Opposition Urges PM to Authorize Factory Inspections in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Opposition lawmakers visited Prachuap Khiri Khan province and documented severe environmental violations including illegal toxic waste dumping, wastewater discharge, and air pollution from four foreign-owned factories. They called on the Prime Minister to authorize customs officials to inspect unregistered factories, claiming foreign capital and influential figures are obstructing enforcement efforts. The opposition proposed three measures to address the crisis, warning that contamination could spread nationwide if the government fails to act decisively.

Opposition Urges PM to Authorize Factory Inspections in Prachuap Khiri Khan
48 min ago Khaosod

At 9:30 a.m. on August 19, 2025, at Parliament, opposition MP Karunphol Thiensuwan announced the shadow cabinet's review of the situation in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, stating that conditions are worsening rather than improving. Beyond illegal dumping of toxic industrial waste, community leaders are demanding serious action from the government. Field visits to Ta Toom subdistrict revealed complaints of wastewater discharge and strong odors, with residents reporting that state agencies have inspected multiple times yet the problems remain unresolved.

With five factories in the area—four foreign-owned—Thiensuwan noted concerns that foreign and large capital interests may be using money and off-the-books influence to obstruct state officials from solving these problems. He compared conditions inside and outside industrial zones, observing that factories within regulated industrial estates have laws and oversight allowing sustainable problem-solving, while unregistered factories outside such zones receive no attention. Without government action, he warned, residents who complain risk intimidation or disappearance. Officers acknowledged attempted checkpoints and inspections occur at night, but illegal earth-mining has created deep pits used as illegal dump sites, allowing toxic waste to seep underground.

In agricultural Prachuap Khiri Khan, a major fruit-growing region, underground contamination threatens not only local drinking water but farm products distributed nationwide. "If the state cannot manage foreign capital, influential figures, and toxic waste in Prachuap Khiri Khan, the problem will spread across the country," Thiensuwan said.

Opposition party leader Nattapong Rueangpanyavut noted that illegal dumping is not new; arrests are made but offenders are released. Immigration police stated they want to inspect unregistered labor in illegal factories but cannot proceed because gray-capital lawyers sue officials, making enforcement difficult. Officials are requesting an authorization document to conduct inspections without legal exposure. The opposition proposes three solutions, beginning with political courage: the Prime Minister should sign authorization allowing proper enforcement to protect public confidence in economic development through the Eastern Economic Corridor, while preventing additional problems.

Police Arrest Associate Of Woman In Land Dispute Case

Police arrested a woman's associate on charges of joint land encroachment in Bangkok's Phra Khanong area on August 19. The arrest drew scrutiny from the woman, who questioned why authorities had not apprehended him earlier when she visited the police station, and demanded clarity about which property was allegedly encroached. The arrested associate confirmed he was charged and transported to court for further proceedings.

On August 19, 2025, police arrested Khong, an associate of a woman identified as Pa Da, on suspicion of joint land encroachment in the Phra Khanong area. The arrest occurred at a restaurant as Pa Da and her group were about to dine. Plainclothes officers approached Khong, read him an arrest warrant, and transported him to Phra Khanong Police Station for interrogation.

Pa Da followed the officers to the police station and questioned why her associate was arrested without clear explanation of the charges. She emphasized that if the charge involved land encroachment, authorities should specify which property was allegedly encroached upon, and noted this appeared to be a recurring matter.

Khong later called Pa Da from the interrogation room and informed her he had been charged with joint land encroachment in the Phra Khanong area. He stated the case was unrelated to any matter in Khon Kaen province and expressed willingness to be investigated to determine the accuracy of the allegations. Khong also confirmed that police read the arrest warrant before taking him into custody. When asked why officers had not apprehended him when he initially visited the police station, Khong said he was equally puzzled. Officers subsequently transported Khong to the Phra Khanong Criminal Court.

Thailand Issues 15 Billion Baht Sustainability Bond in September

Thailand's Public Debt Management Office will issue a 15 billion baht sustainability bond in mid-September tied to environmental targets including reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by 47 percent by 2035 and protecting 30 percent of land

Thailand Issues 15 Billion Baht Sustainability Bond in September
1h ago Khaosod

Jindarat Viriyataveekul, director of the Public Debt Management Office, announced that the agency is preparing to issue its second Sustainability-Linked Bond (SLB425A) with a maturity of approximately 15 years and an initial allocation of around 15 billion baht. The bond is scheduled for issuance in mid-September, with the allocation deemed sufficient based on market conditions and investor demand.

The second SLB will be used to offset the 2025 budget deficit and will incorporate key performance indicators (KPIs) aligned with the country's policy objectives, distinguishing it from standard sustainability bonds that must directly support specific projects. Two sustainability metrics have been established, including a new indicator for biodiversity and forest conservation. If targets are met, investors receive the agreed interest rate; if targets are missed, the interest rate increases.

The first KPI aims to reduce the country's net greenhouse gas emissions, covering emissions from all sectors including land use, land-use change, and forestry. The target is to reduce net emissions to 152 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2035, representing a 47 percent reduction compared to 2019 levels. The second KPI seeks to increase protected land and water areas, including conservation zones outside designated protection areas, to at least 30 percent of the nation's total land area by 2030.

The Public Debt Management Office plans to conduct investor roadshows to present information about the SLB425A, its financing framework, and financial structure. Domestic investor events are scheduled for August 31, while international investor roadshows will be held in Hong Kong and Singapore between September 1-4. Investor demand surveys will be conducted on September 10 to determine appropriate interest rates and bond issuance amounts, taking into account market conditions, investment costs, and investor preferences.

The agency plans to continue issuing SLB instruments regularly, with this being the final issuance for fiscal year 2025. In fiscal year 2026, new bond types such as transition bonds are planned. For the 2026 budget, the Public Debt Management Office is preparing a public debt management plan to be submitted to the cabinet, which includes plans for new borrowing, debt restructuring, and issuance of new instruments such as long-term bonds, savings bonds, SLBs, and green bonds.

Gas Truck Overturns, Catches Fire on Chiang Mai Highway

A gas truck overturned and caught fire on the Chiang Mai-Lampang highway on August 19, forcing a two-hour firefighting operation and highway closure; wet road conditions are suspected as the cause, with no injuries reported.

Gas Truck Overturns, Catches Fire on Chiang Mai Highway
1h ago Khaosod

At 11:30 a.m. on August 19, the Chiang Mai Provincial Police command center received a report of an overturned gas truck that had ignited and caused a major fire on the inbound lane of the Chiang Mai-Lampang highway. Sariphi Police Station and local fire departments from the municipality and provincial administration mobilized to the scene. The burning truck exploded repeatedly, forcing officials to redirect incoming traffic to an alternate railway-adjacent route while closing the superhighway entrance completely. Firefighters deployed multiple engines and chemical suppressants, taking approximately two hours to contain the blaze. No injuries were initially reported, and officials were investigating the cause.

According to local residents, accidents are frequent in that area. Preliminary findings suggest the truck driver lost control on the wet, slippery road from recent rain, causing the vehicle to overturn and sparking the fire. At 12:30 p.m., Chiang Mai Provincial Police Deputy Commander Yuthana Kaenjun confirmed that firefighters had successfully controlled the fire with no casualties. Investigators were interviewing the truck driver, with initial findings pointing to slick road conditions as the cause. Sariphi Police cleared the highway, and traffic was able to resume.

Deputy PM Denies Interference in University Controversy

Deputy PM Yossakorn Wongswasdi denied his ministry interfered in a controversy at Prince of Songkla University's Pattani campus, insisting he only sought to verify that lawmakers' seminar complied with activity hour credit regulations.

Deputy PM Denies Interference in University Controversy
1h ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education Yossakorn Wongswasdi addressed the ongoing controversy at Prince of Songkla University's Pattani campus during an event at the Surat Thani campus on August 19, 2025. He used the platform to dispel criticism that his ministry intended to interfere with academic freedom, clarifying instead that he only sought to verify procedural compliance regarding activity hour credits.

The dispute arose after the Political Science Faculty invited lawmakers as speakers for an academic seminar, with student participants able to earn activity hours for attendance. This triggered widespread criticism about appropriateness and sparked concerns that the Higher Education Ministry might suppress academic and student freedom of expression.

Yossakorn explained that he became aware of the controversy through news reports and comments, which prompted him to ask the permanent secretary to verify details. He emphasized that the ministry's only concern was whether the activity hour arrangement complied with university regulations, not the content of the lectures. "Freedom of thought cannot be limited," he said, stressing that universities must remain open spaces for learning and exchanging ideas.

He reiterated on stage that there is no problem, no interference, and no restriction of rights. If the university follows proper procedures, it can conduct activities normally, and the Higher Education Ministry stands ready to support all learning initiatives. "The headline was a bit short and knocked me down," Yossakorn remarked, thanking the deputy rector for providing him the platform to clarify the matter that day.

Thailand's Industrial Confidence Hits 90.0 in July

Thailand's industrial confidence index rose to 90.0 in July, bolstered by surging electric vehicle sales and expanded trade opportunities, though geopolitical tensions and US tariffs pose ongoing risks to growth.

Thailand's Industrial Confidence Hits 90.0 in July
1h ago Khaosod

The Federation of Thai Industries reported that the July 2025 industrial confidence index reached 90.0, up from 88.2 the previous month. The improvement was driven by the expanding electric vehicle market, with first-half 2025 sales up 93.07% year-on-year, supported by accelerated domestic EV production under local manufacturing conditions. Trade negotiations with major partners including the United States, European Union, and China have opened new market opportunities and reduced trade barriers for Thai goods. Industrial exports such as hard disk drives and automotive components are showing strong growth in key markets like the US and Japan.

Fuel price measures implemented through July 24 to August 15 reduced diesel and biodiesel prices by 2.40 baht per liter, helping ease the cost of living and transportation costs. The Thai Help Thai Plus stimulus program has also boosted sales for small and medium enterprises, particularly in consumer goods, food, and beverages. However, the sector faces significant headwinds including escalating US-Iran tensions that could push up oil prices and shipping costs, US tariffs of 12.5% on Thai goods under Section 301, delayed public construction projects, a 3.1% decline in tourist arrivals, and rising SME debt levels at 9.5%.

The industrial confidence index for the next three months is forecast at 96.1, up from 94.5 in June, supported by Thailand's hosting of the IMF-World Bank meetings, which is expected to boost economic activity and Thailand's international profile. However, risks remain from prolonged Middle East tensions that could increase inflationary pressure and reduce exports to the region, particularly impacting automotive, wood product, rubber, and air-conditioning industries. Electricity grid conditions and investment guarantees set at 4.5 million baht per megawatt may also influence private sector investment decisions.

Heavy Rain Floods Nan, Damages Weir and Collapses Bridge

Heavy rain across Nan province has damaged an irrigation weir, collapsed a bridge on Highway 1256, and forced evacuations in multiple districts since August 19, with over 200mm of rainfall triggering flash floods and waterway overflows.

Heavy Rain Floods Nan, Damages Weir and Collapses Bridge
1h ago Khaosod

NAN — 19 August 2026, Heavy rain has caused flooding across parts of Nan province, damaging an irrigation weir, washing out a bridge on a key route and prompting authorities to urge residents in at-risk areas to prepare to evacuate.

In Santi Suk district, one side of the Na Lao irrigation weir was washed away by strong currents, damaging the road beside it, the Nan provincial public relations office said. Persistent heavy to very heavy rain has caused waterways in the district to overflow, flooding homes, farmland and some roads. Ban Pang Chang in Pong subdistrict was among the affected areas.

As of 06:00, heavy rain was continuing. Flooding made the Phayaeng–Kiew Muang road, a route into Nan's provincial capital, impassable, officials said.

Authorities used a motorboat from Pa Laeo Luang Subdistrict Administrative Organisation to assist residents stranded near the water at Ban Sri Bun Rueang in Pong subdistrict. Strong currents hampered the operation. Residents were also stranded on a bridge over the Muap stream at Ban Nam Song in Du Phong subdistrict. Santi Suk district later reported that everyone on the bridge had been brought to safety.

Flooding was also reported in Pua, Chiang Klang and Tha Wang Pha districts, particularly around the Nam Pua and Nam Khuang waterways. A bridge on Highway 1256, the Pua–Bo Kluea route, reportedly collapsed, making the road impassable to all vehicles. Authorities advised travellers heading to Bo Kluea to use Highway 1081 via Santi Suk instead.

Nan municipality said more than 200mm of rain had fallen in several areas, particularly Pua, Santi Suk and Mae Charim districts, since midnight, causing flash flooding in northern parts of the province. Water levels in the Yao River and Wa River were rising.

The municipality urged residents in at-risk communities in Nan city, especially areas flooded in 2006 and 2024, to move belongings and vehicles to higher ground and prepare to evacuate vulnerable people. Those who decide to remain at home were advised to prepare at least three days' worth of food, drinking water and medicine, along with lighting, cooking and communication equipment. The municipality warned that electricity supplies could be suspended in some areas.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation also urged authorities to move vulnerable residents, including elderly people and bedridden patients, to safer locations where necessary.

Former Coach Says Ray McDonald Could Have Made Thailand Youth Team

Well-known entertainer Ray McDonald, who had football talent that could have earned him a Thailand youth team spot, died at his home in Bangkok; his wife found him collapsed on a sofa, with autopsy results pending.

Former Coach Says Ray McDonald Could Have Made Thailand Youth Team
1h ago Khaosod

Coach Anurak Srigerd, a former Thailand national team midfielder, was shocked to learn of Ray McDonald's death and reflected that had McDonald chosen football over entertainment, he could have made Thailand's youth national team. Police Lieutenant Colonel Thappol Ampaipipattakul, commander of Prawet Police Station, confirmed that McDonald, a well-known entertainer and presenter, died on a sofa at his home on Pattanakarn 61 Road. His wife reported the death at 06:40 after security footage showed he collapsed at 00:12. The family indicated McDonald had no chronic illness, though officials are awaiting detailed autopsy results.

Beyond his entertainment career, McDonald, half Thai and half Scottish, was born in Roi Et province and played youth football for Thammasat Thai club alongside actor Chakarit Yamnam and Coach Anurak. Anurak recalled they trained together at the Thai Sports Authority field in Huamark, with McDonald about a year and a half younger. Coach Sumeth Kaewthiphyanet, who founded the team, brought McDonald and his equally talented older brother to the squad. Anurak noted that McDonald was a small but agile forward with distinctive flair, capable of playing any position. When Thammasat Thai entered the Thai League, McDonald had the opportunity to pursue entertainment—similar to fellow player Tao Somchai Kemklad—and chose that path, though with his football skills Anurak believed he could have made the national youth team.

Anurak also noted McDonald remained close to renowned footballer Sombun Inon and, according to Sombun's circle, never abandoned football after entering entertainment. McDonald sponsored youth football development in southern Thailand, leveraging his love of the sport to create opportunities for young players. Anurak learned of McDonald's death on the morning of August 19 from a rescue worker friend and initially doubted it, thinking McDonald was a fit, healthy athlete with no reported illness. He expressed condolences to McDonald's family.
