Election Commission Faces Court Test Over Parliamentary Fraud Allegations

Thailand's Election Commission faces a critical decision after a reversal by its arbitration panel cleared 229 suspects—including 138 sitting MPs and the current prime minister—of parliamentary fraud allegations that an earlier investigativ

Election Commission Faces Court Test Over Parliamentary Fraud Allegations
26 Jul Khaosod

This high-profile case alleges electoral fraud involving 229 accused individuals, of whom 138 are sitting MPs. The investigation has dragged on for over two years across three administrations without resolution. The most progress came under Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and acting PM Bhumi Thaweechai, when the 26th investigative panel, chaired by Deputy Secretary-General Chanin Noi Lek, recommended prosecution of all 229 suspects in coordination with the DSI. However, upon government transition, the full Election Commission established a 36th arbitration subcommittee to reconsider the findings. On March 12, 2025, that subcommittee reversed course, declaring all 229 accused not guilty.

The full Election Commission now must choose which conclusion to follow and whether to refer the case to the Supreme Court for judicial review. Private sector figures, including Yingluck Shinawatra ally Atthajahn Aishannon of iLaw, have submitted letters to the opposition leader exposing suspicious conduct by nine individuals. Though not new information, the revelations have reverberated because the accused include the current prime minister. Bhumjaithai party members have responded with defamation lawsuits against the whistleblowers, despite requests for mature, factual discussion.

Ultimately, the case will be tested in court. Only judicial proceedings can definitively establish whether the accusations constitute defamation or reflect genuine electoral misconduct. Full disclosure during trial may expose broader patterns and reveal who stood behind contested actions. The court system remains Thailand's most credible institution to prove whether rule of law and constitutional governance truly exist in the country.

Thailand Discovers Rare Bat Species for First Time

Thailand has discovered the Hipposideros rotalis bat species for the first time in the country within Bueng Kan province's Sam Wale Stone Forest, a finding that expands knowledge of the nation's biodiversity.

26 Jul Khaosod

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin announced on July 26, 2025, that Thailand has discovered the Hipposideros rotalis (Laotian Leaf-nosed Bat) for the first time within the country. The discovery was made in the Sam Wale Stone Forest recreation area in Bueng Kan province, a significant finding that underscores the government's ongoing commitment to natural resource conservation and biodiversity protection.

The discovery is the result of work by the Forestry Research and Development Bureau under the Forest Department, conducted as part of a biodiversity survey project for vertebrate animals in the Sam Wale Stone Forest area. The research team, supported by the National Science and Technology Development Agency, began surveys in early 2025 and identified this bat species for the first time in Thailand, despite previous reports indicating it was found only in Laos.

Minister Suchat emphasized that the discovery reflects the ecological abundance of the Sam Wale Stone Forest ecosystem and provides valuable scientific data for understanding Thailand's biodiversity. Although this bat species is classified as having low extinction risk, the finding confirms that Thailand's forests retain significant potential for discovering scientifically important species in the future.

"The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment prioritizes surveying and conserving newly discovered wildlife and plant species because they reflect the completeness of our national natural resources. We will continue forest management alongside research support to preserve biodiversity and pass on rich natural resources to future generations," the minister said.

The Forest Department plans to strengthen management of the Sam Wale Stone Forest recreation area and continue supporting biodiversity research to generate new knowledge and enhance the effectiveness of Thailand's natural resource conservation efforts.

Bus Captain Uses Megaphone to Clear Blocked Bus Stops

A Thai Smile Bus captain on Bangkok's Route 104 went viral for using a megaphone to tell taxis to leave bus stops, citing safety concerns after a previous accident and to protect passengers boarding in traffic.

26 Jul Khaosod

A bus captain with Thai Smile Bus operating Route 104 in Bangkok went viral after using a megaphone to ask a taxi driver to move their vehicle from a bus stop near Central Ladprao. The captain, identified as "Gigi," explained that she resorted to the megaphone approach after previously being involved in an accident when a taxi occupied a bus stop, which forced her to file a police report. She said the tactic was safer than leaving the bus herself, as it kept her available to respond to traffic changes while ensuring passenger safety, and she plans to continue using it if the problem persists. Gigi emphasized that blocking bus stops forces passengers to board or exit in traffic lanes, creating serious safety risks, and called on authorities to manage the issue rather than leaving it to bus drivers. She expressed sympathy for taxi drivers working similar jobs but urged them not to linger at bus stops unnecessarily, noting the problem affects many public transport operators citywide.

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT — The Fine Arts Department has opened a permanent exhibition on Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat, following its recognition as Thailand's sixth cultural World Heritage site, while Chiang Mai is being eyed as the country's next potential addition in 2027.

Phanombut Chandrachoti, director-general of the Fine Arts Department, said Wat Phra Mahathat had put Thailand in the global spotlight as the country's sixth cultural World Heritage site.

He said the recognition was expected to attract a surge of Thai and foreign tourists, bringing significant economic benefits to the area.

The Fine Arts Department will continue working with Nakhon Si Thammarat authorities to conserve and restore Wat Phra Mahathat and introduce measures to ensure its preservation meets UNESCO requirements. Any new construction, including shops and other facilities, must also be carefully planned to ensure it does not diminish the site's cultural value, he said.

"I would like to congratulate the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat and all Thais. This is the third consecutive year that we have received World Heritage recognition," Phanombut said. "Hopefully, we will have another piece of good news in 2027."

Under the proposed timeline, Chiang Mai is expected to be submitted for consideration after being included on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2015.

Phanombut said several other Thai sites have also been placed on the Tentative List and could potentially be considered in the future.

He expressed hope that the World Heritage recognition would bring more visitors to Wat Phra Mahathat and encourage everyone to help preserve the temple and its sacred relics for future generations.

Police launched an investigation after receiving a report on July 26, 2025, at 3 p.m. about a man found wounded and dead inside a rental home in Nong Prueai subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri province. Officers from Nong Prueai Police Station, led by Deputy Inspector Siriporn Kongpetchsakdi, rushed to the scene with additional investigators and rescue workers from the Swang Buriprom Foundation relief unit in Pattaya.

The incident occurred at a single-story detached house located behind a large sports club and tennis court. Inside the bedroom, police found the body of a 64-year-old man covered with a blanket. The deceased was a senior tennis player and beach tennis representative of Thailand's national team, as well as a prominent manager and coach at a well-known tennis facility in Pattaya. He had wounds on his left elbow, and a kitchen knife approximately one foot long was found on the head of the bed.

Family members explained that they had lost contact with the victim and asked the tennis facility staff to check on him. They found the bedroom door locked from inside and had to use a spare key to enter. The deceased's brother disclosed that two days before his death, the victim had called expressing concern about a former student and tennis player who had separated from him. According to the brother, the student had recently displayed aggressive and disobedient behavior, despite the victim having raised and trained him well. It remains unclear whether the student is connected to the death.

Police have sent the body for autopsy and are investigating whether the former student was involved in the incident to determine if criminal charges should be filed.

Pheu Thai Denies Plans to Scrap 30-Baht Health Scheme

Pheu Thai party denies plans to eliminate Thailand's 30-baht healthcare scheme, affirming commitment to the universal health insurance system while acknowledging the need for reforms to address sustainability challenges.

Pheu Thai Denies Plans to Scrap 30-Baht Health Scheme
26 Jul Khaosod

Pheu Thai party leader Natthapon Rueangpanya issued a statement on July 26 via Facebook clarifying that rumors of the party planning to scrap the 30-baht healthcare program are false. He emphasized that Pheu Thai has no intention of eliminating the 30-baht scheme or the universal health insurance system, which guarantees broad access to public health services for all citizens regardless of income.

Natthapon described the gold card system as crucial for public health, enabling all Thais to access comprehensive healthcare regardless of their financial status. He acknowledged that while the system is internationally recognized as a success of Thai public health, all stakeholders currently agree it faces multiple challenges that must be addressed now to prevent long-term damage to healthcare providers like hospitals and medical staff, as well as to patients.

The Pheu Thai leader stated that the party supports amending the National Health Security Act to ensure the system is sustainable and maximally efficient without reducing public benefits or increasing patient burden. He reaffirmed that Pheu Thai will not support any law that diminishes public health rights or places greater financial strain on people seeking healthcare. The party will review all proposals, including the government's draft bill, before making a final decision and expressed readiness to work with all stakeholders to reform the universal health insurance system in the best interest of the public.

Thai Woman Arrested in Japan After Drugs Found in Luggage
26 Jul Khaosod

The parents of a 28-year-old Thai woman detained at Fukuoka Airport in Japan after crystal methamphetamine was allegedly found hidden in a coffee packet have appealed for authorities to investigate the person who hired her to carry the parcel. The woman, identified as Juthathip, 28, travelled to Japan on 11 July with her 28-year-old boyfriend, Sarawut, and another friend. The three reportedly worked as freelance luggage carriers, transporting goods for Thai people living in Japan.

Upon arrival at Fukuoka Airport on 12 July at around 07:00, Japanese authorities searched their luggage and allegedly found crystal meth hidden inside a coffee packet belonging to Juthathip. She was subsequently detained. Her parents, Thanatsak, 53, and Kanyavee, 45, said they believed their daughter may have been deceived into carrying the drugs. They also urged relevant authorities to investigate whether the person who arranged for the parcel to be transported to Japan was part of an organised operation.

Sarawut said Juthathip had created a Line group called THIENTHIEN SHOP last year to offer a luggage-carrying service for Thai people living in Japan and those wishing to send goods there. On 10 July, a Line user named "ing ing" contacted the group and asked Juthathip to carry a parcel to Japan. The goods, weighing about 12kg, were packed in a brown box sealed tightly with tape.

Sarawut said he was unsure whether his girlfriend had opened the box to inspect its contents. The same customer had previously hired her to transport goods in May, so they did not initially suspect anything unusual. After the group arrived in Japan, airport officials questioned all three travellers. Sarawut and his friend were questioned from around 08:00 to 19:00 before being released, while Juthathip remained in custody. They were not initially told what offence she was suspected of committing.

The following day, Sarawut contacted the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Fukuoka and was told to wait for Japanese police to provide further information as the investigation was still ongoing. The consulate later informed the family that a stimulant substance had been detected, although it was initially unclear which item it had been found in.

On 22 July, the family received a notice from the consulate stating that crystal meth had allegedly been found hidden inside a coffee packet. The group had carried a total of nine boxes to Japan. Customers collected all the parcels except the one sent by the Line user "ing ing", who did not contact them to collect it and subsequently blocked their communication channels.

The customer had paid Juthathip 3,600 baht for the service. The payment was reportedly made from an account under the name HO THI MAI. Kanyavee said the family was informed by the Thai consulate on 22 July that her daughter had been arrested at Fukuoka Airport on suspicion of importing crystal meth. Shocked by the news, the family went to Bang Bua Thong Police Station in Nonthab.

26 Jul Khaosod

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — On July 26, 2026, Plai Duan, a wild elephant frequently spotted venturing outside Khao Yai National Park in search of food, was seen rummaging through a local resident's home early Sunday morning.

A video posted on Facebook by Prathap Wang Lik Klang, a volunteer involved in directing wild elephants back into Khao Yai National Park, showed Plai Duan foraging outside the park before entering a house in Mu Si subdistrict, Pak Chong district, in search of food.

The incident reportedly occurred around 06:00 as the elephant was apparently heading back into the park after spending time foraging outside its boundaries. However, Plai Duan appeared to make a brief stop at the house to look for food before continuing on its way.

Plai Duan is one of several wild elephants from Khao Yai National Park that regularly venture outside the park to search for food, with such sightings occurring almost daily.

The problem of wild elephants leaving the park in search of food has persisted for many years. Authorities and relevant agencies are working to find sustainable solutions to reduce conflicts between local communities and wild elephants and enable people and elephants to coexist.

Indian Passenger Arrested at Suvarnabhumi with 6kg of Etomidate

An Indian passenger was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport with 6kg of etomidate, a controlled anesthetic increasingly used in "zombie vapes" that can cause seizures, paralysis and death.

Indian Passenger Arrested at Suvarnabhumi with 6kg of Etomidate
26 Jul Khaosod

BANGKOK — Thai customs officials have arrested an Indian passenger at Suvarnabhumi Airport for allegedly smuggling around 6kg of etomidate, a controlled substance reportedly used in so-called "zombie vapes." Phanthong Loykulnant, director-general of the Customs Department, said on Sunday that officers from the Suvarnabhumi Airport Passenger Control Customs Office, together with the airport's Investigation and Suppression Division, searched and arrested an Indian male passenger who had travelled from Mumbai, India, to Thailand.

A search revealed Category 2 psychotropic substance etomidate with a total weight of approximately 6,000 grammes including packaging, valued at more than 4.2 million baht. The alleged smuggling violates Thailand's Narcotics Code, the Customs Act of 2017 and other relevant laws.

Etomidate is a short-acting anaesthetic used exclusively in medical settings. It was previously classified as a specially controlled drug before being upgraded in late July 2025 to a Category 2 psychotropic substance, listed in the same category as ketamine. Authorities have raised concerns about its alleged use in e-cigarette liquids, sometimes referred to as "zombie vapes" or "K vapes."

The substance can affect the brain rapidly, initially causing a dream-like state, detachment from reality and euphoria. However, consuming large amounts can cause irregular heart rhythms, seizures, temporary paralysis and respiratory depression, potentially leading to unconsciousness, shock or death. The Customs Department warned the public and young people about the serious, potentially life-threatening dangers associated with e-cigarettes containing such substances.

26 Jul Khaosod

A tragic incident has claimed the lives of seven-year-old twin boys who drowned in a rice paddy pond. The incident occurred on the evening of July 25 in Muban 7, Ron Thong Subdistrict, Satuk District, Buriram Province, shocking both the family and the local community. The twin boys were beloved by all, particularly by their grandmother, 60-year-old Nang Uea, who raised them from childhood and has been weeping constantly since the tragedy.

Today, the family held a merit-making ceremony for the two boys. Their mother, Jitkannya, 29, who was working in Chachoengsao Province, returned home in a state of profound grief. Upon hearing the news, she rushed back immediately, hoping throughout the journey that the reports might not be true. When she arrived home, she found both her sons already laid in their coffins.

"I am heartbroken," the mother said. "I had spoken with my boys just hours before. I constantly reminded their grandmother to watch them carefully around water and fire, and she did. The boys always told me their grandmother had forbidden them from playing in water or with fire. I never imagined something like this would happen. I am devastated that my sons have passed away before their time."
