Family Accuses Helper of Stealing 2 Million Baht Insurance Payout
The family of a security guard killed in a truck accident says a man who offered to help with the case stole 2 million baht of their insurance payout and threatened to drop the case when they asked for it back. The alleged fraudster gave the victims only small amounts before fleeing with the cash. They have turned to the media for help and intend to file a police report.
The family of the security guard said that after the accident, a man identifying himself as Oom approached them, offering to help pursue the case and claim compensation. The insurance company approved a 2.5 million baht payout, issued as a check to Somenuek, the deceased’s only sister. When they went to a bank in Rayong city to cash the check, Oom accompanied Somenuek and the victim’s stepdaughter, Ann. After withdrawing the cash, Oom gave each woman 250,000 baht, kept the remaining 2 million baht, saying he would use it to pay police officers, then fled with the money. Ann later tried to retrieve the 2 million baht via Line, but Oom replied with a threatening message: "If you cause trouble, I will dismiss the case and demand back the 500,000 baht I already gave you." Ann cried, saying the family is poor and had trusted Oom’s apparent goodwill, only to be cheated out of the deceased’s final compensation. The family has now gone to the media to seek justice and plans to file a police report with evidence.
