Registration for the Khon Kaen Provincial Administrative Organization chairmanship election opened on August 17, 2025, drawing two candidates in a heated contest. Wattana Changluea, nominee number 1, and Pongsak Tungwanichkul, former chairman and nominee number 2, filed their candidacies amid enthusiastic support from their respective camps. The election is set for September 27, 2025.
Wattana, running as an independent, emphasized that an appeals court ruling clearing him of vote-buying allegations had restored his honor and vindicated him in the eyes of the law. He said he was running to protect the integrity of Khon Kaen residents, who had voted for him by more than 330,000 votes in the previous election. "My policies this time will build on my previous nine-point agenda with a new nine-point 'continue development' plan to sustain projects I started and launch new ones," he said. "I ask Khon Kaen voters to give me another chance with my proven track record of delivering results immediately, not waiting for next year's budget changes while residents suffer."
Pongsak, returning after his six terms as chairman, pledged to bring his experience and expertise back to Khon Kaen's development. He vowed to address genuine local problems and focus on improving residents' quality of life through infrastructure, education, and healthcare initiatives, confident the province could grow stronger than ever.
