Man Shot Dead at Funeral in Bangkok Temple Shooting
A gunman opened fire at a funeral in Bangkok's Bung Thong Lang Temple, killing a 27-year-old man and wounding two others in a revenge attack stemming from a shooting death weeks earlier.
Witnesses recount the shocking moment when the gunman rushed in and shot the young man at his girlfriend's funeral at Bung Thong Lang Temple in Khlong Chan subdistrict, Bang Kapi district, Bangkok, with two others also injured. The incident stems from a previous shooting on July 29, in which the deceased, 27-year-old Phokhai (surname withheld), accidentally fired a gun at his girlfriend, killing her. He had recently been released on bail and came to pay respects at her funeral service. The gunman, Naphrut (Sun), 23, was a friend of the deceased girlfriend and had a dispute with Phokhai over the incident that led to his girlfriend's death, prompting him to bring his own girlfriend and initiate the attack.
According to witness testimony, when Phokhai arrived at the temple, Naphrut confronted him, initially starting a fistfight. The victim remained seated and did not resist. Naphrut then drew a pistol and fired roughly seven to eight rounds at Phokhai, also wounding two of his companions. As people fled in panic, one witness tried to stop the gunman, but Naphrut turned the gun toward the witness before firing one final shot to Phokhai's head as he lay on the ground. The shooter then escaped on a motorcycle.
The witness expressed deep distress over the incident, noting the severity of gunfire erupting at a funeral service and criticizing the shooter's reckless behavior. After the shooting, when a friend called Naphrut urging him to turn himself in, he allegedly responded arrogantly, saying he was skilled enough that police would not be able to catch him. Police officials, including Deputy Commissioner Kamnapat Arunkireerojn and Assistant Commissioners Pongjak Jaksuruk and Wichai Nonrong, arrived at the scene to investigate. Authorities are pursuing the suspect for prosecution under the law.
