Thailand's national Paralympic team received a morale-boosting prize payout of more than 123 million baht for the 5th Asian Para Games, with Deputy Prime Minister Thong Sri Thong Sri affirming the government's full backing.
On October 28 at the Grand Fourwings Bangkok Hotel, the Thai government — through the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), and the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) — held a ceremony to award prize money and congratulate the national Paralympic team after they won 125 medals at the 5th Asian Para Games "IG-Nagoya 2026" in Japan. The total prize fund amounted to 123,650,000 baht to honor and encourage the athletes who brought glory to the country.
Deputy Prime Minister Thong Sri Thong Sri, in his capacity as chairman of the NSDF executive committee, presided over the ceremony alongside Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phanchareonworakul, SAT Governor Prodpran Samanmit, and NSDF Manager Tanukiart Chanchum.
At the 5th Asian Para Games "IG-Nagoya 2026" held from October 18–24 in Japan, the Thai Paralympic team captured a total of 125 medals: 19 gold, 40 silver, and 66 bronze.
The government allocated the 123,650,000 baht as follows: 89,250,000 baht to athletes, 1,000,000 baht to athlete assistants, 16,650,000 baht to coaches, and 16,750,000 baht to sports associations. Broken down by association: the Paralympic Committee of Thailand earned 11 gold, 29 silver, and 55 bronze for 88,925,000 baht; the Thailand Blind Sports Association won 3 silver and 4 bronze for 7,375,000 baht; the Thailand Intellectual Disability Sports Association secured 2 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze for 10,500,000 baht; and the Thailand Cerebral Palsy Sports Association took 6 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze for 16,850,000 baht.
Thong Sri said: "I would like to congratulate the Thai Paralympic team at this 5th Asian Para Games. Overall they exceeded the target with 125 medals. The NSDF and the Thai government must do their duty to give encouragement. We must admire, rejoice, and be happy for every athlete who succeeded. This is one achievement we must support. The truth is, I've said before that disability does not exist in this world if we can enable these individuals to live in society normally like everyone else."
"The government is ready to provide additional support in the future, while the NSDF is a key part of giving encouragement. The government places importance on every sporting competition, not just Para Games but also regular sports — it just depends on how many medals we win. The government has the intention and is happy to provide support. For upcoming events, both Olympic and Paralympic Games, I think the importance will be the same, though the feeling may differ. We see that all these athletes have the determination to compete, even if they don't have full physical ability..."
