Labor Minister Launches Phuket Initiative to Support Freelance Workers
Thailand's Labor Minister opened a Phuket festival supporting freelance workers with skills training, social protection programs, and direct sales opportunities to strengthen community economies.
Labor Minister Julphand Amornvivat presided over the opening of a quality-of-life improvement festival for freelance workers designed to stimulate community economies for fiscal year 2026. The event brought together government officials including Pichet Thongpan, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Labor Ministry; Romdone Hayee Awae, Deputy Governor of Phuket Province; Somasap Padmasukhand, Director-General of the Public Employment Service; and numerous other senior officials and stakeholders.
Amornvivat emphasized that the visit to Phuket was not merely a ceremonial opening but a concrete demonstration of government and labor ministry policies. He stressed that freelance workers must have stable lives and serve as a crucial force in revitalizing Thailand's economy. Phuket, he noted, is not only a world-class tourism destination but also a center for creative economy and service industries powered by local workers.
The event, organized under the concept "Building Protective Networks to Strengthen Community Economies," aims to transform the vulnerability of freelance workers into strength through three key strategies: First, creating opportunities and enhancing future-ready skills by applying technology and innovation to develop new competencies aligned with the digital economy and supplementary income opportunities. Second, providing protection through social safety nets, emphasizing that freedom should not mean risk, by promoting self-insurance and ensuring freelance workers have strong security and backing. Third, serving as a mechanism to stimulate community economies by creating channels and venues for workers to sell goods, linking small entrepreneurs directly to consumers, and injecting capital into grassroots economies.
Pichet reported that the event, held September 17-18, 2026, aims to build understanding about the proposed freelance worker promotion and protection bill, encourage registration in the INDE-REGIS system, broaden professional perspectives toward modern entrepreneurship, and promote income-generating product sales. The event expected to attract over 1,000 participants.
The festival features six major activities: comprehensive labor ministry services, INDE-REGIS job fair with over 1,000 positions, labor law and social insurance clinic, state innovation exhibitions including Generative AI applications from Phuket Vocational College, health checks and flu vaccinations from Vachira Hospital, freelance profession demonstrations including spa and ancient handicrafts, decoupage art displays, over 30 product sales booths, and an inspirational talk forum featuring Phuket influencers.
