Former Abbot Arrested Over 92-Million-Baht Temple Embezzlement
A former abbot of an Ayutthaya temple was arrested for allegedly embezzling over 92 million baht by diverting temple funds into personal accounts and transferring them to associates to hide the theft.
The Anti-Corruption Division arrested Phra Wachirayana, former abbot of Wat Put Thaithawon in Ayutthaya Province, on charges of embezzlement, abuse of power, and money laundering. Police allege he diverted temple funds into personal accounts before transferring them to close associates to obscure a loss exceeding 92 million baht. He was arrested at the temple on September 10.
Police Lieutenant General Natthsak Chaownasaket, commander of the Anti-Corruption Division, said the investigation began in July when an unnamed disciple provided investigators with video evidence, documents, and information about suspicious financial movements. Police conducted secret inquiries for two months before obtaining the arrest warrant, partly because the suspect is a senior and respected monk. Authorities have seized cash, documents, and financial records from five search locations across Pathum Thani, Ayutthaya, and Bangkok.
Investigators allege the former abbot began diverting temple funds around two years ago by redirecting income that should have entered the temple's accounts. Some funds were transferred to individuals, and a foundation was later established using temple credentials without proper authorization. Police believe one or two additional people may be involved but say the suspect cooperated during the search and arrest. Investigators say they focused on corruption and financial irregularities, not ecclesiastical law. A decision on bail conditions will depend on flight risk and the likelihood of witness tampering.
