CP Foundation Launches Modern Buffalo Farm Program for Farmer Livelihoods
22 Jul Khaosod

Nakhon Phanom – July 22, 2025 – The Charoen Pokphand Foundation is advancing its cattle and buffalo redemption initiative "CP Foundation: Together Redeeming Cattle and Buffalo as Royal Alms" from short-term assistance toward creating long-term employment and financial security through the Buffalo Modern Farm project, a partnership designed to provide startup capital and transfer knowledge in commercial buffalo raising. The program encompasses farm management, product development, value creation, and online marketing to improve farmer livelihoods while sustainably conserving and developing native Thai buffalo breeds.

The foundation recently held a redemption ceremony and distributed 50 breeding buffalo to 14 farming families in the seventh cohort of the modern buffalo farm project, accompanied by intensive training in farm management, product development, and online marketing to build sustainable livelihoods. The project now spans 11 provinces: Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Phanom, Bueng Kan, Nong Khai, Loei, and Songkhla. The ceremony was presided over by Major Ruayrung Kribut, Deputy Governor of Nakhon Phanom Province, alongside foundation leadership, veterinary and agricultural officials, private sector partners, donors, and community members.

Over 24 years, the CP Foundation has evolved the initiative from simply distributing cattle and buffalo into a comprehensive buffalo-raising ecosystem covering breed development, farm management, value addition, and market linkage—enabling farmers to become self-sufficient and grow sustainably while establishing a foundation for Thai buffalo to compete as a viable commercial business.

The program's core strategy is upgrading traditional buffalo raising into modern farms that apply knowledge, technology, and data for efficient management. Farmers undergo intensive three-day training covering farm operations, digital technology application, organic fertilizer production from animal manure, and product development with online marketing channels to increase income, reduce production costs, and create stable livelihoods while improving long-term quality of life.

Supchai Pannayok, manager of the Buffalo Modern Farm project at the CP Foundation, explained that the initiative began in 2002 in collaboration with the Department of Livestock under the Royal Cattle and Buffalo Bank scheme, originally providing one buffalo per farm family. However, monitoring showed this was insufficient to generate adequate income, prompting evolution into the Buffalo Modern Farm program offering quality breeding stock, knowledge, technology, and systematic farm management so farmers achieve stable, self-sustaining growth.

The project is now in phase three, adapted to suit Thai farming practices with average holdings of 10–15 rai, reducing buffalo numbers to match household labor capacity for integration with primary occupations, creating efficient and sustainable outcomes.

Elderly Couple Fights Loss of Welfare Card Over Vehicle Ownership
22 Jul Khaosod

Police and transport officials have visited an elderly couple in Mueang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, after they lost their state welfare card benefits, despite having received them continuously. The couple—Soad, 64, and Sommai, 73—had their benefits cut when authorities discovered they owned three motorcycles registered in their names.

Deputy Police Commander Sirichai Srichaiapanya of Mueang Station and Chotika Homyok from the Nakhon Ratchasima Transport Office visited the couple's home and delivered supplies while investigating the welfare card case. Chotika revealed that the couple's motorcycles are all over 15 years old, which falls within guidelines set by the Department of Land Transport in consultation with the Ministry of Finance. She confirmed that welfare card eligibility can still be considered even when someone owns more than one vehicle, and that the transport office has filed an appeal on their behalf.

For the husband, who is blind, all three of his registered motorcycles are also over 15 years old. Officials visited his home to file the appeal since he cannot travel easily. Chotika noted that thousands of affected residents have been contacting the transport office daily, so a One Stop Service has been established with all district offices to assist those unable to visit in person. The appeal and eligibility review period has been extended until September 20, 2026, and there is no fee for checking data or filing an appeal.

After reaching the entrance, the suspect parked the car and pushed it into the police station compound before fleeing on the back of a motorcycle ridden by another person. The bomb exploded shortly afterwards. The explosion damaged one pickup truck, while the blast and shrapnel also damaged several parts of the police station building. Photo via Matichon Police secured the area and began collecting evidence as explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers carried out an initial inspection. A more detailed forensic examination was scheduled for today, July 22. Police are still investigating the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible. Matichon reported that following the blast, police, military personnel and administrative officials stepped up security measures across Narathiwat. Officials increased patrols, inspected high-risk areas, checked suspicious objects and deployed drones to monitor vulnerable locations. Security was also strengthened in urban areas, along the border and at other sensitive sites to prevent further attacks and reassure residents. Photo via Matichon In related news, back in late June, two Malaysian tourists were injured in a roadside bomb attack in Tak Bai district, Narathiwat, after an explosive device detonated beside their vehicle. 22 Jul Khaosod

Gulf Development Public Company Limited (GULF) has rolled out the second phase of its 2025 Green Energy Green Network for THAIs project in Wung Kasang village, Pong Nam Ron subdistrict, Klong Lan district, Kamphaeng Phet province. Drawing on renewable energy expertise, GULF has installed a solar power system at the Pong Nam Ron–Wung Kasang early childhood development center to improve health, safety, and educational opportunities for preschool children while also connecting power to the village community hall and sports field, enabling shared benefits and potential income-generating opportunities for residents.

Wung Kasang is an ancient Pakakenyao hill tribe community of approximately 357 people in 110 households located in a valley west of Khlong Wang Chao National Park. Most residents practice agriculture and livestock raising. The village has had no grid electricity; residents light their homes with candles or oil lamps, and those with solar cells use them only for basic lighting. To charge devices or power agricultural equipment, villagers must travel over 6 kilometers to neighboring villages, creating financial and time burdens. The early childhood center, which serves children aged 2–5, has suffered from deteriorated solar equipment, limiting modern teaching methods.

Varuratana Pootueoh, the center's teacher, explained that the 13 students at the facility need advanced learning support during this critical developmental stage. Power shortages have prevented teachers from using printed materials and educational videos, forcing reliance on handmade crafts instead. Poor lighting during cloudy days affects children's eye health, requiring outdoor activities. During rainy season, electricity must be rationed for fans and mosquito control to prevent malaria. The facility's security cameras and emergency radio communication with parents cannot operate reliably due to insufficient power supply.

Thailand Tackles Housing Crisis for 27,000 Railway Community Families
22 Jul Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, also Transport Minister, revealed that on July 22, 2025, he chaired the first meeting of the committee monitoring solutions for housing communities on State Railway of Thailand (SRT) land. Representatives from the SRT, Community Organization Development Institute, SRT Asset Company Limited (SRTA), and public sector joined the meeting to track progress and address housing difficulties for residents living on SRT property—a priority for the Transport Ministry because it affects the quality of life and residential security of tens of thousands of households across the country. Problem-solving efforts must proceed on both legal and land-use dimensions while upholding fair treatment through inclusive consultation.

Pipat reported progress on resolutions from the June 4 meeting, including renewal of 24 SRT land-lease contracts, of which 2 have been completed and 22 are underway, plus the transfer of 10 leases from SRTA to the SRT to secure long-term tenure rights. The committee also tracked remedies for communities affected by rail system development, such as reviewing land-lease rates, resolving delivery delays, adjusting rates for inflation, approving housing projects, boundary surveying, and resolving tax and rent payment issues.

Pipat stated the meeting also discussed continuity of the Cabinet resolution from February 1, 2023, addressing housing for communities on SRT land across 35 provinces, covering roughly 300 communities or 27,000 households. The SRT and Community Organization Development Institute will consult with the public to establish clear implementation guidelines and present them to the SRT board for consideration.

New Zealand Teen Released on Bail in Thai Airport Theft Case

An 18-year-old New Zealander arrested for allegedly stealing a watch at a Thai airport has been released on bail after days in custody and will remain in Thailand awaiting trial in September.

New Zealand Teen Released on Bail in Thai Airport Theft Case
22 Jul Khaosod

A New Zealand teenager accused of stealing a watch at a Thai airport has been released on bail and reunited with his mother after spending days in custody, according to New Zealand media outlet Stuff.

Loukas Rainger, 18, was granted bail of 100,000 baht (about NZ$5,070) after being arrested over allegations that he took a woman's Swatch watch during a security screening at Surat Thani Airport on July 3.

According to his mother, Natasha Rainger, the watch was left in a security tray alongside his belongings. She said Loukas told her he picked it up and put it in his pocket, but later realized he should have handed it to airport staff.

"He's inexperienced, young," Natasha told Stuff, adding that her son had been sick after a long boat trip before the incident and made a mistake.

Loukas was stopped by immigration officers at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 16 while preparing to fly home after a month-long trip in Thailand. Authorities told him there was an arrest warrant related to the alleged theft.

Thai legal documents seen by Stuff stated that Loukas denied all charges during questioning. The alleged offence, classified as theft at an airport, carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.

After his release, Loukas was reunited with his mother, who said he had spent time in solitary confinement, lost about 10kg and had his head shaved while in custody.

The family remains in Thailand as Loukas awaits a court hearing scheduled for September. He is required to report to authorities every two weeks and cannot leave the country during the legal process.

Natasha said the woman who filed the complaint had since wanted to drop the charges, but the case has continued through the legal system.

Officials Gather Evidence Before Nai Thon Beach Land Recovery
22 Jul Khaosod

Natural Resources Minister Suchat Chomklin said on July 22 that before launching the operation to reclaim Nai Thon Beach in Phuket, officials had anticipated that land occupants would deny allegations—particularly claims that they never collected money from tourists or failed to acknowledge controlling public beach areas. Consequently, he instructed staff to methodically gather comprehensive evidence over several months to ensure sufficient proof for legal prosecution, since state resources and public beaches belong to the people and cannot be claimed as private property.

"I knew from the start we'd face people who won't admit wrongdoing, so I had officials collect all evidence in advance to ensure every case has clear evidence," Suchat said. "We'll forward everything to relevant agencies for prosecution to the fullest extent." He added that the Forestry Department has been ordered to document the removal of 26 structures from the encroached Nai Thon area, with plans to strictly enforce the law while building community understanding. He confirmed this operation serves as a model for reclaiming state forest land from business groups and influential figures, with results to be extended to similarly encroached areas nationwide.

So far, 26 items have been dismantled and transferred to the Phuket Forest Protection Unit. Some structures—including photo checkpoints, bridges, and swings—remain under demolition. Structures within military-controlled zones will proceed through legal channels, with the power plant owner expressing intent to demolish voluntarily. Regarding the Naga statue and pavilion tied to public faith, demolition has been temporarily suspended for community consultation to minimize impact on people's feelings, with officials committing to enforce the law while listening to community input for sustainable resource recovery.

Buriram Marathon 2027 Launches with 5.2 Billion Baht Economic Impact
22 Jul Khaosod

Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenkul held a press conference at The Stories Square in Bangkok to announce the Buriram Marathon 2027, a world-standard running event. The ministry outlined its vision to harness mass participation sports events as an engine for grassroots economic growth and elevate secondary cities into Asia's premier sports tourism destinations.

Key attendees included Newin Chidchob, president of the Buriram International Circuit; Race Director Chotchanok Chidchob; Lieutenant General Chakratip Chaijinda, chairman of the Thailand Amateur Athletics Association; and Buriram Province Governor Piya Pidhnom.

Minister Surasak revealed that the Buriram Marathon, certified to international standards by World Athletics, is entering its second decade with full momentum. Over the past ten years, the sports festival has demonstrated concrete economic value to the region.

The ministry has adopted a three-pronged strategic approach based on the marathon's success:

1. Converting "People Power" into "Economic Power": The Buriram Marathon has generated over 5.2 billion baht in circulating revenue over the past decade by attracting domestic and international runners and tourists.

2. Elevating Secondary City Economics: Using secondary cities as strategic hubs to distribute income and foster sustainable grassroots economic growth. Buriram stands as a successful model for sports-driven urban development.

3. Community Participation: The event's distinctive strength lies in local involvement, with residents across Buriram Province collectively serving as hosts, transforming the sports competition into a festival of joy.

"I believe no other Thai province has achieved the level of community participation that Buriram has in hosting a major sports festival," Surasak said. "In this second decade, the Buriram Marathon will transcend being merely a successful running event to become a key platform for attracting sports tourists and a model for other provinces in developing their cities through sports, positioning Thailand as a leading sports tourism destination in Asia."

Beyond sports and economic dimensions, the press conference also featured a donation to the Thailand Amateur Athletics Association and the presentation of charity bib proceeds from the 2026 Buriram Marathon to Buriram Hospital.
