Investigators from Ladprao Police Station responded to reports of a shooting at Bung Thong Luang Temple in Khlong Chan subdistrict, Bang Kapi district, Bangkok at 5:10 p.m. on August 1st. At the scene, where a funeral service was underway in pavilion 16, they found one deceased male victim identified as Phokaiy (surname withheld), age 27, shot in the torso and head. Two others were also injured: Yothin, 26, shot in both legs, and Usmah, 26, shot in both legs and the right arm.

Investigation revealed the funeral was for Ms. A (pseudonym), the girlfriend of the deceased shooter. The victim had fatally shot Ms. A on July 29th at Chokechai Police Station area, had been released on bail, and attended the funeral. The suspect, Noprat (nickname San), age 23, arrived at the temple with Ms. B (pseudonym), Ms. A's close friend. Ms. B had harbored intense anger toward the victim for causing her friend's death on July 29th.

When San and Ms. B arrived at the funeral, San drew a gun and fired repeatedly at the victim, killing him instantly and wounding two bystanders. Both suspects fled the temple. Police are actively pursuing the suspects for legal prosecution.

A 28-year-old Thai woman, identified as Ms. A, was arrested at Fukuoka Airport in Japan after customs officers discovered methamphetamine hidden inside a coffee packet in her luggage. She and her boyfriend had been hired to deliver the package to Japan. Japanese prosecutors later declined to prosecute her, finding insufficient evidence of her involvement in the crime.

Following the arrest, Thai police and the Office of the Public Prosecutor coordinated with Japanese authorities to investigate the smuggling network. Police obtained arrest warrants for two Vietnamese nationals: Mr. Bank and Ms. Ho, who served as the money handler and recruiter respectively. Ms. Ho was arrested on July 28, while Mr. Bank remains at large.

Investigators determined that Mr. Bank entered Thailand from Mukdahan Province on July 8 and purchased items from a Bangkok shopping mall on July 10, which he packaged with coffee and had delivered to Ms. A's home. A Vietnamese national named Mr. Tang oversees finances and ordered Mr. Bank to transfer all funds. Ms. Ho, Mr. Tang's sister-in-law, also participated in the scheme. Bank records show Ms. Ho's Thai account processed 12 million baht in one year, though she denies involvement.

Police warned the public that such smuggling operations use fake names, work on tight timelines to prevent inspection, and exploit items that appear ordinary or are easily available in the destination country. Authorities strongly discourage participating in smuggling, as multiple laws including customs and drug trafficking statutes can apply.

Ms. A expressed gratitude to Thai police and revealed she had been recruited through Line messaging for two previous deliveries. She claimed she inspected the items and believed them to be ordinary food and snacks, though some messages seemed oddly translated and not from a Thai speaker. She urged others considering such work to pack and send items themselves rather than accepting pre-packaged goods, warning of the 20-day ordeal she endured in a Japanese detention facility.

Prime Minister AnuthIn Charnvirakul made the appeal on August 1 after reviewing a summary of the five-victim murder case in Banglamung district, Chachoengsao province. He confirmed that evidence is clear and sufficient to prosecute the main defendants and their accomplices, ordering police to conduct a thorough investigation while closing all legal loopholes and expanding the inquiry into drug trafficking networks and related crimes.

Two main suspects have been arrested, with several accomplices also apprehended. Authorities have preliminarily linked the murders of the two Russian siblings to the killing of a Thai family of three, totaling five victims. Police are expanding the investigation as they believe the suspects may be connected to additional crimes involving drugs and other illegal activities.

The PM requested media cooperation in reporting the case, specifically asking outlets not to describe the victims as tourists. The Russian siblings had lived in Thailand for over seven years, regularly traveled in and out of the country, and maintained a life with their family here—not as newly arrived tourists, he noted.

"Thailand remains safe for both Thai citizens and foreigners. This incident represents the actions of a brutal criminal group and does not reflect the overall security situation of the country," AnuthIn said. He apologized to the Russian victims' families and to the Russian people, reaffirming that prosecution will be pursued to the maximum extent with no bail allowed.

National Police Commander Pol. Gen. Kittrat Panpetch revealed that the main suspect has a drug-related criminal history and previous prison time. Upon release, he maintained contact with former inmates, some of whom assisted with his escape and supported the crimes. Police are investigating the network while examining missing persons cases in the area before and after the suspect's release to determine if there are connections to other incidents.

The police commander said he will coordinate with the Department of Corrections to develop a system for monitoring high-risk released prisoners and will tighten controls on the sale of uniforms and equipment that could be misused to impersonate officials through online channels.

Regarding tourism impact, police affirmed the incident is unlikely to damage confidence since the Russian victims were not tourists but long-term residents. They pledged to strengthen security measures for both tourists and the public.

PATTAYA — On August 1, 2026, the Pattaya Provincial Court denied bail for two men accused in the killings of five people whose bodies were buried in Chonburi, citing the seriousness of the alleged crimes, the severe potential penalties, and the risk that they could flee.

Police from Huai Yai Police Station brought Thana, 43, also known as Pong, and Thongchai, 39, also known as Thong, before the court for their first detention hearing.

The men are accused of killing a 22-year-old Russian woman and her 17-year-old brother after the siblings disappeared with a motorcycle in Chonburi. Their bodies were later found buried.

Police said the suspects also confessed during questioning to killing a family of three — a father, mother and child — and burying their bodies in a nearby area.

In the case involving the Russian siblings, the suspects face charges including jointly committing premeditated murder to obtain or retain benefits from another offence and to conceal another crime, committing robbery at night while dressed as police officers, and jointly possessing firearms and ammunition without permission.

The court rejected their bail applications, noting that they had been arrested under court warrants, faced serious charges carrying heavy penalties and were considered a flight risk. Investigators also opposed their temporary release.

The court separately denied bail in the case involving the family of three, Pattaya Provincial Court case No. 597/2569.

The charges in that case include jointly committing premeditated murder to obtain or retain benefits arising from another offence and to conceal another crime, committing robbery at night while impersonating police officers, and jointly possessing firearms and ammunition.

The court again cited the severity of the alleged offences, the potential punishment, investigators' objections and concerns that the suspects could flee.

Corrections Department officers later transferred both men to Pattaya Remand Prison.
