Monk Dies in Apparent Suicide at Udon Thani Temple
A 44-year-old monk was found dead with a severe neck wound at a forest temple in Kumphawapi, Udon Thani, in an apparent suicide; police are investigating his possible mental health history.
On October 27 at 5:45 p.m., Kumphawapi police received a report that a monk at a forest temple in Kumphawapi district, Udon Thani, was showing signs of distress and had harmed himself inside his quarters. Officers, investigators, and rescue volunteers rushed to the scene, but were informed en route that the monk had already died. At the scene, they found the body of Phra Inthorn, 44, lying face down on a yellow robe. He had a large wound extending from his neck to his windpipe. A kitchen knife approximately one foot long lay near his right hand. Blood stains were spread widely across the hut's interior and walls, creating a gruesome scene. Inside the hut, officials also found a hospital medication packet labeled for one tablet daily before bedtime, along with a doctor's appointment slip dated December 3, 2026. Preliminary information suggests the monk may have had a history of mental health issues, but investigators are verifying medical records and consulting relevant agencies to confirm the facts. The body was sent to Kumphawapi Hospital for an autopsy while investigators gather evidence and interview witnesses. Relatives from Pon Phisai district, Nong Khai province, are traveling to the temple to provide information. The initial assumption is that stress and underlying health conditions may have been factors.
