Man Dies After Hospital Staff Ignore Critical Medical History
A Rayong hospital patient died of cerebral hemorrhage after staff ignored his wife's warnings about his critical medical history and previous stroke risk, potentially preventing proper care that could have saved his life.
A durian farm owner brought her husband, who had weakness in his limbs and had recently fallen in the bathroom, to a hospital in Rayong province on August 7. She tried to inform staff of critical medical history and medications, noting that his previous doctor in Bangkok had strictly forbidden surgery or tooth extraction and warned of stroke risk, with instructions to consult Bangkok doctors before any local treatment. The husband was still speaking normally at the time, but the staff member taking his history appeared indifferent to this information.
The doctor gave one injection, observed his condition, then discharged him with pain relief and fever-reducing medication for home care. About one kilometer from the hospital, the husband developed abnormal stiffness in his hands and feet. His wife rushed him back, but the original doctor and nurse had left their shift. The new medical team examined him and diagnosed a stroke, immediately transferring him to another hospital urgently.
The husband died after approximately 18 hours of treatment from a cerebral hemorrhage. His wife expressed deep regret that had the doctor and nurse listened to her explanation and medical history, her husband might have survived.
The incident sparked heavy criticism of the hospital on social media. Many people who had used its services complained about staff behavior, including phone use during work, making patients wait long times, and disputes between patients and staff. However, some residents acknowledged the hospital also had dedicated medical personnel who showed genuine care. Many called for hospital management to conduct training and improve staff communication skills and patient care awareness.
