A 16-year-old boy in Shanghai ordered a freshwater crocodile through an online platform for 100 yuan (approximately 450 baht) out of curiosity, but the plan backfired when the reptile escaped from its container overnight, alarming the entire household.

When the father, surnamed Chen, received the package, he was shocked to find a nearly half-meter-long crocodile with its mouth wide open and thrashing violently. The cardboard box had been bitten through, and the fabric bag inside was punctured with holes.

Concerned about the crocodile's danger, Mr. Chen placed it in a heavy sack and left it on the building's fire escape. However, fearing the animal might suffocate, he didn't seal the sack tightly.

The next morning, when Mr. Chen checked on it, the sack was empty. He immediately began searching the fire escape, starting from the 22nd floor, until he found the young crocodile hiding in a stairwell corner on a lower floor. He promptly notified authorities to capture it before the animal was transported to Shanghai's wildlife rescue and conservation center.

Following the incident's exposure, numerous internet users called on online shopping platforms to impose stricter regulations on selling dangerous animals. Critics argued that buyers should take responsibility for their decisions and should not purchase exotic animals merely out of curiosity or novelty, then abandon them when unable to care for them.

Experts recommend that parents educate children thoroughly about pet ownership before making the decision, considering environmental conditions, care costs, and long-term responsibility. They stressed that pet ownership is not simply satisfying temporary desires but rather a commitment to another life, and hasty decisions can have long-lasting impacts on both the owner, the animal, and society.

A proposal to dissolve the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) by Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, former parliamentary speaker and current advisor to the Democrat Party and Prime Minister, has triggered considerable pushback. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul rushed to clarify his position, insisting that ISOC cannot be disbanded due to its long historical significance to Thailand.

The controversy began during a budget committee meeting where Wan Noor criticized ISOC's operations, saying its mandate was unclear, its budget excessive, and its work duplicated other agencies' efforts. He questioned what distinctive accomplishments ISOC has achieved, noting that the only notable action in recent months was the shooting of a member of parliament.

Wan Noor challenged whether shooting lawmakers should fall under ISOC's purview, pointing out that arrests have been made and cases are proceeding through courts using ISOC vehicles, weapons, and personnel. He characterized the shooting incident involving MP Kamlak Leewamao as a deeply troubling reflection of ISOC's actual performance.

Wan Noor also noted that when he asked southern MPs what they feared most, they cited ISOC itself—a concerning revelation given that even parliamentarians are being shot. He questioned what security citizens could expect under such circumstances.

On July 11 at the Central Fraud and Malfeasance Court on Railway Road, the Metropolitan Police Command presented findings from an operation dismantling the "Pho Thip-Mae Thip" fake birth notification network. Suspects—both Thai and Chinese nationals—are accused of creating fraudulent documents to secure rights for foreign children, with government officials and medical staff implicated. NAKHON SAWAN — 11 July 2026, Police have charged a former monk in Nakhon Sawan after he admitted striking a four-month-old Bangkaew puppy at a temple, following public outrage over surveillance footage that allegedly showed repeated incidents of animal abuse.

The case began after videos circulated widely on social media showing a monk using a stick to beat a dog at Wat Khao Kaeo in Phayuha Khiri district. The footage sparked widespread criticism and prompted the Watchdog Thailand Foundation to work with police and local authorities to investigate.

On 10 July, the acting abbot ordered the monk to leave the monkhood within 24 hours and vacate the temple.

Police, administrative officials and representatives from Watchdog Thailand returned to the temple on 11 July to question the suspect, who has since been identified as former monk Kanchanasin, 38.

The suspect admitted hitting the puppy, named Hong, with a small bamboo stick but insisted he was disciplining the animal after it defecated on his bedding and denied intending to abuse it.

Despite the explanation, the Watchdog Thailand Foundation filed a complaint alleging animal cruelty. The foundation removed Hong, along with several other dogs and cats from the temple, so veterinarians could examine them for injuries. The examination results will be submitted as evidence in the case.

Investigators said the suspect also admitted having previous convictions for assault and drug-related offences.

Several monks at the temple told reporters that the former monk had lived at the temple for more than a year and allegedly displayed aggressive and unpredictable behaviour. They claimed he often rescued stray dogs and cats but later abused them.

They also alleged that surveillance cameras captured multiple incidents of animal abuse, including one video showing a dog allegedly beaten to death. Police said they are examining nine video clips as part of the investigation.

Watchdog Thailand said Hong appeared extremely fearful of people and was showing signs of an injury to its right hind leg, leading volunteers to believe the puppy may have been abused repeatedly.

The foundation said it plans to assume ownership of the rescued animals and arrange permanent homes for them after legal procedures are completed.

Police said they are continuing to gather veterinary reports, video evidence and witness statements before proceeding under Thailand's Animal Cruelty Prevention and Animal Welfare Act and other relevant laws.

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthummaphan announced that a Thai delegation will travel to the United States on July 15-17, 2025, to negotiate trade matters under Section 301 and Section 122 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974, with Section 122 set to expire on July 24, 2025. Suphajee outlined several non-negotiable positions Thailand will maintain, including refusing to lower beef standards as the U.S. has requested, and insisting on freedom to trade with nations like China without U.S. restrictions. Thailand will also propose exempting six product categories from tariffs, including jasmine rice, emphasizing to the U.S. that tariff increases would directly impact American consumers' food prices, as these are goods the U.S. cannot produce domestically and difficult to source elsewhere.
