Gulf Energy Development (GULF) reaffirms its commitment to driving sustainable society by continuing its "GULF Sparks, Life Starts" project for a fourth year. The initiative aims to improve quality of life and reduce inequality in remote communities nationwide by installing free solar power systems. This year, GULF identified the urgent need of Ban Huai Ta village in Uttaradit province, an island community above the Sirikit Dam that has long lacked electricity. The company installed a solar panel system with battery storage at Ban Huai Ta Witthaya School, which not only expands educational opportunities with modern technology but also enhances food safety for school lunches, provides clean drinking water, and supports local weaving and handicraft livelihoods.
The village head of Moo 4, Ban Huai Ta, Tambon Nang Phaya, Amphoe Tha Pla, Uttaradit, said: "Ban Huai Ta is a small community of about 300 people, or roughly 150 households. The village sits like an island above the Sirikit Dam. Travel relies mainly on boats, taking about two hours from the Tha Pla district pier. Most residents work in agriculture and fruit orchards such as lychee, longkong, and Lin-Lae durian, which are important economic crops granted by royal initiative."
"In the past, this community faced considerable hardship until Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother visited with the royal family, providing assistance in various areas, especially promoting occupations and improving quality of life. This brought many government agencies to support agriculture, livestock, fisheries, weaving, and handicrafts, using the school's multipurpose building as a center for learning and preserving local wisdom to this day."
"Despite ongoing development, a critical problem affecting quality of life is the lack of electricity, especially at Ban Huai Ta Witthaya School, which serves as both an educational and community activity center. The community also faced sanitation issues from a lack of standard clean drinking water because the water filtration system could not operate at full capacity due to power constraints, forcing many villagers to buy bottled water daily."
"GULF's installation of a solar power system for the school and community this time addresses the problem directly. Children have more educational opportunities, the water filtration system can produce clean drinking water for students and villagers, and community activities can run more efficiently. It is a genuine uplift in the quality of life for local people."
