On October 27, 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Prechasak Sakyapricha, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) of Ban Dan Police Station, Buriram province, received a report from the village headman of Moo 8, Prasat subdistrict, that a villager had fallen into the community well. He coordinated with the Prasat Subdistrict Municipality rescue team to investigate.
The incident occurred at the entrance to Talad village, beside a concrete road. A handcart and water containers were found next to the well, and a drinking water bottle was floating inside. Villagers brought a pump to remove water from the well before discovering the body of Saman, 52, lying dead at the bottom. Officials and villagers used rubber straps to carefully retrieve the body. A preliminary examination found no signs of foul play.
Sombat Yongram, Deputy Mayor of Prasat subdistrict, revealed the well is nearly 3 meters in diameter, over 20 meters deep, and more than 60 years old. Villagers from the community and nearby areas regularly draw water from it for drinking and cooking, using an iron ladder to climb down.
The deceased's mother, 74-year-old Puan Yongram, said she lived with her two sons. The victim suffered from epilepsy and had just been discharged from Ban Dan Hospital three days prior to recuperate at home.
Before the incident, the household's drinking water ran out. She had forbidden her son from fetching water from the well, telling him to drink rainwater stored in three large jars instead. However, he said the rainwater did not taste as good as the well water, which he was accustomed to drinking.
Mrs. Puan believes her son may have secretly gone to draw water from the well, suffered a seizure, and fell in. With no witnesses and the well's depth exceeding 20 meters, he drowned. The family initially accepted the cause of death, and officials handed over the body for religious funeral rites.
