The operation targeted 18-year-old Silchai (surname withheld), who faced arrest for Class 1 drug trafficking and methamphetamine possession without authorization.

During the operation, officers encountered an unidentified man who fired a shotgun at them and attempted to throw explosives. A blast occurred at the front of the house, killing the man at the scene. Activist Files Lese-Majeste Complaint Against MP Ice Rukchonok

An activist filed a lese-majeste complaint against People's Party MP Ice Rukchonok over a social media post using royal language, her second such case as she awaits trial on an earlier similar conviction.

Activist Files Lese-Majeste Complaint Against MP Ice Rukchonok
18h ago Khaosod

At 1:30 p.m. on August 18, 2025, activist Sandhya Sawasdi filed a complaint at the Central Investigation Police Command against Rukchonok Srinok, known as Ice, a People's Party MP, on charges under Section 112 of the Criminal Code and the Computer Crime Act. Sandhya said the complaint stems from a post by Ice that used a clip and remarks from a subdistrict administrator mentioning "higher-ups," followed by royal language (the word "spoke") that is grammatically reserved for the monarchy, royal family, or Buddha alone. This conduct, Sandhya argued, clearly links and expresses intent toward a specific person.

Sandhya noted the case resembles a 2564 conviction in which Ice posted others' statements on her private account, resulting in a six-year prison sentence under Section 112 and the Computer Crime Act, currently under appeal. He said this shows disregard for the justice process. Beyond filing with the investigating unit, Sandhya said he will petition the Attorney General within one to two weeks to ask the court to revoke Ice's temporary bail, as the post breaches court conditions prohibiting similar conduct. He cautioned the MP that creating additional cases does not build popularity but accumulates legal troubles, and urged caution in speech and social media posts.

When asked whether filing might be seen as boosting Ice's visibility, Sandhya said he is not concerned and accepts being viewed as "losing out." He emphasized his duty under the Constitution Article 50 to protect nation, religion, and monarchy, and denied seeking attention or hidden benefit. He noted he has filed at least 40–50 Section 112 cases previously and views this as fulfilling his legal obligation when encountering clear and flagrant conduct. The investigating officer has recorded his statement and will forward the matter to a superior for further action.

Boxing camp manager caught smuggling migrants in Prachin BuriLegacyPolice arrested a boxing camp manager and ten undocumented migrants in Prachin Buri today, August 18, after a pickup truck carrying the group allegedly fled a police stop and ended up stranded on a village road. The driver, identified as 42 year old Wichan, was arrested with nine Bangladeshi nationals and one Myanmar national in Wang Tha Chang subdistrict, Kabin Buri district. Police also seized the white Isuzu pickup truck used to transport the group. Police said they spotted the pickup while patrolling Highway 359 close to the Sa Kaeo provincial border. The route is reportedly used to transport undocumented migrants entering Thailand from Cambodia. Photo via Highway Police Officers became suspicious after seeing the pickup travelling at speed with numerous bags in the back and signalled for the driver to stop. Police said the driver instead accelerated away, prompting officers to call for assistance. The pickup entered a village road in Wang Tha Chang, an area surrounded largely by farmland, before losing control and coming to a stop on the roadside. The driver and nine migrants then allegedly left the vehicle and fled into a nearby plantation. Police sought help from local officials to search for the group. All of them were caught after more than three hours. Photo via Highway Police During questioning, Wichan said he managed a boxing camp in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo, and had been transporting migrants for around three months. He told police that a man he knew only as Na hired him to make the trips for 5,000 baht each. Wichan said he took the work to help cover expenses at his boxing camp. According to his account, he picked up the migrants near the border in Aranyaprathet and was taking them to a bus terminal in Bangkok. Photo via Highway Police The migrants told police they had been working in construction in Cambodia and wanted to reach the Bangladeshi embassy in Thailand so they could arrange their return home. Police transferred the group to Wang Takhian Police Station for legal proceedings and said the investigation would continue to identify others involved. Animal Lovers Clash With City Over Stray Feeding Ban Signs

Animal welfare groups in Nakhon Ratchasima are demanding the city remove signs banning stray dog feeding, citing unfair criminalization, while residents say the ban has reduced disease and safety risks following a rabies outbreak that kille

Animal Lovers Clash With City Over Stray Feeding Ban Signs
18h ago Khaosod

Animal welfare advocates are angry after the Nakhon Ratchasima municipality posted signs declaring that feeding stray dogs is illegal, and are calling for the signs to be removed and the message reworded. The municipality took the action after a rabies outbreak in the province from the start of the year to now, which infected 30 animals and exposed 17 people to the disease, including at least one death. Animal welfare organizations and volunteer groups say the signs unfairly criminalize feeding and argue the budget should instead go to vaccination and neutering programs. However, affected residents say the ban has worked: stray dogs leave food scraps, defecate in public areas that may harbor disease, cause traffic accidents, and attack people and each other.

At a public hearing on August 18, both sides agreed that the municipality's messaging was unclear and proposed revisions. Dr. Kung Vongchansuk, secretary of the Korat Animal Welfare Volunteer Association, said the phrasing "feeding equals breaking the law" was unfair and misrepresented the actual sanitation law. He suggested rewording to ask for cooperation in not feeding animals in specific areas, or allowing feeding only in designated containers that are cleaned immediately. Paricha, who runs the "Pary Rescue Dogs Korat" Facebook page, said her group already works with authorities on spaying, neutering, and vaccination drives, and wants the signs to distinguish clearly between health and legal issues. Community representatives countered that the signs have noticeably reduced problems and asked for clearer, more comprehensive communication from the municipality going forward.

Thai Justice Official Pushes Legal Reform to Revive Sadao Border Trade

Thai Justice Official Pushes Legal Reform to Revive Sadao Border Trade
18h ago Khaosod

A parliamentary legal committee on law, justice, and human rights visited Sadao, Songkhla, on August 18, 2025, led by Pol. Gen. Tweeaphon Sodsai, a committee member and former justice minister and Democrat Party leader, alongside committee chairman Rangsiman Rome, spokesperson Loufang Bandittothsakul, and secretary Romdhon Panjor. The group studied the ground and gathered input on "law enforcement, justice, and human rights protection to support peace-building in southern Thailand." The visit concentrated on structural economic fallout from the new Sadao customs checkpoint, which has severely damaged businesses in Samnukhkham subdistrict and caused a sharp drop in tourist arrivals. Over 100 participants attended, including Dr. Sitthipong Sitthiphattraprapha, chairman of the Haad Yai Hotel Association, and local government and business representatives.

Tweeaphon noted that two months after the new checkpoint opened, it directly disrupted commerce in the original checkpoint area. He identified three key underlying issues: policy and security problems, since Malaysia reportedly requested only one operating checkpoint and this needs bilateral verification; damage to the local economy and violated agreements, as all traffic and tourists now route directly to Haad Yai instead of the intended two- to three-night stay model in Sadao; and lack of community participation in management—local representatives and officials were excluded from system design despite knowing the real problems.

Tweeaphon recalled that the new checkpoint project began during his tenure as Southern Border Provinces Administration (SBPA) secretary, originally designed so the new facility would handle logistics and cargo while the old checkpoint focused on tourism and people. Legal and land-title delays stalled the project until 2015, when a military decree unlocked regulations and construction finished two months ago. He stressed: "Sadao is Thailand's highest-value border checkpoint, nearly 300 billion baht annually, and Malaysian tourists rank first for Thailand. The border is our front gate, but the current crisis is not legal—it's management failure that violates our agreements. Instead of a two-tier system, they funneled everything to one checkpoint, abandoning local businesses."

Tweeaphon also connected this to broader southern border issues, including the fishing crisis that has turned Thailand from producer to buyer, and the government's goal to end southern unrest by 2027. He emphasized that ending southern instability requires rule of law and local participation.

Thailand Attracts 1.4 Trillion Baht in Foreign Investment in First Half

Thailand attracted 1.4 trillion baht in foreign investment applications during the first half of the year, with Australian companies among major investors citing the country's political stability and efficient investment promotion programs

Thailand Attracts 1.4 Trillion Baht in Foreign Investment in First Half
18h ago Khaosod

Prime Minister Anuthul Chanyaweerakul revealed that foreign investors filed requests for investment promotion worth 60,000 million Australian dollars, approximately 1.4 trillion baht, in the first half of the year, following informal discussions with Australian business leaders at the Thailand-Australia Investment and Business Partnership Reception organized by the Board of Investment in Sydney. Major Australian investors continue to expand their production base in Thailand, reflecting confidence in the country's political stability, security, and logistics readiness. The Prime Minister stated that foreign investors view Thailand as a top investment choice, and the government is working to build confidence and promote national harmony to boost Thailand's appeal to investors.

A key factor receiving positive feedback from investors is the Board of Investment's Thailand Fast Pass, which serves as a comprehensive problem-solving center for investors, streamlining and expediting the investment process without any negative issues reported by investors who have engaged with it. During his planned meeting with the Australian Prime Minister in Canberra on August 19, the Thai Prime Minister said he would discuss jet fuel exports, as Australia has significant demand while Thailand has surplus jet fuel from diesel production, and Thailand stands ready to relax regulations to enable exports if Australia signals intent.

Regarding the promotion of Thai workers in Australia, the Prime Minister said he will raise the issue, noting that Thai restaurants in Thai Town are growing but facing chef shortages, necessitating negotiations to address visa and employment limitations. He emphasized that skilled Thai workers entering Australia represent genuine expertise and capability, not illegal or undocumented labor as in the past, and that opening opportunities for skilled Thai workers will benefit Australia's economy and create win-win benefits for both nations.

Thai Commercial Banks Stable Despite SME Weakness in Q2

Thailand's commercial banking system remained stable in Q2 2026 with solid capital and liquidity, though credit to small businesses and consumers contracted as large firms drove overall 2% lending growth despite elevated economic risks.

Thai Commercial Banks Stable Despite SME Weakness in Q2
18h ago Khaosod

The Bank of Thailand reported that the commercial banking system remained stable and solid in the second quarter of 2026, with capital, reserves, and liquidity at high levels. Commercial bank credit across all networks expanded 2% from the same period a year earlier, primarily supported by lending to large businesses requiring increased working capital due to higher energy costs and raw material prices. However, credit to SMEs and consumer lending continued to contract, reflecting elevated credit risk. Non-performing loans (NPL, or Stage 3) fell to 534.8 billion baht in the second quarter as banks accelerated debt management efforts, keeping the NPL ratio to total credit steady at 2.82% similar to the previous quarter. Stage 2 credit declined to 6.78%, partly as vulnerable borrowers moved into NPL status while some borrowers improved their standing. Banks continued to pursue preventive debt restructuring, helping slow the emergence of new NPLs. Net profits at commercial banks grew from the year-earlier period, supported by gains from fair value measurements of financial instruments and higher securities brokerage income, coupled with reduced provisions after banks had built reserves aggressively in prior quarters and implemented more efficient cost management. These factors offset declines in net interest income from rate adjustments aligned with policy rates and borrower relief measures. Going forward, ongoing Middle East tensions and an uneven Thai economic recovery pose risks to debt repayment capacity, particularly for vulnerable SMEs and households facing volatile earnings and high living costs. The Bank of Thailand will closely monitor commercial bank loan quality, while debt relief measures and continued liquidity support from financial institutions are expected to help sustain businesses and households ahead.
