Ex-Abbot and Woman Held for Fraud, Bail Opposed

Police remanded former abbot Somchai and Sikaae into custody at the Corruption Court Region 1 on September 11, 2569, with prosecutors opposing bail. Both suspects declined to answer any questions from reporters. Somchai, the former head of Phutthai Sawan Temple in Ayutthaya province, faces charges of embezzling 92 million baht from the temple. Sikaae, a woman closely associated with Somchai, was also detained. Officers seized large quantities of cash and gold during the raids.

According to the Anti-Corruption Division chief, police investigated violations of monastic discipline and temple embezzlement. The scheme allegedly involved transferring money into personal accounts while issuing receipts in the temple's name. Two financial trails were identified: 2.8 million baht from accommodation rentals and 89 million baht from donations earmarked for temple repairs—totaling 92 million baht. However, the temple's financial records show no deposits, indicating deliberate fraud. Police obtained warrants and conducted raids at six locations across four provinces.

Authorities seized assets valued at 215 million baht, including 144 million baht in Thai and foreign currency, 1,066 baht in gold bars and jewelry, religious artifacts, and land titles. When escorted from the police station at 1 p.m., Somchai wore white clothing, a hat, and rings, while Sikaae wore a blue t-shirt and jacket. Both appeared visibly distressed as they were transferred to the regional corruption court facility in Saraburi province. When journalists attempted to question them about their alleged actions and their feelings, neither responded, instead lowering their heads and quickly boarding the vehicle.

Prosecutors oppose bail release, citing the enormous damage caused by the case and concerns that the suspects might attempt to flee or interfere with witnesses and evidence.
