On October 24, reporters visited Wat Prasert Rang in Bang Khanak subdistrict, Bang Nam Priao district, Chachoengsao province, after receiving a report that a 14-year-old boy nicknamed 'Facebook' had suffered a fatal accident while riding his motorcycle home. He collided with a dirt mound believed to have been placed as a flood barrier, which bore no warning signs or reflectors, and streetlights in the area were not working. The crash occurred on the paved Khlong Khuean-Bang Nam Priao road in Moo 1, Bang Rong subdistrict, Khlong Khuean district, Chachoengsao.
The boy's 56-year-old grandmother, Ussa (surname withheld), said the accident happened around 6:30-7:00 PM while her grandson was returning home after fishing. He struck the dirt pile at the roadside, which had no markers or warning signs, and the broken streetlights made visibility poor. She found him lying in the road with a head wound and convulsions. She urged relevant agencies to prioritize public safety in all projects and construction, insisting on clear warning signs, symbols, and reflectors, especially at night, so road users can spot obstacles and avoid accidents.
She added that the same spot had caused injuries before and had been reported to authorities, but no proper fix was implemented until her grandson's crash. After the accident, officials cleared the dirt mound within a single day, raising questions about why preventive action was not taken earlier. Irrigation Department officers have approached the family about compensation, but no concrete steps have been taken.
The boy underwent emergency craniotomy on the night of October 19, finishing around 4:00 AM on October 20. By 6:00 AM, doctors declared him brain dead; he was kept on a ventilator and medication until his condition worsened on Wednesday. Doctors then discussed organ donation with the family, who agreed to donate his corneas, heart, and both kidneys to give other patients a chance at life. His body is lying in state at Wat Prasert Rang, with cremation scheduled for Wednesday, October 28.
Despite their profound loss, the family chose to make a final merit by donating his organs to help fellow humans awaiting transplants. They urge authorities to thoroughly investigate the accident's cause and facts, inspect the warning signs and lighting at the dirt mound, and establish a clear compensation process. They also call on all agencies to be more vigilant.
