Hat Yai Mayor Says Flood Budget Nearly Wiped Out
1h ago Khaosod

At 1:10 p.m. on July 10, 2569, at the water gate in Bang Klam subdistrict, Songkhla province, Hat Yai Municipality Mayor Norprom Na Pattalung gave an interview regarding criticism over the 2570 budget cuts for flood relief in Hat Yai. The mayor stated that the budget was cut entirely. He noted that the smart classroom project belonged to the previous administration under former Mayor Sakorn Thongmuni, not his tenure. The municipality was able to secure only 4 rubber boats, 3 dump trucks, and 1 road project, with approval still pending in next year's budget committee session.

Regarding the jet ski purchase, the mayor said they requested it but the budget was completely cut, leaving only 4 rubber boats. When asked if the jet ski cost 8 million baht as reported, he replied he was unsure, saying the e-bidding price was whatever it was, but it was cut anyway. When asked if he planned to discuss this matter with the prime minister during today's meeting, he said no, he was simply attending as usual.

Addressing claims that the municipality still had 200 million baht in remaining budget, the mayor clarified it has only 42 million baht left. He explained that the previous 200 million had been spent on school repairs, roads, sanitation facilities damaged by flooding, and computer equipment, as well as on canal dredging and water pumps costing over 200 million baht two months ago.

Regarding this year's flood situation, the mayor said they are doing their full duty. He noted that the 2570 budget still needs to pass through committee reviews and 3-4 more meetings. So far, dredging work has covered over 200 kilometers of canals and waterways.

Somdet Phra Maharachmonkulmuni, head of the Supreme Sangha Council and director of the Buddhist-based national reconciliation project, presided over an award ceremony on July 10, 2025 at the Buddhamamdal Assembly Hall in Nakhon Pathom province. The event honored exemplary Five Precepts Villages under the initiative designed to foster social harmony through Buddhist principles.

Addressing clergy, officials, and Buddhists nationwide, Somdet Phra Maharachmonkulmuni explained that the Five Precepts Villages project originated from the vision of the late Somdet Phra Maharachmanglacharn in 2557 B.E. with three core objectives: promoting public welfare, ensuring national security, and honoring the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and the Royal Family.

The project has operated continuously for over 12 years with support from the clergy, government agencies, private sector, and communities throughout Thailand. It has produced tangible results in promoting moral values and social unity. Somdet Phra Maharachmonkulmuni praised all participating organizations and individuals for their dedicated efforts.

Twenty-two Thai companies secured $8.1 million in business deals with Vietnamese partners at a film festival business matching event in Ho Chi Minh City, covering licensing, distribution, and co-production agreements.

Thai Films Score $275M in Vietnam Business Deals
2h ago Khaosod

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) under the Commerce Ministry reported successful results from the Business Matching activity held on July 9, 2026, at the Vinpearl Landmark 81 hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. Twenty-two Thai companies and 21 Vietnamese companies participated, conducting 160 business negotiations that generated a total trade value of 275.46 million baht, equivalent to approximately 8.10 million US dollars. This demonstrates the potential of Thai films, series, and content to expand markets and create business partnerships in Vietnam.

The negotiated trade value breaks down as 17.51 million baht in immediate value, 121.45 million baht expected within one year, and 136.51 million baht expected within 2-5 years. Business discussions covered licensing sales, content distribution, theatrical releases of Thai films, digital platform distribution, and joint production projects between companies from both countries.

According to DITP Deputy Director-General Porawit Silaouen, Vietnam represents a high-potential market for the Thai film and content industry, driven by growth in the entertainment media sector and strong consumer demand for foreign content, particularly Thai films and series. Vietnam serves not only as an important export market but also as a potential partner for long-term collaboration in distribution, co-production, intellectual property development, and regional market expansion across ASEAN.

"The success of these business negotiations reflects that Thai content has significant potential and continues to attract Vietnam's market," Porawit said. "The department will continue supporting Thai entrepreneurs in expanding markets, building business partnerships, and developing new forms of collaboration to increase trade value and strengthen the competitiveness of Thailand's content industry in foreign markets."

The Thai Film Festival in Vietnam 2026, held July 9-11, marked the third consecutive edition, integrating trade promotion activities with audience expansion for Thai content through Business Matching, Networking Receptions, and film screenings. Five Thai films were screened: Midnight Incense, Death Whisperer 1, Ghost Board, Our House, and Human Resource, accompanied by meet-and-greets with directors, actors, and film representatives to build awareness and promote Thai content in Vietnam. The event held special significance as Thailand and Vietnam mark 50 years of diplomatic relations.

DITP will continue promoting Thailand's content industry by organizing the Thailand Content Market 2026 (TCM 2026) on July 20-22, 2026, at the Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok, serving as an international business platform connecting Thai film and content entrepreneurs.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday officially opened the new road linking Thailand's Sadao Customs House with Malaysia's Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint, marking a major step in strengthening cross-border trade and connectivity.

The inauguration took place at the new Sadao border checkpoint in Songkhla province. During the ceremony, the two leaders walked from their respective border gates and met for a symbolic handshake at the midpoint of the crossing before Anwar welcomed Anutin to the Malaysian side.

The new road will open to the public and freight transport from July 11 after years of joint development by the two countries to connect their border checkpoints.

Speaking at the ceremony, Anutin described the new Sadao checkpoint as "an economic gateway" that would bring the people, trade and investment of Thailand and Malaysia closer together. He said the Sadao-Bukit Kayu Hitam crossing is the two countries' most important land trade gateway and one of the region's key transport corridors. The new connection is expected to ease congestion, shorten border crossing times, lower logistics costs and improve the movement of goods, tourists and travelers.

Anutin said he and Anwar had agreed during their official talks on Thursday to accelerate border connectivity projects linking Songkhla-Kedah, Satun-Perlis and Narathiwat-Kelantan, while also promoting border economic zones and streamlining customs and immigration procedures.

He said the infrastructure investment would help attract new investment, create jobs and boost local businesses, while improving the quality of life in border communities.

Thailand and Malaysia have set a bilateral trade target of $30 billion. More than 80% of the two countries' border trade currently passes through the Sadao crossing, underscoring its importance as the main trade and logistics gateway between the neighbors.

KHON KAEN — A Cambodian construction worker has been arrested for allegedly stealing electrical cables from a shopping mall construction site in northeastern Thailand, with police saying he admitted selling the metal inside the wires to support his family back home.

Police in Khon Kaen announced the arrest of the 34-year-old Cambodian national on Friday following an investigation into the theft of electrical cables from the newly completed Central Campus Khon Kaen development. The stolen cables were valued at about 10,000 baht.

Investigators said they searched the suspect's accommodation at a workers' camp and found aluminum stripped from electrical cables, clothing and shoes matching those worn by the suspect during the theft, as well as pieces of the stolen cables.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly confessed to cutting the cables to extract aluminum and copper, which he then sold to scrap dealers. He told police he sent the money to his family in Cambodia.

Police are coordinating with the contractor to determine how long the suspect had been employed at the site and with the provincial labor office to verify whether he was legally working in Thailand.

The suspect has been charged with theft, while investigators are tracing the scrap shop where the stolen metals were allegedly sold and are considering additional charges if any labor law violations are found.

Songkhla Lake Bridge Must Include Dolphin Conservation Plan

Thailand's cabinet approved the Songkhla Lake bridge project with a mandatory 402.818 million baht dolphin conservation program to protect the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins, of which only 14 remain in the lake.

Songkhla Lake Bridge Must Include Dolphin Conservation Plan
2h ago Khaosod

The director of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Pin Sak Surasawadee, discussed the Songkhla Lake bridge project and the Ko Lanta connector bridge linking Krabi's Krasaem Sindhu district to Trang's Khao Chai Son district. The cabinet approved this project on February 18, 2025, with a conservation plan budgeted at 402.818 million baht over five years.

Since the bridge falls within an area requiring special environmental protection, a parallel Irrawaddy dolphin conservation program is essential. Only five countries worldwide still have this dolphin species, with Thailand having merely 14 individuals left. They are listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, with their small population in crisis. As the last dolphin group in Songkhla Lake, they require protection and habitat restoration alongside efforts to reduce all threats.

From 2006 to 2025, 69 dolphins died, primarily from fishing gear, especially nets. Since implementing a ghost net retrieval program and working with stakeholders to eliminate harmful fishing equipment, mortality rates have declined significantly. No dolphin deaths have been reported this year, though vigilance remains necessary. Calf mortality is concerning, with a mortality rate exceeding 40 percent, indicating low population growth potential due to small population size, reduced genetic diversity, natural behavior, and environmental factors in Songkhla Lake.

Pin Sak emphasized that the project must balance infrastructure development with natural resource conservation. The government mandates that conservation planning accompany project development to prevent, mitigate, and monitor impacts on dolphins and the lake ecosystem. The conservation plan will address habitat restoration, ecosystem recovery, food sources, community participation, and knowledge development to ensure sustainable results.

School Principal Accused Of Sexual Abuse By 11 Students

Eleven students aged 10-15 filed charges against a school principal in Kanchanaburi for sexual abuse, with police indicating over 20 students may be affected; victims will receive shelter care during investigation.

School Principal Accused Of Sexual Abuse By 11 Students
2h ago Khaosod

On July 10, 2569 (2026), Paveena Hongsukul, chairwoman of the Paveena Foundation for Children and Women, brought 11 families with girls aged 10-15 from a school in Sri Sawat district, Kanchanaburi province, to the Kanchanaburi Provincial Police Command to file charges against the school principal for sexual misconduct involving groping. Maj. Gen. Pacharavee Ruangpoo, commander of Kanchanaburi Provincial Police, facilitated the filing of complaints at the provincial command rather than at Sri Sawat Police Station where the incidents occurred.

The situation came to light when one parent learned of the principal's behavior and gathered information from other parents, discovering that more than 20 students had experienced similar abuse. They approached the foundation for assistance.

Paveena stated that 11 girls and their families filed complaints today, though additional students and parents are preparing to file reports. The victims will be placed under care at the Kanchanaburi Child and Family Shelter to prevent intimidation during the investigation process, beginning July 13 onwards. Parents will provide statements to investigators immediately.

Maj. Gen. Pacharavee said police are coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure the victims' welfare and will conduct comprehensive interviews with all victims and parents to ensure justice.

Parents disclosed that their children were called to the principal's residence under the pretext of exchanging old uniforms for new ones, where abuse occurred. The principal allegedly threatened victims, claiming that reporting the incidents would result in expulsion and loss of educational funding. Some children were allegedly abused repeatedly over several years, with incidents numbering in the hundreds.

Initially, the 11 girls who filed complaints will be placed under care at the Kanchanaburi Child and Family Shelter awaiting interviews with multidisciplinary professionals beginning July 13. Other students and parents can continue filing complaints and providing information to police. The principal submitted a resignation letter several months ago, confirmed by the Kanchanaburi Education Zone 1 Office.

Thailand Rebuffs Cambodia Over Ancient Site Damage Claims

Thailand's military rejected Cambodian claims that its operations damaged ancient monuments, arguing Cambodia used areas near archaeological sites as military bases and that accusations lacked complete evidence.

Thailand Rebuffs Cambodia Over Ancient Site Damage Claims
2h ago Khaosod

Thailand's Joint Information Center (JIC) rejected Cambodian accusations that Thai military operations damaged ancient monuments, reaffirming Thailand's commitment to international law and criticizing one-sided evidence presented by Cambodia. On July 10, 2025, JIC Director General Praphas Sonsangchai stated that Cambodia's allegations relied solely on one-sided information and that any assessment should be based on complete facts, not selective data.

Sonsangchai noted that evidence shows Cambodia has used areas near archaeological sites as military bases and operational centers, launching attacks on Thai forces from these locations. He emphasized that discussing monument damage without acknowledging the full military context cannot constitute fair and complete fact-presentation.

Thailand affirmed its right and duty to protect sovereignty, territorial integrity, and citizens' lives from military threats. Thai operations target military objectives under principles of military necessity, distinction, proportionality, and precaution to minimize civilian and cultural property damage.

JIC called on Cambodia to cease presenting one-sided accusations and transparently clarify its military deployment and use of areas adjacent to archaeological sites. "Ancient monuments and cultural heritage should not be weaponized for military advantage or manipulated as political and propaganda tools to accuse other nations," Sonsangchai stated.

Higher Education Budget Slashed 7.5%, Lawmaker Urges Real Results

Thailand's Higher Education Ministry faces a 7.5% budget cut to 149.8 billion baht, prompting a Pheu Thai lawmaker to demand real results instead of ineffective international agreements and inflated achievements.

Higher Education Budget Slashed 7.5%, Lawmaker Urges Real Results
2h ago Khaosod

During a special parliamentary committee meeting on July 10, 2025, examining the fiscal year 2570 budget bill, Surachest Praweenwongwit, a Pheu Thai list MP, expressed concern over the Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Ministry's budget being cut by 7.5% compared to last year, dropping from 161.927 billion baht to 149.826 billion baht.

Surachest criticized the ministry's Deputy Secretary General for frequently traveling first class to sign ineffective memoranda of understanding that yield no real results, calling them mere "meet and greet" exercises that need improvement.

He emphasized the country's economic challenges and the need to better allocate limited resources. Surachest highlighted the importance of research and development funding, noting that while the country invests 144 billion baht in road construction, the Science, Research and Innovation Promotion Fund (TSRIF) receives only 13.44 billion baht—equivalent to nationwide school and hospital budgets combined.

The ministry's budget faced a severe 32% cut, Surachest said, making it difficult to envision Thailand's future direction when resources flow primarily toward road construction that requires constant repairs.

He cited an example from the previous parliament where the transportation committee proposed research into traffic and transportation innovations, such as traffic light algorithms, which could generate real development and income. However, the ministry showed little initiative. Though the current minister agreed in principle, no concrete action has followed.

Surachest criticized the ministry for frequently promoting Traffee Fondue, a software complaint system, as a success story. While he acknowledged its merits, he called it a small-scale project and expressed frustration with "using trendy words to advertise exaggerated achievements," urging the ministry to deliver tangible, large-scale results that truly benefit the nation.

Minister Warns Kanchanaburi Against Foreign Land Grabs
2h ago Khaosod

On July 10, 2025, Akkanat Kangkittinan, Education Minister and Pheu Thai Party MP for Kanchanaburi District 1, posted on Facebook urging residents to safeguard their province. Kanchanaburi, he noted, is one of Thailand's premier tourist destinations, renowned for its natural beauty, rich history, archaeology, and unique geographic significance—a heritage passed down from ancestors that must be preserved for future generations.

In recent weeks, reports have emerged of foreign investors purchasing large tracts of land across multiple areas of the province. Such transactions could lead to development projects or businesses with serious impacts on local livelihoods, environment, natural resources, and quality of life. Without careful and strict oversight, these decisions risk burdening the entire province for decades.

Akkanat urged all stakeholders—provincial officials, local administrative organizations, village headmen, and residents—to remain vigilant, monitor developments closely, and collectively protect Kanchanaburi's interests. He emphasized that leaders must stand with the people, as their positions are temporary while the land, forests, and rivers belong to future generations.

He warned against allowing short-term decisions to create long-term burdens, noting that once resources are destroyed or communities fundamentally altered, they cannot be recovered. Kanchanaburi's value lies not merely in tourism but in being a home to people, a land of history, culture, and nature that has sustained communities for generations.

While development is widely supported, it must be transparent, accountable, and responsive to public voices. It cannot trade irreplaceable resources for short-term profits benefiting only a few. Akkanat called on all Kanchanaburi residents—young and old, urban and rural—to care more deeply for their homeland, protecting its land, forests, rivers, history, and communities.

He encouraged residents to remain vigilant and not ignore potential threats to the common good. Using their rights within legal frameworks, they should verify information, voice opinions, and participate in decisions about their province's future. He reminded residents of a principle: "We borrow this land from our descendants, not inherit it from ancestors only to exhaust it."

Kanchanaburi's beauty tomorrow depends on decisions made today.
