Neymar Fires Back At Mathematician's Failed World Cup Prediction

Brazilian star Neymar has responded to a German mathematician's prediction that Japan would defeat Brazil in the World Cup Round of 32. Joachim Clement, a German mathematician and data analyst, became famous for accurately predicting World Cup champions three consecutive times: Germany in 2014, France in 2018, and Argentina in 2022. For the 2026 World Cup, Clement used a computational model combining various factors including per capita GDP, weather conditions, FIFA world rankings, and luck variables. He predicted the Netherlands would win the championship and potentially face Portugal in the final, and included a forecast that Japan would beat Brazil. "I don't make predictions for individual group stage matches, but I expect we might see Brazil facing Japan in the final Round of 32, and Japan will defeat Brazil," Clement said in his prediction. "At first, it may seem unbelievable to me because Brazil is the most successful team in World Cup history, but the current players are not in their best form, whereas Japan has an excellent team right now." However, Clement's predictions proved entirely wrong: the Netherlands was eliminated on penalty kicks by Morocco, while Brazil defeated Japan 2-1 in the 90th minute with a goal from Martinelli. Most recently, Neymar posted a tweet mocking the mathematician, saying "Joachim Clement, try again at the next World Cup," and ended the post with a winking emoji.
