EGAT is partnering with the IAEA to accelerate personnel development and pursue small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power plants, targeting the first unit to come online in 2037. The 2026 Power Development Plan (PDP 2026) sets a combined SMR capacity goal of 9,000 megawatts. Deputy Energy Minister Somphop Phattanariyangkul revealed this after chairing an academic seminar under the IAEA-Thailand technical cooperation project with EGAT, titled "Strengthening Thailand's SMR Pathway: Strategy and Project Implementation." He stated that SMR technology is a key option for Thailand to enhance long-term energy security, support economic growth, and transition to a low-carbon society. Amid global energy shifts, countries are seeking stable, sustainable, and affordable power sources. The Energy Ministry is therefore prioritizing systematic knowledge and capability development for relevant agencies so Thailand can comprehensively evaluate energy options and make careful decisions based on data, adhering to the highest standards of safety, security, environmental responsibility, and public confidence. EGAT Deputy Governor for Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy Sirawat Jedsee said energy security alongside clean energy transition is a major challenge, with SMR gaining international attention as a promising low-carbon source that can provide stable power. EGAT is thus developing expertise to understand both the opportunities and challenges of this technology. The seminar allowed IAEA and international experts to share experience and best practices to raise Thailand's readiness for future decisions. The meeting covered key issues from feasibility studies and project planning to workforce development, safety culture, and public participation, so Thai agencies can prepare systematically. If a decision is made to proceed with SMR development, Thailand will be able to execute safely, efficiently, and in line with international standards.
