Parents Demand Answers After Newborn Dies in ICU During Hospital Banquet
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., at the Ang Thong Provincial Health Office, Paveena Hongsukul, director of the Paveena Hongsukul Foundation for Children and Women, accompanied the grieving parents—a 40-year-old father and 36-year-old mother—who lost their five-day-old newborn. They met with Dr. Thaveechok Rojanaaramphakul, the provincial health officer, to report the infant's death and raise concerns about whether a Chinese banquet held in the pediatric ICU may have been a factor. The mother tearfully described how medical staff had been seated eating a Chinese banquet inside the pediatric ICU room, positioned near her baby's incubator with only a thin transparent curtain separating them. When she attempted to visit her child, a nurse harshly turned her away, saying visitation was not convenient that day due to the banquet.

The mother had asked the head of the pediatric ICU whether such events were permitted in the unit. The attending physician had assured her there was no infection risk because the baby was in a sterile incubator, yet she observed banquet staff entering without wearing masks, working in close proximity to the incubator with no protective measures. On the morning of July 21, a nurse called to say the infant's condition had become critical overnight. Around 10:00 a.m., the doctor reported they had performed chest compressions on the baby and informed the father privately that the child had contracted a new bloodstream infection due to a slowed heartbeat. After examining the baby for 45 minutes, the doctor emerged and announced the child had died, urgently requesting the body be removed from the ICU for a temple ceremony. A nurse later called asking whether they had proceeded with cremation or the funeral rite.

While preparing their child's funeral at the temple, the parents remained unable to accept the circumstances and harbored grave doubts about the true cause of death. They contacted the Paveena Foundation seeking justice and help uncovering what really happened. The father has since drawn a detailed diagram of the ICU room layout for the media, explaining the various risk factors their child faced.

Government Scraps Land Bridge Project Over Poor Returns

The government has scrapped the Land Bridge project linking the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, citing financial returns that dropped from 8% to 4.8% and environmental concerns affecting mangrove forests and fishing communities in Ranong

Government Scraps Land Bridge Project Over Poor Returns
24 Jul Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas and a cross-ministry committee announced on July 24 that the Land Bridge project—a major transport infrastructure scheme to connect the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea—should be terminated in its current form. The committee's study, completed before the 90-day deadline, concluded the project faces low viability due to budget and multi-faceted risks, with no land acquisition or construction losses yet incurred since work has not begun.

The central obstacle is financial returns, which have deteriorated significantly from original assumptions. Danuja Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Council for Peace and Prosperity (NCPO) and chair of the economic and finance working group, reported that the revised financial return rate dropped from 8% to 4.8%, while net present value (NPV) swung from a projected positive 637.7 billion baht to a negative 10.3 billion baht. Container volumes declined 15–16%, cutting returns by 38%, and nine of the world's ten major shipping lines have already invested in similar projects elsewhere, leaving only one minor player available. Transit operations also face high risk because cargo must be transferred multiple times across ships, trucks, and rail, with the original three-day calculation not accounting for handling delays or actual transshipment costs.

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry flagged environmental concerns: the route passes through forests, mountains, and sensitive ecosystems. Ranong Province hosts Thailand's largest mangrove forests, internationally designated wetlands, and Biosphere Reserve areas; construction could harm marine life, traditional fisheries, and coastal communities. Multiple EIA and EHIA reports lack critical detail and were prepared separately by three agencies, undermining holistic impact assessment. The 2016 Strategic Environmental Assessment does not cover the current alignment and is insufficient for a large strategic project.

The Transport Ministry reported sharp social divisions: support groups, concerned parties, opposition groups, and unengaged citizens remain at odds, particularly traditional fishing communities, Moken groups, conservation networks, and Chumphon-Ranong residents worried about environmental damage, transparency, and livelihood impacts. Deputy PM Ekniti concluded that while the Land Bridge is being scrapped, the government will not abandon transport infrastructure development and will pursue alternative solutions.

Vietnamese Woman Dies After Extreme Weight Loss Diet

A 26-year-old Vietnamese woman died from a brain hemorrhage while exercising after an extreme diet combining vegetable restriction with daily high-sodium and fried breakfast foods weakened her blood vessels.

Vietnamese Woman Dies After Extreme Weight Loss Diet
24 Jul Khaosod

Doctors have highlighted a cautionary case involving a 26-year-old Vietnamese woman who died suddenly from a brain hemorrhage after losing consciousness while exercising with a jump rope at home. Although she had successfully controlled her diet and lost weight, physicians noted that extreme weight loss combined with certain breakfast foods may have accelerated arterial hardening and blockage. Vietnamese media reported that during her weight loss period, she ate primarily vegetables and grains, avoiding meat for approximately two months. The incident occurred while she was exercising, when she suddenly experienced severe headaches and lost consciousness. Her husband found her and rushed her to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save her due to severe brain bleeding. After reviewing her history, doctors discovered that she regularly consumed two breakfast items: salted egg porridge paired with puerh tea, and fried egg rolls, eaten almost daily during her diet. Doctors explained that salted eggs contain high levels of cholesterol and sodium, and consuming them in large quantities continuously can increase the risk of arterial hardening. Fried foods are high in fat, which can accumulate along blood vessel walls and increase the risk of arterial blockage. Physicians further noted that when blood vessels are weakened by poor eating habits, intense exercise such as rope jumping can cause blood pressure to spike rapidly and trigger brain hemorrhage. Experts emphasize that weight loss should be balanced, include all five food groups, and avoid regularly consuming foods high in fat, sodium, and cholesterol to reduce long-term cardiovascular disease risk.

Khon Kaen police are accelerating identification procedures for a suspect arrested in Kalasin on charges of stealing from patients and visitors at Yangtalad Hospital and allegedly committing similar crimes across 11 hospitals in seven Northeastern provinces. Police from Khao Suan Kwang station are examining the suspect's physical features and tattoos to determine links to thefts at other facilities throughout the Isaan region. Lieutenant Colonel Pirannart Ngomlertratcjai, commander of Khao Suan Kwang station, revealed that the suspect is identified as Songuan, 54, from Nong Lek subdistrict in Sikharam district, Surin province, who has confessed to the Yangtalad Hospital theft and to committing robberies across various areas of the Northeast.

Police are comparing physical descriptions, tattoos, and other identifying features visible in evidence to establish connections. If investigative findings and evidence confirm links to crimes in the Khao Suan Kwang area, officers will compile evidence for submission to court to request an arrest warrant and detention. Connections to thefts at other hospitals remain pending verification of identity and complete evidence collection from each jurisdiction.

Minister Files Defamation Complaint Against iLaw Director

Deputy Prime Minister's Office Minister Suksamruay Wandthaniyakul filed a defamation complaint against iLaw director Yingcheep Atchananont on July 24 over accusations linking her to vote-buying, which she says were made without evidence.

Minister Files Defamation Complaint Against iLaw Director
24 Jul Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister's Office Minister Suksamruay Wandthaniyakul and Bhumjaithai MP for Amnat Charoen filed a defamation complaint against Yingcheep Atchananont, director of Internet for People Law Project (iLaw), on July 24, 2025, at 5 p.m. at Amnat Charoen City Police Station. Suksamruay is one of those who claims to have suffered damage from Yingcheep's accusations linking her to a vote-buying operation. Suksamruay said she filed the complaint in Amnat Charoen simply because she was traveling home that day and had official duties in the area, with plans to visit Surin Province on Sunday. She said there was nothing special about the decision to file.

Regarding Yingcheep's recent plea to reconsider the complaint on grounds that it would appear undignified, Suksamruay countered by asking whether Yingcheep's own actions—making accusations without evidence—are truly dignified or fair. She noted that she and her colleagues have remained silent on the vote-buying case, waiting for the Election Commission to conduct its investigation through proper procedures.

Suksamruay questioned whether Yingcheep's public statements at this time held hidden intentions, especially since the allegations are based on old information and Yingcheep himself admitted having no evidence, only hearsay from others. She characterized this as making baseless accusations against her. Suksamruay stressed that her complaint is a lawful exercise of her rights, distinct from legitimate public criticism, and that she welcomes investigation. She called on Yingcheep to consider mutual understanding.

If iLaw as a group is accused of maintaining favorable ties to certain political parties and receiving suspicious funding to conduct political movements, yet the accusers provide no witnesses or evidence, this would be unfair and undignified toward iLaw itself, she added.

Panel Investigates Burial Site of Gun Used in MP Shooting

A House committee investigating an MP's shooting visited a Navy facility to verify claims that the gun used in the March attack was destroyed and buried in 2021, though no excavation was conducted to confirm the weapon's presence.

Panel Investigates Burial Site of Gun Used in MP Shooting
24 Jul Khaosod

On July 24, 2025, the House committee on law, justice, and human rights, led by Rangsiman Rome (deputy leader of the People's Party and committee chair), visited the Navy Weapons Bureau in Sattahip district, Chachoengsao province, to investigate facts surrounding the gun used in the shooting of Kamlasak Leewamao, Nakhon Si Thammarat MP from the Palang Pracharath Party, which occurred on March 20.

Evidence and investigative leads indicated that the firearm used in the attack had been decommissioned since 2021, handed over to the Navy Weapons Bureau for destruction, cut into seven pieces, and buried in a restricted military area. However, police later recovered what appeared to be the same weapon, prompting the committee to conduct on-site verification to clarify the matter for public understanding.

During the inspection, the committee received a briefing and observed a demonstration of the weapons destruction procedure. However, no excavation was conducted at the burial site, preventing verification of whether the weapon was actually present there. Committee chair Rangsiman Rome stated that without excavating the burial pit, they cannot conclusively determine whether the gun was genuinely destroyed and buried, or whether the burial itself was improperly conducted. He noted that the Navy has established its own investigation committee, and the parliamentary committee may request further documentation, particularly evidence related to the claimed destruction.

The committee acknowledged that definitive proof would require excavation, though such action may exceed the committee's authority. The shooting victim, MP Kamlasak, did not attend the site visit due to a pilgrimage commitment in Saudi Arabia, and delegated his lawyer and party representatives to accompany the committee and gather information for ongoing legal proceedings.

A Grade 9 student at a secondary school in Bang Khu Wiang subdistrict, Bang Kruai district, suffered serious injuries after falling through an old tiled roof on 24 July 2026. The student climbed onto the roof during lunch break to retrieve earphones that had fallen there while he was on the phone with his mother. When he stepped on the roof, the fragile tiles collapsed under his weight, causing him to fall through and strike his head on a wooden plank below, resulting in a fractured neck and seizures. Emergency responders rushed him to hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Police superintendent Pol. Col. Phasakorn Chaitawiwong was alerted to the incident, and an inspection revealed a large hole in the roof connecting two school buildings with broken tiles and wood scattered across the area. The school has since warned students about the dangers of accessing rooftops and other potentially hazardous areas on campus.

Two Cambodian Men Arrested After Stalking Bangkok Resident

Two Cambodian men were arrested after allegedly stalking and attempting to force their way into a Bangkok home where a Thai woman was staying, leaving her traumatized and unwilling to return.

Two Cambodian Men Arrested After Stalking Bangkok Resident
24 Jul Khaosod

A 31-year-old Thai woman says she remains traumatised after two Cambodian men allegedly followed her to her home, attempted to force open her door and left her afraid to return home.

The woman, identified as May, met police investigators at Chana Songkhram Police Station on Thursday to give her account of the incident, which occurred around 11pm on 21 July. She said she had been drinking with friends and was walking back to the alley where she has lived for more than 30 years when she saw two men standing near a wall. At first, she thought they were people she knew, but realised they were strangers as she got closer.

She said she held onto her bag, turned on her phone camera to record the situation, and walked past them. The two men then allegedly called out, "Come have a beer with us," but she refused. Moments later, one of the men wearing a red shirt allegedly ran towards her, forcing her to run back to her house.

After locking the door, she said the man tried to reach through the metal bars of the gate, causing her to scream and threaten to call police before running upstairs. CCTV footage showed the two men leaving the front of the house before returning again while she was calling police. She said they attempted to open the door once more, forcing her to shout at them to leave.

After the incident, May posted about it on Instagram. A relative known as "Bank Talad Indy" shared the post and helped organise local residents to search for the suspects. The two men were located and detained on 23 July, with the first suspect found at a rented room before police and residents tracked down the second suspect.

May said the suspects apologised after being detained, but she told them: "I already told you not to do it." She said she has been suffering from anxiety since the incident, crying every night and refusing to sleep at her home. She has temporarily moved elsewhere and vowed to continue legal action against the two men.

"I do not want to see them again," she said.

Meanwhile, the girlfriend of the suspect in the red shirt, identified as Chanvesna Touch, 24, visited him at the police station and apologised to the victim on his behalf. Sinh Sinh, 23, said she had been in a relationship with Chanvesna for eight years and they have a 10-month-old daughter.

She said her boyfriend told her he had been drinking more than seven bottles of beer with Cambodian friends before the incident. He allegedly saw the woman walking by and called out to her before following her. After watching the CCTV footage, Sinh said she believed her boyfriend's actions were inappropriate and that the case should proceed through the legal system rather than through violence.

She said Chanvesna denied touching or assaulting the woman, claiming he returned to the house because he wanted to apologise after realising she was frightened. She also said the second man, who was wearing a white shirt, only followed him and did not speak to or approach the woman.
