Police Arrest Money Launderer in Drug Cartel Crackdown

Police arrested a 27-year-old money launderer from Chiang Rai who operated shell bank accounts for the "Ball Khao Wised" drug trafficking network, part of an ongoing crackdown that has seized over 100 million baht in suspected drug proceeds

Police Arrest Money Launderer in Drug Cartel Crackdown
23 Jul Khaosod

Drug suppression police have continued their crackdown on the international drug trafficking network "Ball Khao Wised," arresting another member of a money laundering operation who was ranked as a priority suspect by the Royal Thai Police. On July 23, 2025, Police Lieutenant General Pathanasak Buphasawan ordered officers to arrest 27-year-old Kittisak (surname withheld) from Chiang Rai under arrest warrant number 103/2568, issued February 10, 2025, on charges of conspiracy to launder money. He was apprehended at a residence in Rim Kok Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Rai.

The arrest follows Operation "Takedown Mafia Yan Rok," during which police dismantled the "Ball Khao Wised" drug trafficking network and seized assets valued at over 100 million baht believed to be proceeds of drug trafficking. Investigators discovered that the network used "mule accounts"—shell bank accounts—to receive drug proceeds before withdrawing cash and transferring funds to associates to disguise the money as legitimate income or investments.

Investigators also found that most cash withdrawals by the drug operation occurred in northern border areas, making it easier to smuggle money across to neighboring countries. After gathering sufficient evidence, authorities obtained court approval for additional arrest warrants. Police determined that Kittisak was one of the mule account holders used by the "Ball Khao Wised" network and was ranked 208th on the Royal Thai Police's priority fugitive list. He was hiding in Chiang Rai when arrested.

During questioning, Kittisak denied knowledge of criminal activity, claiming he had been paid thousands of baht per account to open them to support his family, and was unaware the accounts would be used for illegal purposes. Investigators remain skeptical and have transferred him to the Investigation Division for further legal proceedings.

Rights Group Condemns Vigilante Assault on Article 112 Suspect

A Bangkok man with psychiatric history was beaten by self-described vigilantes over alleged monarchy-critical social media posts, then faced a lèse-majesté complaint at the police station, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.

Rights Group Condemns Vigilante Assault on Article 112 Suspect
23 Jul Khaosod

BANGKOK — A 42-year-old man with a psychiatric history was allegedly attacked by a self-described vigilante group after posting social media content critical of the Thai monarchy, then faced a lèse-majesté complaint under Article 112 of the Criminal Code, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR).

TLHR said the man, identified under the pseudonym "Thanit," was attacked on the evening of 22 July after members of a group calling itself "Kong Ruen Narok" (Hell Barracks) tracked him down at his residence in Bangkok's Don Mueang district.

The group had reportedly begun posting messages about searching for Thanit on 20 July, claiming it would locate him within 24 hours. According to TLHR, the group accused him of posting videos and messages on social media that referred to the monarchy.

Video clips circulating online appear to show dozens of people surrounding Thanit outside his residence. TLHR said the footage showed members of the group physically assaulting him, including repeatedly slapping him, kicking him, stomping on his head and body, and striking him with knees and elbows. The group's actions allegedly caused visible injuries, including bruising and damage to his glasses.

The group later took Thanit by pickup truck to Tao Poon Police Station, where a lèse-majesté complaint had already been filed against him on 21 July over Facebook Reels allegedly containing remarks about King Vajiralongkorn.

TLHR said police had not issued a summons or sought an arrest warrant for Thanit before the group brought him to the station. Members of the group reportedly remained in the area outside the police station afterward.

Police later examined and seized two of Thanit's mobile phones before any charges had been formally filed, according to TLHR. The rights group said police records stated that Thanit consented to the seizure and allowed officers to access data on the devices.

The phones were reportedly seized as evidence in connection with the Article 112 complaint, which was filed after an individual alleged that content posted through Facebook Reels contained remarks considered defamatory toward the monarch.

Lawyers from TLHR later accompanied Thanit to Don Mueang Police Station, where he filed a complaint against those allegedly involved in the assault. They also requested that police send him for a medical examination.

When lawyers met Thanit at Don Mueang Police Station late on 22 July, TLHR said he had bruises across his body, a swollen lip and head pain. The following morning, he was admitted to hospital after complaining of severe chest pain and was placed under emergency treatment.

TLHR said Thanit has received psychiatric treatment since 2007. He was released from prison in 2024 and had since stopped taking medication. The group also said he is the primary caregiver for his mother, who has Alzheimer's disease.

The incident has raised renewed concerns over the actions of self-described vigilante groups.

Palang Pracharath Chief Defends Party Against Agriculture Ministry Purge Claim

Palang Pracharath's secretary-general defended the party against allegations of resisting civil service transfers at the Agriculture Ministry, saying the party prioritizes worker morale and effective governance over retaining positions.

Palang Pracharath Chief Defends Party Against Agriculture Ministry Purge Claim
23 Jul Khaosod

Palang Pracharath Secretary-General Pai Likkhit addressed remarks by Nakhon Phanom MP and Pheu Thai deputy leader Monphon Sermsri, who had criticized civil service transfers at the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry after Agriculture Minister Thammanat Prompow announced his departure. Pai said the party does not cling to any ministry and urged Monphon not to overreact, noting that reports about problematic transfers came from ministry staff themselves. He reiterated that Palang Pracharath operates under the Prime Minister's oversight and confirmed that any party decisions are evidence-based.

Pai explained that the party's main concern is worker morale. If transfers occur as he suspects, most ministry staff will lose confidence rather than gain it, potentially harming the ministry's performance and encouraging corruption. He warned that such moves could undermine public sector effectiveness.

When asked whether to escalate the issue to a no-confidence debate, Pai said the party currently lacks strong evidence but will investigate thoroughly if problems surface. He stressed that party opposition to problematic transfers stems from experience in agriculture administration, not from any protective interest in keeping specific personnel in place.

17 Million Thais Face Retirement Crisis With Low Savings

Thailand's 17.3 million workers aged 46–60 face a retirement crisis, with average savings covering only 2.8 to 6.6 years of retirement despite life expectancy reaching 80–90 years.

17 Million Thais Face Retirement Crisis With Low Savings
23 Jul Khaosod

A report from Thailand's National Savings Fund (NSF), drawing on household economic and social surveys by the National Statistical Office and research from TDRI, reveals a troubling reality: Thailand is not only aging but facing longer lifespans and increased elderly isolation. The most urgent concern is the "wave" of workers aged 46–60, which has grown from 1990 to 17.3 million by 2024, representing 39% of the entire working-age population. The majority of this group (41.6%) are self-employed or small business owners who must plan independently for retirement savings over the next 10–15 years while facing rising living costs and stagnant savings.

Retirement spending crisis data shows that in 2024, average monthly expenses for ages 46–60 are 8,362 baht, while those aged 61–70 spend about 7,603 baht monthly. Current elderly allowances begin at only 600 baht per month, covering just 7.9% of necessary expenses. Additionally, living alone costs significantly more—solitary elderly spend an average of 10,087 baht monthly due to inability to share housing, food, and transportation costs.

Savings gap analysis reveals the financial vulnerability is severe. People aged 46–60 save only 4,416 baht per month on average. At this rate, those who start saving at 46 will have funds for only 6.6 years of retirement; those starting at 50 can cover 5.1 years; and those at 55 only 2.8 years. With Thai life expectancy now reaching 80–90 years (the population aged 90+ has quadrupled in 30 years), current savings are clearly insufficient.

The NSF promotes enrollment for self-employed workers, small merchants, farmers, and informal workers aged 15–60, offering substantial benefits: government matching contributions up to 100% (maximum 1,800 baht annually by age bracket); flexible contributions from 50 to 30,000 baht yearly; guaranteed lifetime monthly pensions at age 60; and full tax deductions up to 30,000 baht annually. As traditional retirement models—living modestly with adult children's care—fade, the NSF serves as a safety net for informal workers to achieve retirement security and dignity beyond age 60, supplementing government elderly allowances.

Interested individuals can enroll via the NSF mobile app, Line @nsf.th, or service counters nationwide. For inquiries, call the savings hotline at 02-049-9000.

Thailand Reaffirms One China Policy Amid Taiwan Tensions

Thailand's prime minister reaffirmed the country's One China policy despite Taiwan's criticism, asserting the stance will not affect bilateral cooperation or trade between Bangkok and Taipei.

Thailand Reaffirms One China Policy Amid Taiwan Tensions
23 Jul Khaosod

BANGKOK — Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Thursday reaffirmed Thailand's longstanding support for the One China policy, saying he does not expect Taiwan's criticism of Bangkok's stance to affect cooperation between Thailand and Taiwan.

Speaking at Government House, Anutin responded to a statement from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressing disappointment after Thailand endorsed language stating that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China.

"Thailand has always adhered to the One China policy. This is nothing new," Anutin said.

He added that Thailand remains open to cooperation in areas that do not conflict with its diplomatic position and stressed that Bangkok has not sought to restrict any form of cooperation.

Regarding Taiwan's expression of disappointment, Anutin said Thailand acknowledged the statement but maintained that its policy is clear.

"That is Taiwan's position, and we have taken note of it. Thailand's policy is clear, and I do not believe this will have any impact," he said.

When asked whether additional diplomatic efforts were needed to ease tensions, Anutin replied that both sides already understood each other.

Pressed on whether Taiwan might view Thailand as favoring Beijing, the prime minister smiled and said, "Our policy is One China. There is no leaning."

He declined to comment on reactions circulating on social media.

Asked whether the dispute could affect visa-free travel for Thai visitors to Taiwan or the large number of Thai workers employed there, Anutin again stressed that Thailand's position remained unchanged.

"Our policy is clear," he said.

The remarks come after Taiwan's foreign ministry criticized Thailand for endorsing language supporting Beijing's claim that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, following recent high-level exchanges between Thai and Chinese officials.

Student's AI-Generated Crocodile Photo Triggers School Search

A Chonburi school sparked an emergency search after an AI-generated image of a crocodile went viral on social media, prompting authorities to inspect the flooded campus before discovering the photo was fake and created by a student.

Student's AI-Generated Crocodile Photo Triggers School Search
23 Jul Khaosod

CHONBURI — Authorities in Chonburi rushed to inspect a flooded school after an image circulating on social media appeared to show a crocodile inside the campus, only to discover it had been generated using artificial intelligence by a student.

Heavy overnight rain caused flooding in several parts of Sattahip district, including Sing Samut School, where floodwaters disrupted access for students and parents. The school switched to online learning on Thursday as a safety precaution.

As residents followed updates on the flooding, a photo claiming to show a crocodile inside the school was shared online, including by the Sawang Rojanathammasathan Foundation after it received the image from a member of the public for verification. The image quickly spread, alarming students, parents and local residents.

Following the reports, Sattahip District Chief Nattawut Anuyotha ordered local officials, rescue workers and relevant agencies to search the school and surrounding area.

After a thorough inspection, authorities found no crocodile or any signs of one.

People's Party MP Thana Thanatharn Pramulpong, who represents Chonburi's 10th constituency, also visited the school after seeing the viral image and concerns over public safety.

Officials later traced the source of the image to a student at the school, who admitted using AI to create the fake crocodile picture before sharing it in a chat group. The image was then widely reposted, leading many people to believe it was real.

Authorities confirmed there was no crocodile at the school and urged the public to verify information before sharing it online, particularly images generated using AI, to avoid causing unnecessary panic and wasting emergency resources.

Taiwan Film Festival Showcases 17 Films Across Thailand

Taiwan Film Festival Showcases 17 Films Across Thailand
23 Jul Khaosod

The 8th Taiwan Documentary and Film Festival in Thailand 2026 has opened at House Samyan, bringing film lovers, critics, actors, filmmakers and industry figures together for five days of Taiwanese cinema. Running July 22–26, 2026, at House Samyan Century Sukhumvit in Bangkok and Pratudang Space in Khon Kaen, the festival features 17 films and documentaries spanning classics, contemporary fiction and short films.

At the opening ceremony, Pete Lan, representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand, welcomed guests and thanked audiences for their support of Taiwanese cinema. Lan noted that the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office and Taiwan's Ministry of Culture have worked with Thailand Documentary Club and partners for eight years to organize the festival and strengthen cultural exchange between the two nations.

This year's festival centers on the theme "family matters," marking the first time all three films in Ang Lee's acclaimed "Father Knows Best" trilogy are presented together. Lan drew parallels to a Thai saying about those without music in their hearts, suggesting viewers might reach similar conclusions about families lacking empathy, compassion, respect and love after watching the films. He emphasized that true family members must communicate through empathy, compassion, respect and love rather than pressure, coercion and threats.

The festival also features Girl (2025), the directorial debut of Taiwanese actress Shu Qi. The programme includes documentaries, classics such as Pushing Hands, The Wedding Banquet, and Eat Drink Man Woman, contemporary fiction, and short film programmes. A major highlight is Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), Ang Lee's closing chapter of the "Father Knows Best" trilogy, which earned him his second consecutive Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Thailand Plans Sea Bridge to Koh Chang by 2035
23 Jul Khaosod

TRAT — Thailand's Expressway Authority (EXAT) has unveiled plans for a sea bridge connecting Koh Chang island with the mainland, aiming to reduce travel times and replace long ferry waits.

EXAT presented the project's latest feasibility studies and gathered public feedback in Trat on Thursday, saying the bridge would improve access for residents, students, patients and tourists.

The project is expected to affect 66 landowners — 23 on Koh Chang and 43 in Laem Ngop district — with compensation to be based on market prices under the Land Expropriation Act 2019. The initial compensation estimate is expected to reach billions of baht.

EXAT said an EIA review would take about one year, with cabinet approval targeted for 2029. Construction could begin in 2031, with the bridge expected to open around 2035 if there are no delays.

The agency also plans to seek private investment through a market sounding process later this year. Toll fees are expected to be set close to ferry fares to avoid burdening local residents.

Many locals welcomed the project, saying it could bring long-awaited development to Koh Chang, despite concerns among some residents affected by land acquisition.

Truck driver leads two-hour chase across Korat before surrenderingLegacyA truck driver allegedly under the influence of drugs led police on a chase across three districts in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) today, July 23, before surrendering at a police station. Four vehicles were damaged during the pursuit, but no injuries or deaths were reported. The incident began at around 9.30am when the trailer truck failed to stop at two checkpoints. Officers launched an immediate pursuit as the driver continued through three districts. When the truck reached an intersection in Soeng Sang district, it collided with two pickup trucks. One of the pickups lost control and crashed into a streetlight on the road median, sustaining heavy damage. Another pickup was sideswiped elsewhere along the route, bringing the total number of damaged vehicles to four. Photo via MGR Online Police pursued the truck for nearly two hours before it stopped outside Soeng Sang Police Station at about 11am. Officers then searched the vehicle and found no illegal items inside. However, they allegedly recovered one methamphetamine pill from the driver, whose urine test later returned positive for the drug. The driver was identified as 49 year old Saengsawangwong, a resident of Soeng Sang district, Nakhon Ratchasima, and was taken into custody for questioning. According to police, Saengsawangwong said he was driving from Soeng Sang district to work in Sikhio district when officers signalled for him to stop before a checkpoint in Chok Chai district. He allegedly panicked because he had used methamphetamine and turned the truck around to avoid the checkpoint. Photo via MGR Online Police said Saengsawangwong turned back towards Khon Buri district, where officers had established a drug checkpoint, before driving through it and continuing to flee. He allegedly lost control of the truck due to its speed, causing the collisions with other vehicles. During the chase, Saengsawangwong said he spoke with his wife by telephone, who urged him to stop running and surrender to police. He then drove to Soeng Sang Police Station and turned himself in. Officers said Saengsawangwong apologised to everyone affected by the incident and admitted he had made a mistake out of fear of being caught. He also reportedly promised not to use drugs again. MGR Online reported that Saengsawangwong remains in police custody for further questioning before legal proceedings continue. Photo via MGR Online Elsewhere, two men were apprehended in Phuket following a high-speed pursuit with police, resulting in the confiscation of 65 grammes of crystal meth. Both individuals also tested positive for drug use. The story Truck driver leads two-hour chase across Korat before surrendering as seen on Thaiger News.
