Thai Opposition Leader Urges Faster Flood Relief in Chanthaburi

Nattapong Ruengpanyawut, list-system MP and Pheu Thai party leader, visited the flooded Nong Si Nga area in Nayaya Uam district, Chanthaburi province on September 27 to monitor the situation and meet with affected residents. He also visited a community kitchen at Sab Yi Ra Temple.

Nattapong expressed concern about the current situation, noting that although the Chanthaburi Meteorological Department has issued a maximum red weather alert, the Chanthaburi provincial governor has not yet declared the area a public disaster zone. He called on relevant agencies to urgently coordinate and work together as quickly as possible to provide timely assistance to flood victims.

Nattapong added that the Eastern region requires close monitoring, with continuous rainfall and heavy to very heavy rain in some areas, particularly in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces. The Western region also needs to prepare for potential flooding.

He expressed concern for residents in all affected areas, noting that some may face worsening impacts as rain continues and water levels rise.

Regarding Bangkok and surrounding areas, Nattapong suggested that if the situation develops as predicted, authorities should not only protect vulnerable groups and accelerate drainage but also prepare plans for area clearance, vehicle removal, and streamline compensation payment processes—especially in areas where water levels are already receding—so residents can receive help and resume their lives as quickly as possible.

Nattapong stated that after completing his mission in Chanthaburi and the Eastern region, he will return to Bangkok to continue monitoring the situation there and coordinate efforts to ensure disaster victims receive appropriate and timely state assistance tailored to conditions in each area.
