Police Nationwide Launch Spider Web Checkpoints to Curb Crime
Police Lieutenant General Tri-rong Phuphan has ordered a nationwide increase in proactive crime‑prevention efforts, including the establishment of spider‑web style checkpoints and the sealing‑off of high‑risk areas. The measures target businesses such as gold shops, banks and jewellery stores, with more frequent patrols, foot‑beat checks, expanded CCTV coverage and rapid‑alert networks. From October 9‑17 police arrested over 1,300 suspects and seized large quantities of ya ba, firearms and explosives, while a separate encirclement operation from October 13 yielded similar results.
On 19 October 2069, Police Lieutenant General Tri-rong Phuphan, assistant to the national police chief, presided over a meeting of regional police commanders responsible for crime prevention, held both at police headquarters and online. He directed all police stations to survey and create a database of risky establishments—such as gold shops, banks, precious‑item buyers and jewellery stores—and to assess their risk levels. Patrol frequency was to be increased according to risk, with foot‑patrol officers meeting business owners to watch for suspicious activity under existing safety plans and appropriate crime‑prevention checks. Overall security was to be raised by integrating CCTV, alarm systems and physical barriers into action plans, and by establishing a rapid‑alert and warning network, emergency response plans and a monitoring system to verify results, with priority given to protecting lives over property. Additionally, he ordered the systematic setup of effective checkpoints under a “spider web” model and encirclement operations in risky areas across the country on a suitable schedule. From 9 to 17 October 2069 the spider‑web checkpoints led to the arrest of 1,306 suspects and the seizure of 289,318 methamphetamine tablets, 36 firearms, 79 rounds of ammunition, two explosives and other items. From 13 October 2069 the encirclement‑search operations resulted in 1,377 arrests, 199,628 meth tablets, 129 firearms, 436 rounds of ammunition, three explosives and further confiscations. Tri-rong Phuphan stressed that the national police will continue to intensify and sustain prevention and suppression of all crime types to ensure maximum safety for the public’s lives and property.
