Private schools across Thailand are facing a mounting crisis, with approximately 20–30 closures reported in the 2025 academic year, including 4 in Bangkok alone, driven by weak economic conditions, falling birth rates, and owners' decisions to exit the business. Suphaset Kanakul, chairman of the Association of Private Education Promotion Committees, revealed the problem during a recent meeting of the Private Education Promotion Committee chaired by Education Minister Prasert Chantharwongthong. The committee also reviewed the direct-disbursement welfare programme (NCH) administered by the Private Teachers' Welfare Fund, which began in May but has encountered significant processing delays, leaving only 700 participating hospitals instead of the target 1,000 nationwide. The Education Ministry pledged to consult with the Public Health Ministry to resolve the issue. The direct-disbursement system allows private teachers to claim health benefits of up to 150,000 baht per person per year through an online platform managed by the National Health Security Office (NHSO). This benefits private teachers by providing convenient, rapid access to services and reducing out-of-pocket expenses, while standardizing hospital billing procedures and improving payment transparency. Beyond economic and demographic pressures, some closures reflect family decisions to discontinue operations entirely.
