Thai Cycling Aims for 2028 Olympic Spots After Asian Games
Thai cycling officials say the team remains on track to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics despite missing medals at the Asian Games. Women road riders are ranked 48th with 470 points, men 55th with 693 points, while BMX athletes sit in striking distance of qualification via the 2027 Asian Championships. The track squad has preserved its world championship quotas and aims for World Cup participation in 2027.
Gen. Decha Hakkarasri explained that in the road discipline, Olympic qualification goes to the top 43 nations in the UCI world ranking. After the Asian Games, Thailand’s women road riders sit at 48th with 470 points, while Greece, currently 43rd, has 555 points—a gap of 85 points. The men’s road team is ranked 55th with 693 points; Sweden, holding the 43rd spot, has 890 points.
He added that road qualification also offers two spots to the top two finishers at the 2027 Asian Championships in China, which will be held in June 2027. The road ranking period for the 2028 Olympics runs until October 2027.
For BMX racing, a separate Olympic Qualification Ranking is used. Thailand’s male BMX riders are 16th with 297 points, and the female riders are 11th with 290 points. The Thai BMX team has a strong chance to qualify by winning the 2027 Asian Championships, which Thailand will host in May 2027 at the Kamthieng Sports Complex on Suwinthawong Road in Bangkok’s Nong Chok district.
Regarding track cycling, Olympic qualification points come from world championships in 2026 and 2027, World Cup series in 2027 and 2028, and continental championships in 2027 and 2028. Although the Thai track squad did not medal at the Asian Games, they retained their quota for the 2026 World Championships in the team sprint, remaining 15th globally. The keirin and sprint events also secured spots in the 2027 World Cup rounds scheduled for Milton, Canada (April 2–4, 2027) and Hong Kong.
