18 Jul Ko Lanta Police

Thailand's national police commissioner has ordered an escalated crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking networks, with a focus on investigating and pursuing the masterminds, financiers, and criminal organizations behind smuggling operations rather than just low-level couriers. Deputy Commissioner Samran Nulma has been tasked with elevating drug cases to international organized crime status, targeting smuggling routes from border areas into the interior and strengthening cooperation across all sectors. The order follows a case involving Thai air hostesses arrested in Australia for carrying drugs, which has been elevated to an international organized crime investigation. Authorities have arrested a drug packer and expanded the investigation after discovering heroin residue and a bag containing narcotics in a hotel room in Ayutthaya; the drugs were reportedly collected from Chiang Khong district in Phayao before transport. The investigation suggests links to international drug smuggling networks, and authorities are pursuing charges of participation in a transnational criminal organization. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is conducting laboratory testing of the seized materials to confirm net weight. Police spokesperson Lt. Gen. Trairuangchai Pipanphan explained that the seamless investigation strategy demonstrates enhanced investigative capacity, moving beyond arresting frontline actors like the air hostesses to pursue integrated task forces that track financial flows, analyze intelligence, and coordinate internationally to connect the entire supply chain from suppliers to packers, couriers, coordinators, commanders, and beneficiaries.

Revered Buddha Image Draws Fishermen's Devotion

Eastern Thailand's fishermen flock to a five-meter-tall Buddha statue at Wat Chong Saem Saen in Chonburi Province, seeking blessings for safe voyages and abundant catches before heading to sea.

Revered Buddha Image Draws Fishermen's Devotion
18 Jul Khaosod

The statue, officially named Phra Samphutmahaminisikunasuphonimit or "Luang Pho Dam," stands five meters tall in meditation pose within the main sanctuary of Wat Chong Saem Saen in Satthahip District, Chonburi Province. Eastern coast fishermen hold deep reverence for this sacred Buddha image, regularly visiting to pay respects and request blessings before heading to sea, believing they will return safely with abundant catches. According to the temple legend, in 1958 Luang Pho Dam Rung, an ordained monk from Suphan Buri Province's Wat Khao Khuen, traveled for several days after receiving a divine dream instructing him to erect a Buddha image near an old pagoda on the eastern seacoast. Upon discovering the Chong Saem Saen location matched his vision, he convinced relatives and supporters to donate materials for the statue's construction, a project that took approximately two years to complete without any protective covering.

The unadorned dark-painted statue eventually earned the nickname "Luang Pho Dam" (the Black Buddha Father) among local fishermen and boatmen, despite being formally named Phra Samphutmahaminisikunasuphonimit, a name meaning "the Buddha born from an auspicious dream." After standing exposed for over ten years, the statue finally received a roof and walls funded by grateful fishermen who had experienced answered prayers and successful catches. A decade later, as the original shelter deteriorated, Chonburi provincial council member Sanae Phitaksakorn worked with the temple's abbot to construct a quadrangular sanctuary featuring intricate wall murals and plaster reliefs depicting Buddhist history, officially opened on February 26, 1989. The temple has since become a pilgrimage site where visitors continuously arrive to pay homage and request blessings without interruption.

Unwitting Couriers Risk Jail for Carrying Contraband

People are being tricked into carrying illegal goods across borders unwittingly, facing serious jail time under Thai law for smuggling drugs, wildlife, and other prohibited items.

18 Jul Ko Lanta Police

Unwitting Couriers Risk Jail for Carrying Contraband. Common deception tactics include: asking you to carry sealed bags or luggage while claiming they contain gifts or personal items; hiding illegal goods mixed in with everyday items like presents, clothing, shoes, children's toys, or souvenirs; exploiting trust through friends, acquaintances, or social media with persuasive language that makes the courier feel obligated. Strictly prohibited items that carry severe penalties under Thai law include drugs, e-cigarettes, obscene materials, endangered wildlife, and protected species. Restricted items requiring import-export permits include animals, food, cosmetics, medications, communications equipment, and plant varieties. Be cautious even with good intentions.

In a candid interview, the 22-year-old reflected on her 15-year career journey that began at age 7, describing how she progressed from child actor to seasoned performer while proving her versatility. She credited producers and directors for creating opportunities across various roles and expressed pride in the hard work behind each character, including extensive preparation both mentally and physically. Mim began casting work at age 7, but her breakthrough came through the TV drama series Wasana Rak on Channel 3, though she remained a freelancer until recently signing with GMMTV and taking on a new role as a lead actress opposite Baifern Bairavee in Girl Love. She shared how discouraging it felt to audition for numerous roles without success, especially after her initial TV appearance, and how she questioned whether entertainment was truly her path. Despite her training in crying techniques since age 7 and steady casting work, she faced rejection in commercial roles and briefly considered pursuing law as an alternative career before ultimately choosing to continue fighting for her dream.

Same Gun Linked to Businessman's Death in Yala

A prominent businessman shot dead outside his Yala office in July 2024 was killed with the same rifle used in a previous attack on a territorial defense volunteer in June 2023, prompting investigators to focus on a violent extremist group.

Senior police official Tawi Ratchayong traveled to a Buddhist charitable association in Kaeng District, Rayong, to attend a merit-making ceremony and offer condolences to the family of Chatchawal Buranarak, commonly known as "Hia Chatch," a 60-year-old prominent businessman and owner of Samdao Parawood Company. Chatchawal was killed under suspicious circumstances outside his office in Muang District, Yala Province, on July 13, 2024.

Closed-circuit television footage from the office revealed clear details of the incident. At 10:26:58 a.m., Chatchawal arrived at the office entrance and bent down to check a package when an assailant from across the street fired a single shot. The 5.56-millimeter round penetrated his left chest and passed through his body. At 10:27:22 a.m., he collapsed as employees rushed to help. He died shortly after.

Forensic analysis of the bullet recovered from Chatchawal's body has linked the weapon to the same rifle used in a previous shooting on June 13, 2023, that killed territorial defense volunteer Issama Niwah in Bannang Sata District, Yala. The volunteer was shot while riding his motorcycle back to his base. Investigators are now focusing on a violent extremist group known to have used this weapon in previous attacks and are working to trace and apprehend the perpetrators.

Police Bust Drug Ring, Seize 4.5 Million Baht in Phatthalung

Police arrested two members of a drug trafficking ring in Phatthalung, seizing 4.3 million baht and a firearm linked to shootings used for debt collection. The network's leader remains at large across the border.

Police Bust Drug Ring, Seize 4.5 Million Baht in Phatthalung
18 Jul Khaosod

On July 18, 2025, the CIB coordinated a multi-location operation targeting the drug trafficking and illegal lending network operated by Komjak, alias "Doe Pa Phayom." Officers raided three locations in Phatthalung province, resulting in the arrest of two key network members: Pirun, or "Om," age 39, charged with unlicensed possession of a licensed firearm and ammunition, and operating an unauthorized personal lending business; and Kabin, or "Moss," age 27, charged with harboring smuggled goods.

The investigation grew from a series of incidents throughout 2024-2025 in which gunmen fired on homes across Phatthalung. Investigators determined the shootings were linked to debt collection for drug sales and intimidation campaigns orchestrated by Komjak, who is currently evading arrest across the border but continues to direct drug trafficking operations into Phatthalung and nearby provinces through network members.

At the first location in Khao Chiak subdistrict, police arrested Pirun and seized a 9mm firearm registered under another person's name, 13 rounds of ammunition, 300,000 baht in cash, unlicensed lending account books, 12 loan contracts, a mobile phone, and related items.

At the second location in Kuha Sawan subdistrict, officers arrested Kabin and found 4,263,520 baht hidden in the house. Kabin admitted the money was connected to drug trafficking and was being held on Komjak's orders. Police also discovered 40 electronic cigarettes and 30 packages of tax-evaded foreign cigarettes, prompting additional customs charges.

The third location, a residence in Ko Tao subdistrict in Pa Phayom, belonged to a 34-year-old woman with network ties. Although no major evidence was found there, investigators determined she had previously held network cash, and her financial records are under further examination.

Testing of the seized cash with methamphetamine detection solution yielded positive results, confirming drug contamination on the bills and corroborating the suspect's admission that the money came from drug trafficking. All cash and items will undergo forensic examination before prosecution. Authorities are continuing efforts to locate and arrest Komjak and other remaining network members.

Thai Chamber Plans 10 Major Events to Boost Economy

Thailand's Chamber of Commerce is organizing 10 major forums in the second half of 2026—including meetings with China and the US—to drive investment, trade partnerships, and economic growth across the country.

Thai Chamber Plans 10 Major Events to Boost Economy
18 Jul Khaosod

Phon Aramwattananont, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Thai Chamber of Commerce Federation, has outlined a second-half 2026 action plan featuring 10 major forums to create opportunities for Thai business and drive economic growth via the "Reinvent Thailand" approach.

Phon stated that major events should not be treated as standalone occasions but as catalysts for concrete trade, investment, network building, and advancement of Thailand's standing in the global economic arena. Viewed as a coherent strategy, Thailand's approach moves from hosting regional forums where it leads, into bilateral partnerships with economic giants China and the US, then strengthens domestic foundations, elevates participation in global energy and financial platforms, and circles back to expand benefits to local business networks across the country. The 10 key forums include:

1. Thailand hosted the third APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting from July 6–9, 2026, a major platform for business leaders from 21 APEC economies. As host, Thailand positioned itself to voice private-sector concerns directly to APEC leaders and shaped regional economic direction going forward.

2. The Thailand–China Cooperation Expo 2026, scheduled for July 22–25, 2026 at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, marks the second edition under the theme "Investing for the Future, Growing Together." The event will span over 20,000 square meters with more than 670 booths and some 270 leading companies, serving as a comprehensive platform for technology, innovation, trade, investment, and economic opportunity between Thailand and China. For Thailand, it channels Chinese investment in technology and robotics directly into Thai manufacturing supply chains and enables Thai entrepreneurs to match with Chinese partners instantly through B2B Matching activities.

3. The Thailand–U.S. Trade & Investment Summit 2026: "Building on a Longstanding Partnership" on August 17, 2026 at the Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit, co-hosted by AMCHAM Thailand, the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This forum will bring together government and private-sector leaders from both nations to explore fresh trade and investment opportunities amid rapid global economic shifts, covering commerce, tourism, agriculture and food, digital economy, sustainability, digital infrastructure, health and wellness, and creative economy. It aims to deepen bilateral economic ties, attract new investment, and integrate Thai enterprises into global economic and technology supply chains.

4. The Sampha-Navathong Award and Ethics Excellence Award ceremony for 2026, scheduled for August 26, 2026 at the Thai Chamber of Commerce University, honoring government agencies that improve performance, streamline processes, and enhance service delivery.
