Khon Kaen woman breaks down after losing lifetime savings in hospital theftLegacyA Thai woman appealed for help after over 300,000 baht in cash and gold was stolen while she was in a hospital in Khon Kaen in March, saying the investigation has made little progress. The victim, 63 year old Sompong Sriwiwat, became emotional while speaking to the media, explaining that she had spent a lifetime saving the money and valuables but lost them in a theft occurred at Khao Suan Kwang Hospital at about 4am on March 3. Sompong stated that she had not received any meaningful update on the case since reporting the theft, so she decided to seek help from the media outlets. Sompong said she had been admitted to hospital after experiencing chest tightness linked to asthma and hypertension. Doctors advised her to remain in hospital for three to four days so her condition could be monitored. Photo via Facebook/ Sineenat Chatpangta According to Sompong, her husband stayed with her during the admission but slept in an area designated for relatives, away from her bed. She told reporters that medication caused her to sleep deeply during the night of March 2. When she woke the following morning, she discovered that her bag, which had been placed on a cabinet beside her bed, had disappeared. The bag reportedly contained cash, a gold necklace with a Buddhist amulet, a gold bracelet and a mobile phone. A total value of the loss was over 300,000 baht. Khao Suan Kwang Police Station officers were called to the hospital and reviewed CCTV footage from the ward. The footage showed a man entering the ward, taking the bag and leaving the building. The suspect was wearing a black T-shirt, long jeans, trainers, a hat and a face mask, making identification difficult. Photo via Facebook/ Sineenat Chatpangta After the case received media attention, Khao Suan Kwang Police Station issued a statement explaining the progress of the investigation. Station superintendent Peeranat Ngamlertrattanachai said officers had not neglected the case. He said investigators questioned hospital staff and patients who were in the ward at the time, but no witnesses saw the incident. According to Peeranat, CCTV footage showed the suspect, believed to be between 40 and 50 years old and about 170 centimetres tall, walking through the ward and looking around several beds before taking Sompong’s bag. Photo via Channel 7 Police later recovered the abandoned bag outside the hospital after the suspect fled towards Friendship Highway. Only Sompong’s mobile phone remained inside. The superintendent added that investigators had coordinated with police in neighbouring districts after similar thefts were reported at other hospitals in the province. Peeranat acknowledged that identifying the suspect has been the main challenge in the investigation. He assured Sompong that officers are continuing to work on the case and urged her to remain confident that police will identify and arrest the person responsible.

Opposition Leaders Address Students on Southern Border Peace Process

Opposition lawmakers told Prince of Songkla University students that the southern border conflict requires political dialogue and transparency over military force, citing 600 billion baht spent since 2004 with unclear results.

Opposition Leaders Address Students on Southern Border Peace Process
6h ago Khaosod

On July 17, opposition leader Natthapon Rueangpanyawutthi and fellow Phak Pracharatchon (People's Party) lawmakers held a political science lecture for first-year students at Prince of Songkla University's Pattani campus on the topic of transparent governance and progress toward peace in the southern border region. The session opened for student questions. When asked about peace negotiations, deputy party leader Romsaman Punjorn stated that the current government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul shows greater commitment to peace than its predecessor, noting that technical working groups have restarted discussions with some progress visible. On security concerns in the three southern provinces, party leader Natthapon revealed that since the violence began in 2004, the country has allocated over 600 billion baht to the region. However, he noted the government cannot verify whether these funds effectively address the problems. More than half of the budget went to the National Internal Security Command (NISC), making transparency the first priority for solving the crisis. Deputy leader Romsaman added that before proposing solutions, officials must first define what the actual southern border problem is, warning that misdiagnosed remedies risk creating new conflicts. He suggested that if previous military-led approaches had worked, the crisis would have ended long ago. Romsaman identified deeper issues—unresolved grievances, distrust of state institutions, and feelings of discrimination—that fuel the conflict. These problems, along with inequality, require resolution to restore public confidence in justice and the state. He emphasized that military force alone cannot solve the problem, and that political dialogue must lead military strategy to address root causes.

On July 17, at the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge border checkpoint in Nong Khai's Muang District, immigration police coordinated with security officials and relevant agencies to receive 20 Thai nationals—12 men and 8 women—handed over by Laotian authorities. Initial screening found no victims of human trafficking or individuals with arrest warrants among the group.

Investigations revealed that all 20 had previously worked as administrators for gambling websites in Cambodia. They returned to Thailand following border skirmishes between Thai and Cambodian forces, then traveled to Vientiane where they rented a hotel and operated three illegal online lottery websites, working in three shifts for monthly wages of 15,000 to 30,000 baht.

On July 15, Laotian authorities conducted a major crackdown targeting illegal gambling networks and human trafficking, including scam operations. After completing legal procedures, Laos coordinated with Thailand to return all 20 individuals for further prosecution under Thai law.

Thailand Repatriates 22 Citizens From Laos Over Call Center Scam

Thailand Repatriates 22 Citizens From Laos Over Call Center Scam
6h ago Khaosod

On July 17, 2025, at the Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge checkpoint in Chiang Khong district, Chiang Rai province, Thai immigration and law enforcement officials received 22 Thai nationals (9 men and 13 women) extradited from Laos. The repatriation followed notification from the Thai Embassy in Vientiane on July 15 that Laotian authorities had arrested these individuals on charges of telephone fraud in the Boten Special Economic Zone, Luang Namtha province.

Screening revealed that all 22 individuals fell victim to online job recruitment scams. They were enticed by social media advertisements claiming various positions with monthly salaries of 18,000 to 25,000 baht, plus free accommodation and meals. They traveled to Laos hoping to work but were arrested by Laotian authorities before beginning employment. Investigators found no evidence of human trafficking among the group. Additionally, two individuals without Thai nationality were identified as having illegally exited Thailand without passing through official immigration checkpoints and will face legal proceedings.

Immigration Commissioner Jiraphop Puridech instructed officials to strictly apply screening procedures to distinguish victims from perpetrators and to follow the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) protocol fully. The Chiang Saen immigration checkpoint has intensified screening of travelers heading to neighboring countries, interviewing those at risk of labor exploitation and warning about online job recruitment scams. However, many continue to be deceived by false promises of high income and benefits, unaware that victims often face forced labor, illegal work, confinement, physical abuse, or unpaid wages.

Authorities will conduct further investigation to determine whether any of the 22 individuals are connected to online gambling networks or scammer gangs, with full legal action to be taken against all involved parties if evidence emerges.

Thailand Tightens Freight Rail Safety Rules, Boosts Tourism Rail Services

Thailand Tightens Freight Rail Safety Rules, Boosts Tourism Rail Services
6h ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn presided over the second 2025 meeting of the Railway Transport Policy Committee to review legislation and major policy initiatives designed to address safety while maximizing benefits from the rail system to boost the nation's economy. Pipat disclosed that the meeting's primary objective is to elevate Thai rail safety to the highest international standards, particularly following freight train accidents with passenger buses—requiring urgent measures to protect public life and property while using rail as a driver of economic growth, especially in tourism.

The committee prepared to review safety legislation and rail transport operation standards in four dimensions: First, enhancing safety and organizing urban freight rail transport by designating Bangkok as a special surveillance zone—banning freight trains during daytime except 22.00–04.00 hours, capping speed at 30 km/h maximum, and prohibiting fuel transport throughout Bangkok within 24 hours except in urgent or public interest cases. Second, integrating rail with tourism to stimulate regional economies and distribute income through a subcommittee coordinating between the Transport and Tourism Ministries, improving rail infrastructure under Tourism for All principles to boost provincial economies and local communities sustainably.

Third, the committee endorsed a Bangkok and metropolitan rail transport development plan under the 2025 Rail Transport Act as a long-term framework for expanding electric rail networks with seamless mobility and integration with other public transport systems to ease travel, reduce congestion, and support sustainable urban growth. Fourth, the committee approved six draft secondary laws establishing legal foundations to control operator, vehicle, and personnel standards—covering operator license requirements (corporate entities with sufficient registered capital, 30-year license terms), rail vehicle types and engineering/safety specifications, and driver/operator qualifications (age, physical health, mental health, and professional skills). Additionally, the committee advanced transparency through electronic licenses (both operator and vehicle permits) for public verification, and mandated operators maintain insurance coverage throughout license terms with minimum protection levels determined by license category.

At 5:30 a.m. on July 17, 2569, Chiang Dao Mountain Unit forces under Special Operations Unit Chaiyanupap launched an intensive interdiction operation against drug smugglers on a natural mountain route about 5 kilometers from the Doi Jai checkpoint, in Ban Kaenoi subdistrict, Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai province. Three task forces from the 2nd Horse Cavalry Regiment had been conducting rigorous patrols and surveillance since July 10.

This morning, checkpoint officers detected approximately 30 smugglers moving along a ravine trail on foot. When officers positioned on high ground gave a warning signal and demanded a search, the group opened fire with unknown weapons. A gunfight erupted for about five minutes amid heavy rain and thick fog. Using their terrain knowledge and poor visibility to their advantage, the suspects escaped into the ravine.

After the clash ended, all Thai officers remained safe. A sweep of the gunfight area recovered methamphetamine pills in 30 sacks totaling approximately 6,490,000 tablets. Initial examination identified them as blue 999-branded methamphetamine: 19 sacks containing 220,000 pills each, and 11 sacks containing 210,000 pills each. Authorities are controlling the area and expanding the investigation to pursue and arrest the fleeing suspects for legal proceedings.

Bangkok BTS Taps into EMV Contactless Success with 60% Growth
7h ago Khaosod

Bangkok Mass Transit System (BEM) has reported a 60% increase in EMV Contactless card usage since launching full service on the Blue and Purple Lines, demonstrating strong passenger acceptance. Dr. Sombutr Kitchalapaksakul, BEM's Chief Executive Officer, stated that since June 1, all automated fare gates across stations now support EMV Contactless payments—including credit, debit, prepaid, and Mangmoom cards—streamlining travel and supporting government cost-of-living initiatives.

BEM's readiness is crucial for implementing the government's unified ticketing policy with fares of 17-45 baht per trip, launching January 1, 2027, requiring EMV Contactless payment exclusively. Beyond this, the company is preparing the Orange Line (East) for late-2027 launch, projected to handle 100,000 trips daily initially and 300,000 trips daily once the West Line opens in 2028. BEM is also acquiring 21 additional Blue Line trains to meet growing passenger demand from the expanding network.

The company is collaborating with the State Railway of Thailand and Krung Thai Bank to refine the EMV system, addressing limitations and ensuring smooth, efficient operations for all passengers.
