Mae Gulab, the legendary mochi and daifuku maker from Nakhon Sawan province, has passed away peacefully at the age of 86. The sad news was announced by Jairajpong Abhiwatchanant, owner of Mae Gulab Nakhon Sawan shop, which sells mochi, daifuku, and other famous local souvenirs. Charoen Rat Abhiwatchanant, known as Mae Gulab, the legend of mochi-daifuku, passed away on July 3, 2569 at 7:07 AM at Sawan Pracharak Hospital in Khao Khiao.
Funeral arrangements include a water-pouring ceremony on July 3 at Sala 1 of Wat Voranath Banpot Phra Aram Luang (Wat Khao Kob). Buddhist chanting services will be held from July 3-8 at 7:30 PM, with the final cremation ceremony on July 9 at 3:30 PM. The family requests attendees wear white or cream-colored clothing to create warm memories during the mourning period.
Mae Gulab's mochi became a legendary souvenir of Nakhon Sawan, originally founded by Charoen Rat Abhiwatchanant through a traditional sweets business. Her son, "Boy" Jairajpong Abhiwatchanant, adapted Japanese mochi recipes with new flour formulas to create chewy, soft textures and various delicious fillings that appeal to Thai tastes, transforming the product into an iconic provincial souvenir.
