Pork, Vegetable Prices Surge in Phichit After Diesel Hike
Pork and vegetable prices have jumped at Phichit Municipal Fresh Market after the government raised diesel prices, increasing transport and production costs. Pork prices rose 20-30 baht per kilogram while vegetables like coriander and spring onions surged by up to 100 baht per kilogram. Vendors report poor sales as cash-strapped customers cut back on purchases.
At Phichit Municipal Fresh Market on October 22, 2026, reporters found pork vendors raising prices across the board. 'Pae Yim', a pork wholesaler, explained that farms and farmer networks increased live pig prices by 4 baht per kilogram due to rising production costs, particularly animal feed and fuel. The government's continuous diesel price hikes have driven up transport costs for live pigs and meat distribution, forcing retail pork prices higher: lean pork from 130 to 150 baht per kg, pork shoulder from 110 to 140 baht per kg, and spare ribs from 120 to 150 baht per kg.
The price increases have deterred buyers, leaving the fresh meat market quiet and sales poor amid the sluggish economy. Vegetable vendors report similar impacts. 'Lung Too', a vegetable seller, said all vegetable prices have risen, with scarce items becoming especially expensive. Spring onions and coriander jumped from 250 to 350 baht per kg, holy basil from 100 to 190-200 baht per kg, Chinese kale from 40 to 70 baht per kg, tomatoes from 30 to 50 baht per kg, eggplant from 30 to 40 baht per kg, and Chinese broccoli from 50 to 70 baht per kg. Retailers say higher transport costs forced producers to raise prices, which they must pass on, but customer complaints mean business is slow.
