Democrat Leader Urges Government to Accelerate Flood Relief Payments

Decharat Sukamnaed, director of the Future Policy Center of the Democratic Party, says the current flooding crisis has had widespread impact because many residents did not receive clear warnings about the severity of the disaster, resulting in severe damage across both regularly affected areas and new areas not previously vulnerable to flooding.

Decharat highlighted that close attention must be paid to the emergency relief process after the immediate crisis subsides. He noted that relief efforts have historically suffered from delays, unclear guidelines, difficulties in document preparation, and inadequate assistance relative to actual damages. This year's widespread damage affecting unfamiliar areas could worsen confusion and delays in aid distribution.

The Democratic Party has urged the government to implement four measures: First, publish clear aid eligibility criteria and required documentation for each assistance category to reduce confusion and prevent delays. Second, direct government agencies to process and disburse payments quickly, transparently, and fairly, using technology and flood situation data to accelerate and expand coverage. Third, provide compensation fairly based on actual periods affected, particularly for water retention areas and areas outside flood barriers that absorb water for months to protect Bangkok and surrounding regions, potentially utilizing central budget funds as done previously. Fourth, ensure insurance claim settlements for vehicles, buildings, and other assets are handled fairly and promptly.
