketing will center on the campaign "Healing is the New Luxury" through 2027, redefining luxury as physical and mental restoration rather than expensive goods alone, using five pillars: Retreat, Ritual, Revival, Rhythm, and Relation. Nidhi emphasized that Thailand's unique competitive advantage lies in its service culture, hospitality, and the warmth of Thai people—a soft power asset unmatched globally. The TAT will leverage its 29 international offices to drive full-scale wellness economy marketing, while acknowledging that success requires close collaboration between government and the private sector in product development, target-market definition, and joint promotion.

Chiang Mai Man Self-Harms After Woman Leaves Him for Another
5 Aug Khaosod

On August 5, Lopburi police responded to a report of self-harm at Wat Nakhon Kosa temple grounds in Muang district. Officers found a man with blood covering his arm and immediately provided first aid. The man, identified as Bote, 29, from Chiang Mai, explained that he had arrived by train on August 4 to meet a woman named "A" whom he had befriended on social media five months earlier. After meeting in person and sharing a meal, he believed their relationship was deepening and gave her over 3,000 baht when she asked to borrow money for a phone. That evening at 8 p.m., when they arranged to meet again, he found her with another man. After they argued and she fled with the other man, he was unable to contact her. Feeling hopeless and seeking her sympathy, he decided to harm himself. Police discovered Bote lives with his grandmother in Chiang Mai and has a documented history of depression requiring ongoing medication. During questioning, Bote showed officers a photo of the woman that he used as his phone wallpaper. He stated he would not harm himself again and did not wish to press charges against the woman, saying he only wanted to return home to his grandmother and would not trust deceptive people anymore. Officers escorted him to the train station and instructed railway staff to look after him until he safely reached Chiang Mai.

Tawee Claims Senate Vote Rigging: 149 Candidates Selected, Not 138

Pheu Thai MP Tawee Sodsong claims 149 Senate candidates were elected through suspicious voting patterns, not the reported 138, after finding 332 ballots across occupational groups with identical candidate number sequences.

Tawee Claims Senate Vote Rigging: 149 Candidates Selected, Not 138
5 Aug Khaosod

On August 5, 2025, Pol. Col. Tawee Sodsong, a Pheu Thai list MP, presented evidence indicating that 149 Senate candidates were elected instead of the 138 widely reported. The discovery centers not on individual fraud but on a voting pattern hidden within the ballots. When this pattern was cross-checked against official election results, Tawee found that 149 candidates from matching numbered sets appeared on published ballots and were elected to the Senate, representing 74.5 percent of the 200 senators elected.

Examining morning-round ballots across all 20 occupational groups, Tawee identified numerous cases where voters wrote identical candidate numbers in all 10 slots, in the same sequence without variation—from slot 1 through slot 10. Some ballots showed minor deviations in only one or two slots while the rest remained identical. Across all 20 occupational groups, at least 332 ballots exhibited identical matching number sets in the same order.

The evidence by group included: Group 1 with 18 matching ballots, Group 2 with 16, Group 3 with 16, Group 4 with 16, Group 5 with 17, Group 6 with 16, Group 7 with 16, Group 8 with 20, Group 9 with 17, Group 10 with 20, Group 11 with 18, Group 12 with 11, Group 13 with 13, Group 14 with 18, Group 15 with 14, Group 16 with 18, Group 17 with 19, Group 18 with 13, Group 19 with 19, and Group 20 with 17 ballots. Comparing morning results with official outcomes, almost all candidates from these matching number sets ranked high in their occupational groups, mostly in positions 1 through 10 or up to rank 15, and all advanced to the national selection level.

TTB Bank Targets 5 Billion Baht in Credit-Score Loans

TTB Bank launches "TTB Drive," a vehicle loan product that uses credit scores instead of vehicle age to set interest rates, offering borrowers with strong payment histories rates as low as 11.11% annually and targeting 5 billion baht in dis

TTB Bank Targets 5 Billion Baht in Credit-Score Loans
5 Aug Khaosod

TTB Bank is overhauling its vehicle mortgage lending standards by replacing vehicle age with credit scores as the primary factor in determining interest rates. According to TTB Bank CEO Thakorn Piyaphan, the bank is implementing risk-based pricing principles through its new "TTB Drive" product for vehicle pledges without title transfer. The new system uses credit scores from the National Credit Bureau (NCB) instead of vehicle age to set rates, allowing borrowers with strong repayment histories to access rates starting at just 11.11% per year, or 0.52% monthly.

The initiative, called the "Good Payer Credit" program, aims to encourage financial discipline by rewarding responsible borrowers with better rates. Previously, TTB applied this approach to personal loans through its "TTB CashTuGo" product and found that over 80% of customers received approval at rates averaging 5% lower than the old standard, benefiting more than 28,600 customers with 5 billion baht in total lending and saving them around 800 million baht over the life of their loans.

The vehicle mortgage market, which includes over 5 million registered vehicles in the system, has traditionally relied on vehicle age for pricing, sometimes resulting in rates as high as 24% annually even for borrowers with excellent payment records. TTB Bank data shows that approximately 77% of customers in this market maintain on-time payment histories and should qualify for lower rates reflecting their actual financial behavior. The new product accepts vehicles up to 20 years old, supports both debt-free vehicles and refinancing from other institutions, and uses fixed rates throughout the loan term.

TTB Bank targets disbursing 5 billion baht through this product to 14,000 borrowers between August and December 2024, expecting to generate total interest savings of approximately 1 billion baht for customers over the life of their loans. The bank is also launching a campaign called "Good Payer Credit—TTB Credit" with the messaging "Pay well, get a better rate than before," covering four types of loans including the new vehicle product, personal loans, home refinancing, and home equity refinancing. An additional promotion called "TTB Privilege—Pay Well, Get Well" offers customers who maintain three consecutive months of on-time payments chances to win gold and other prizes totaling over 600 rewards worth more than 500,000 baht.

This approach aims to shift the mindset from "paying well just maintains your credit" to "paying well earns you real benefits," ensuring financially disciplined borrowers access credit at fair costs aligned with the Bank of Thailand's Responsible Lending guidelines promoting sustainable borrowing and repayment.
