Police have arrested former abbot Somchai (Atichoti Dhammavaro), the former head of Putthaisawan Temple in Ayutthaya province, on suspicion of embezzling 92 million baht from temple funds. He was apprehended along with his close associate Punvee (also known as Sikha). Officers seized substantial cash and gold, and video evidence showed drug use between the abbot and his companion.
On September 11, 2026, police commanders announced the results of the arrest operation. Deputy Police Commander Nat Chakdi Chaunasat stated that the operation was conducted transparently and systematically. The case was transferred to the Central Investigation Police following initial reports in October, and the investigation continues. Police emphasized that the individual's behavior is unrelated to Buddhist teachings, institutions, and traditions—it reflects only the actions of one person.
Police confirmed that the 92 million baht never entered the temple's account. Initial asset seizures exceeded 100 million baht, and investigations are expanding to determine the origin and nature of all funds and assets.
An initial tip came around July 15 from a concerned citizen alleging that the abbot engaged in misconduct and abuse of his position. Investigation was challenging due to the temple's prominent patrons including politicians, officials, merchants, soldiers, and police. Two financial channels were identified: first, charity certificates issued for 22 amulet rental items totaling 2.8 million baht; and second, charity certificates for temple maintenance amounting to 89 million baht. However, inspection revealed none of this money entered the temple's bank account, confirming suspected embezzlement. Police obtained an arrest warrant from the Criminal Court, First Division.
On September 10, officers conducted raids at six locations and seized converted assets worth over 215 million baht hidden in monks' quarters, including Thai and foreign currency, gold bars, ornamental gold, Buddhist amulets, and property deeds. Police urged people who donated funds used contrary to purpose to come forward with information and called on senior monks to halt any similar misconduct immediately.
