Mother Demands Hospital Investigation After Newborn Dies at 5 Days

A mother is demanding investigation after her newborn died five days post-delivery, claiming hospital staff neglected care and were distracted during the critical day before the infant's death on July 21.

Mother Demands Hospital Investigation After Newborn Dies at 5 Days
27 Jul Khaosod

On July 27, a mother of a newborn who died five days after delivery spoke emotionally about the circumstances surrounding her infant's death, asserting that her child's condition had worsened since July 20, yet the hospital did not call to inform her until July 21 at approximately 9:00 a.m. Upon arriving at the hospital, she found approximately six nurses sitting together but no one attending to or allowing her into the ICU to see her child, forcing her to request access before being permitted inside.

The mother stated that had staff shown greater attention to her child that day, the infant might have survived, as the child was still treatable before dying the following day. She remains troubled by whether anything unusual occurred that led to her child's death.

Regarding CCTV footage, the mother requested a clear review of images, particularly those showing nurses opening the door to bring out wooden items and flowers before returning inside, to confirm that approximately six people were present inside eating food. She emphasized that neither she nor the child's father intended to accuse anyone but simply wanted the facts investigated, as the family believes what they have witnessed is true.

The mother also requested clear verification that persons appearing in the footage are the same individuals who accepted flowers and participated in the activities, without intending to harm anyone. She simply wants a straightforward factual investigation.

The mother expressed that she does not want other children to face the same situation her family experienced, calling for adults and relevant authorities to investigate and work to improve the system so such conduct does not occur again.

When asked about reports that the hospital may have held similar gatherings before, the mother said she would welcome the opportunity to speak with those involved to investigate what happened and who was responsible. She reiterated that she had no intent to accuse anyone and would not discuss matters that were untrue.

The mother also revealed that before delivery, during pregnancy she had undergone routine ultrasound examinations without finding any abnormalities reported by doctors, only issues with diabetes management. The doctor did not initially want the child to deliver prematurely. When she experienced abdominal pain, the hospital observed her condition, but when her amniotic fluid broke, delivery became necessary. The doctor had forewarned that the infant might be weak and would likely require ICU care.

On July 20 at approximately 11:00 a.m., the mother visited the hospital to check on her child's condition. The doctor and nurses reported that the infant was improving, could have medications adjusted, and breathing support reduced, which delighted the mother. She discussed with the child's father the possibility of transferring to a Bangkok hospital for continued treatment and a chance at recovery, both speaking of finally being able to feed their child.

After this, nursing staff informed the mother that the infant's supplies had run out and asked her to purchase items. The mother told the child's father to go shopping, fearing they would miss the afternoon 2 o'clock visiting hours. The mother returned to the hospital around 1:30 p.m. with the supplies.

However, upon entering the hospital, the mother said she detected the smell of food, and as she approached her child's bed, she witnessed staff members taking selfies and receiving flowers, with a dining table where people were eating positioned near the infant's bed.

Thailand Launches One Map Initiative to Standardize Land Data
27 Jul Khaosod

One Map represents more than a new map—it is the foundation for making state land transparent, accurate, and universally understood. Land issues touch nearly every aspect of life, from farming and housing to urban development, resource conservation, and national planning. Past government land management has been hampered by conflicting boundary data from different agencies, with some areas showing overlapping or inaccurate lines, causing misalignment across departments and confusion between officials and local residents. The One Map initiative—an integrated state land boundary mapping project at 1:4000 scale—aims to give the country accurate, clear, and uniform land boundary data under the principle of "one area, one responsible agency." In essence, One Map ensures all government agencies use the same map data, see identical boundaries, and understand which areas fall under whose jurisdiction, reducing duplication, resolving conflicts, and enabling systematic solutions to land problems at the local level. On July 16, 2025, the National Land Policy Committee Office (NLPCO) held a seminar on promoting understanding and advancing Phase 2 of the One Map project at the Asvapura Grand Convention Hotel. Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsri presided over the event, which brought together government officials, relevant stakeholders, and media to discuss the initiative's direction and explore practical applications of state land boundary data. The seminar featured presentations on the land boundary mapping operations and a panel discussion including Royal Thai Survey Department Director General Chakr Bunyapakdi, Institute of Political Science and Policy Analysis Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thanaporn Sriyakul, and Commissioner Poonsakdi Chanchapi on natural resources and environment to share lessons, challenges, and collaboration strategies going forward. Deputy PM Thongsak emphasized that the government prioritizes balanced natural resource use alongside agricultural land allocation, basic infrastructure development, livelihood promotion, and improved quality of life, with One Map serving as a crucial mechanism to clarify land boundaries fairly and enable effective area management. Currently, One Map covers seven provincial groups, with four groups totaling 44 provinces already approved by the cabinet, while groups 5, 6, and 7 covering 33 provinces have completed boundary mapping and await cabinet consideration. The heart of One Map lies not merely in a new map but in creating "central reference data" that all parties—government agencies, local officials, and citizens—trust and use together, enabling more effective state land management.

Health Ministry: Ang Thong Hospital Care Met Standards, Meal Held Near ICU Inappropriate

Health Ministry officials confirmed that medical care at Ang Thong Hospital's neonatal ICU met standards, but deemed a meal function held in the ward itself inappropriate and in violation of infection-control protocols.

Health Ministry: Ang Thong Hospital Care Met Standards, Meal Held Near ICU Inappropriate
27 Jul Khaosod

On July 27, 2569, at the Ministry of Public Health, Permanent Secretary Dr. Somruks Jungsaman provided updates on the investigation into a meal function held near the neonatal ICU at Ang Thong Hospital. The ministry ordered provincial health officials to examine the matter, with the provincial health office establishing an investigation committee the previous week after the incident came to light. The case has been divided into two parts: medical treatment and the meal arrangement held in the ward.

Dr. Somruks explained that a committee was formed to review the medical treatment aspect. As a pediatrician himself, he confirmed that the infant's care—from diagnosis through death—followed standard medical protocols. Neonatal ICU patients are kept in incubators, and any interaction with them requires staff to wash hands, wear gloves, open the incubator, perform the procedure, and then close it again; these are standard infection-control measures.

"The room is a neonatal ICU, but a meal function was held there," Dr. Somruks said. "Standard practice at all inpatient facilities—whether general or ICU wards—is to have staff eat meals outside the patient care area so they can closely monitor patients." He noted that the meal was apparently organized to mark the transfer of outgoing and incoming pediatricians, which resulted in activities outside the designated area. While details remain unclear, he described the arrangement as inappropriate and warranting an investigation expected to conclude by Friday, July 31.

When asked about potential penalties, Dr. Somruks said he preferred to await the investigation results before speculating. The meal event involved the entire pediatrics department—typically comprising two to three doctors and ten to fifteen nurses—and he emphasized that ICU wards have strict operational standards designed for patient safety and infection control. "This likely will not result in revocation of professional licenses, but holding a meal function in an ICU is inappropriate. We need to see the specific details of how it was conducted," he concluded.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Perisivivattana announced that the Cabinet has approved a draft royal decree to exempt personal and corporate income tax on compensation payments from the Department of Fisheries to fishing boat owners participating in the unlicensed vessel removal program for sustainable marine resource management in 2025 and 2026. The tax exemption totaling 167 million baht—comprising 160 million in personal income tax and 7 million in corporate income tax—will allow affected fishers to use the full compensation as capital for new livelihoods and improved living standards without tax deductions at year-end. The Cabinet approved the latest phase of the boat removal program on March 3, 2025, allocating 1,622.6 million baht in compensation for 923 vessels: 877 boats to be dismantled, 1 vessel to be repurposed as a café, hotel, or library, and 45 boats to be converted for other commercial uses, with payments distributed in two installments through 2026. The measure follows the same tax principles applied to previous government boat removal phases and is intended to balance support for affected fishing communities with marine conservation and sustainable fishing promotion, with relevant agencies tasked to monitor outcomes continuously.

27 Jul Khaosod

At 09:39 on July 27, 2569, a reporter near Nong Prue Police Station in Bang La Mung district, Chon Buri, spotted a distressed man wearing only black underwear and holding a blue helmet as he walked to file a theft report. The man, identified as Anon (surname withheld) or "Uncle Watthan," 61, explained that he had ridden his white and blue Honda Wave motorcycle to the Mab Prachan Reservoir to fish. After parking the bike by the water's edge, he removed his clothes, placed the key in his pants pocket, and waded in to set his traps.

When he returned to shore, both his motorcycle and clothes had disappeared, leaving only his helmet and sandals. He was forced to walk out wearing nothing but his underwear to seek help. Watthan recalled that before entering the water, he had noticed a man and woman sitting near his motorcycle but thought nothing of it. When he emerged, both the couple and his vehicle were gone.

Watthan appealed to the thieves to return the motorcycle, lamenting that he had only recently completed the payments on it and had gained nothing from the outing—not even fish. Municipal officials from Pong Subdistrict, who initially suspected he might be a person with mental health issues, assisted him in filing an official complaint with Nong Prue Police Station. Officers are now gathering evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.

True Corporation Launches SkyBridge Air Logistics Platform for Healthcare
27 Jul Khaosod

While Thailand has a comprehensive public healthcare system, access to medical services in remote areas remains a significant challenge, particularly in mountainous regions and areas with poor transportation infrastructure. This hampers the delivery of medicines, medical supplies, and diagnostic samples, as well as emergency patient care during disasters when roads are cut off.

True Corporation's Research and Innovation Center has introduced True SkyBridge, an autonomous air logistics platform designed to deliver medicines and medical supplies to remote areas in both normal and crisis situations. The platform recently demonstrated its success in real-world operations in Nan Province through collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and network partners, proving that distance will no longer be a barrier to healthcare.

Ekkaraj Panjvinin, head of research and innovation at True Corporation, stated that the innovation originated from the intention to use technology to solve real problems and benefit Thai people. The company ensured that the innovation had potential for broad expansion and could improve both the industry and people's quality of life, making healthcare the top priority. "We're not just making drones, but creating a platform that connects all stakeholders into an ecosystem and truly solves the problem," he said.

The heart of True SkyBridge is not the drone itself, but a platform that integrates all aspects of medical logistics, from aircraft and AI systems to flight control centers, hospitals, health authorities, and regulatory agencies such as the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

True SkyBridge differs from typical platforms as an open system that can connect with drones from multiple brands and types, allowing for easier fleet management and future expansion. The platform is powered by an AI system that not only controls autonomous flight but also analyzes and makes decisions throughout each mission, from assessing urgency and weather conditions to analyzing airspace restrictions, payload weight, and selecting optimal routes.

For emergencies such as blood transport for surgery or urgent medical supplies, the system automatically prioritizes tasks to ensure critical items arrive first. The platform also features a Disaster Resilience Mode that instantly adjusts operations during floods, landslides, or road cutoffs by prioritizing the transport of life-saving equipment, AED machines, blood, medicines, and emergency supplies.

Another highlight is the Cold-Chain Intelligence system designed for transporting blood, vaccines, and medical samples that require strict temperature control. The platform monitors and records temperature throughout the route and immediately alerts if conditions approach critical levels. True SkyBridge is also designed to integrate with existing healthcare operating systems, allowing medical personnel to order missions, track progress, and confirm delivery results from their hospital systems.

Customs Seizes 25 Million Baht in Drug Shipment to Phuket
27 Jul Khaosod

The Customs Department is ramping up enforcement operations against illegal drug trafficking in line with government policy, following the successful seizure of 5.26 kilograms of ice and over 100,000 methamphetamine pills worth approximately 25.15 million baht that were concealed in an ice container shipped to Phuket province. Officials are expanding the investigation into the smuggling network. On July 27, 2025, Region 5 Customs Office, working with related agencies, conducted operations in Phuket and successfully intercepted crystal methamphetamine and methamphetamine tablets hidden inside an ice cooler in a parcel box. Customs Director Panthong Loaygulanant stated that the department is implementing urgent policies set by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprayat to strengthen prevention and suppression of drug trafficking. All sectors are integrating efforts to increase vigilance and monitoring of illegal drug imports, exports, and transit to prevent Thailand from becoming a drug trafficking route, with enhanced checks at all entry points including airports, border checkpoints, and postal systems nationwide. On July 22, 2025, Region 5 Customs officers conducting random inspections at a private transport company in Phuket discovered a suspicious parcel. X-ray screening and chemical testing confirmed the presence of Schedule 1 narcotic drugs consisting of 5.26 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in transparent plastic bags and approximately 100,000 orange and green methamphetamine tablets in blue plastic bags, with a total estimated street value of 25.15 million baht. Following the discovery, authorities coordinated with the Phuket Narcotics Control Bureau and Region 2 Narcotics Suppression Command to expand the investigation into the sender, recipient, and other parties involved in the smuggling operation. The charges fall under the Narcotic Drugs Act regarding unauthorized possession with intent to distribute for commercial purposes, causing public harm and threatening national security or public safety. Customs Director emphasized that this seizure reflects the department's commitment to working with narcotics police to prevent drug smuggling through parcel channels into world-class tourist destinations like Phuket, ensuring public safety and national security.

27 Jul TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 27 July 2026 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is celebrating the inscription of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat on the UNESCO World Heritage List as Thailand’s ninth World Heritage property and sixth cultural property. TAT is carrying this historic recognition forward through “The Twelve Sacred Discoveries Nakhon Si Thammarat: A Journey to World Heritage” campaign, a year-round programme inviting visitors to discover the site’s living Buddhist heritage across the seasons.

The World Heritage Committee inscribed the property at its 48th session, held from 19–29 July 2026 in Busan, Republic of Korea, following a recommendation by the International Council on Monuments and Sites. Recognised for its Outstanding Universal Value under criteria (ii) and (vi), Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan has served as a major regional Buddhist centre since its foundation in the eighth century.

Religious and architectural traditions from northeastern India, central Java, Sri Lanka and the Mon region of southern Myanmar were integrated into the monastery’s buildings, rituals and cultural practices. Its distinctive artistic and architectural expressions subsequently exerted an enduring influence across Thailand and Southeast Asia. Religious and local traditions have continued at the monastery for more than 1,500 years, including the annual cloth-wrapping ceremony for the Great Reliquary and the Nora dance drama.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, “TAT will build on this recognition to position Nakhon Si Thammarat as a leading destination for living heritage, where faith, culture and community remain central to the visitor experience. Our focus is to create lasting value through responsible tourism, strengthen local participation and ensure that the significance of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is understood, respected and sustained for generations to come.”

The inscription brings Thailand’s World Heritage portfolio to nine properties, comprising six cultural and three natural properties. The cultural properties are the Historic City of Ayutthaya; Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns; Ban Chiang Archaeological Site; The Ancient Town of Si Thep and its Associated Dvaravati Monuments; Phu Phrabat, a testimony to the Sīma stone tradition of the Dvaravati period; and Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan. The natural properties are Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries, Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex and Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex.

The inscription is being celebrated across Nakhon Si Thammarat through a two-day programme concluding today, 27 July. Organised by the province with government agencies, private-sector partners and local communities, the programme includes Nora and Khon performances, merit-making and alms-giving, Buddhist chanting, ordination ceremonies, meditation sessions and exhibitions. Nora and Khon are both recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Together, the activities present the historical, religious, artistic and cultural significance of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan while reflecting its continuing role as a centre of worship and community life. They also celebrate the traditions and cultural identity of Nakhon Si Thammarat and southern Thailand.

Running alongside the celebrations, TAT is hosting a commemorative photo booth from 25–30 July near the sacred Bodhi tree and Sai Kaeo courtyard, opposite Phra Wihan Luang and in front of the souvenir centre. Visitors may register to receive an instant photograph and digital image marking Thailand’s newest World Heritage inscription and share the story with wider audiences.

Beyond the commemorative programme, TAT will extend the recognition throughout the year through “The Twelve Sacred Discoveries Nakhon Si Thammarat: A Journey to World Heritage” campaign. Under the concept “Discover the Past. Share the Faith. Shape the Future.”, the campaign invites visitors on a journey through the province’s Buddhism, ancient civilisation and enduring traditions.

Each month and season will reveal a different dimension of the royal monastery, from its architecture and inherited wisdom to Buddhist teachings and stories of faith. Guided by the local saying, “everyone should pay homage to Phra That of Nakhon Si Thammarat at least once in their lifetime”, the campaign will encourage deeper understanding of the property while supporting responsible visitation, heritage conservation, local participation and sustainable economic opportunities.

Participation in the commemorative activities is free of charge. Further information is available from the TAT Nakhon Si Thammarat Office at +66 (0) 7534 6515–6 or through the Facebook page TAT Nakhon Si Thammarat Office.
