Thai national team striker Arm Suphachai Jaidej has tearfully paid tribute to Ray McDonald, the man he credits as his second father and most influential mentor. McDonald, who discovered Suphachai as a young footballer in Thailand's southern border provinces and became his sponsor at age 11, passed away two months ago. Suphachai has opened up about their relationship, from the moment McDonald recruited him for a trial in Sweden through to becoming a professional footballer capable of supporting his family with pride.

Suphachai recalled how McDonald came to the southern border provinces to scout footballers for a trip to Sweden. "I was just a kid playing football at home and at school down south," Suphachai said. "Ray had a program because he had once represented Thailand in competitions abroad. One day he came to select footballers to take to Sweden. I was one of those selected. Ray was club president at the time. He brought coaching staff and a football teacher to scout players. He supported the team and took us to compete. He did everything. At that time I didn't even know who he was, but after getting to know him I felt a strong bond."

Suphachai emphasized McDonald's profound impact on his life. "Ray lived alongside us and mixed with all the athletes. He treated everyone equally, not just the kids from the three southern border provinces but children from other nearby areas as well. Many southern kids knew Ray back then. He was someone who genuinely cared. Few people are like that—someone who gives opportunities to others."

When Suphachai was just 11 years old, McDonald asked his parents' permission to become his foster father and bring him to Bangkok to pursue a professional football career. "He promised my parents he would take care of me," Suphachai recalled. "I will never forget that. I was so happy. He gave his word to my parents that he would look after me."

Suphachai credits McDonald as the architect of his success. "Ray opened the door and gave me the opportunity. He set an example for me to strive and fight for everything to reach this point. He never took credit from me." Now playing for Buriram United, Suphachai occasionally returns to Bangkok, but treasures the foundation McDonald built for his entire career.

Minister Opens Doi Phu Kha Emergency Shelter, Deploys Helicopters

Helicopters deployed emergency supplies to flood-isolated communities in Nan Province's Doi Phu Kha area after roads and bridges were damaged, with an emergency shelter opened to coordinate relief efforts.

Minister Opens Doi Phu Kha Emergency Shelter, Deploys Helicopters
2h ago Khaosod

On August 21, 2025, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin instructed ministry agencies to accelerate aid to people affected by flooding in Nan Province, particularly in the Doi Phu Kha area where multiple communities are isolated due to damaged roads and bridges. An emergency shelter has been opened at Doi Phu Kha National Park to receive affected residents and coordinate urgent relief efforts.

Floodwaters have made several transport routes impassable, and temporary bailey bridges have not yet been installed. Ground vehicle assistance is therefore limited, prompting the ministry to coordinate with Nan Province and related foundations to deliver food, drinking water, and essential supplies to stranded communities.

Minister Suchart emphasized that the ministry's strength lies in its capacity and equipment to reach areas inaccessible by ground transport, particularly ministry helicopters capable of rapidly delivering food, water, and survival kits to remote or cut-off zones. "The priority now is getting aid to people as quickly as possible," he said. "Some areas cannot be reached by vehicles, but our helicopters can support the mission and deliver essentials, which is a key strength of the ministry in handling emergencies."

Dr. Raviwan Phurideach, the ministry's permanent secretary, reported that on August 21, the Northern Regional Operations Center coordinated with Nan's Natural Resources and Environment Office to deploy two ministry helicopters (numbered 1117 and 5120) carrying supplies to two villages in Pua District—Ban Nam Khwang and Ban Pha Wiang—that have been cut off by road damage. The mission includes 600 boxed meals and 80 survival kits, with flights scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., and a third flight planned for the morning of August 22.

Minister Suchart also emphasized the use of satellite imagery technology from GISTDA to support situation management. Real-time satellite imagery allows officials to assess ground conditions and plan routes and aid distribution points efficiently. The ministry is leveraging both personnel and helicopter resources, supported by satellite data, to respond effectively to the emergency.

On August 22, Bang Khae Police Station commander Pol. Col. Anant Worsart ordered rapid-response officers to apprehend a 49-year-old man named Pairat (surname withheld) in the Anusawari subdistrict area of Bang Khae. Officers recovered a homemade pen-type pistol and one round of ammunition from his possession.

The arrest occurred after rapid-response officers on patrol spotted Pairat standing in the soi and observed him acting nervously upon seeing the police, as if he was concealing something illegal. Officers stopped him and conducted a search, discovering the black homemade pistol with one round loaded and ready to fire hidden inside his left shoe.

When questioned, Pairat admitted the weapon and ammunition were his. He stated he had manufactured the gun himself and carried it for self-defense, believing no one would notice it. He became alarmed when he encountered the police officers.

Pairat faces charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition, and carrying a firearm and ammunition in a city, village, or public area without reasonable cause or urgent necessity. The case is being processed further by authorities.

A massive fire broke out at a plywood manufacturing facility in Nong Prueau subdistrict, Panasnikorn District, Chon Buri at 1 a.m. on August 22, prompting Panasnikorn Police Station to dispatch officers and firefighting units from multiple areas to the scene. The blaze engulfed two factory warehouses with intense flames and plumes of dark smoke rising high into the sky, requiring firefighters to simultaneously spray water from numerous fire trucks to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring areas. Despite over five hours of continuous firefighting efforts by all units working at full capacity with more than 20 fire trucks on scene, the fire remained uncontrolled as of 6:30 a.m., with flames continuing to flare up intermittently inside the warehouses. Firefighting officials attributed the difficulty in controlling the blaze to the large warehouse area and the abundance of plywood inside, which are highly combustible materials that generate intense heat and cause recurring ignition. Authorities are currently continuing suppression efforts while assessing damage and securing the surrounding area, with the cause of the fire and estimated loss of property still under detailed investigation.

Heavy Rain Warning Issued for 26 Thai Provinces
3h ago Khaosod

On August 22, 2569, the Meteorological Department forecasts thunderstorms and heavy rain in some areas across Thailand over the next 24 hours, particularly in the western regions of the northern, central, and eastern zones. A monsoon trough is moving northward across the upper northern region and northern Laos, interacting with a depression near Hainan Island in China. The strengthening southwest monsoon is affecting the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Residents should remain alert for hazards from heavy and accumulated rainfall, which could trigger flash floods, flooding, and overflowing banks, especially in sloping terrain near water channels and low-lying areas. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are moderately strong, with heights of 2–3 meters; thunderstorm zones may see waves exceeding 3 meters. In the upper Gulf of Thailand, waves are approximately 2 meters, increasing beyond 2 meters in thunderstorm areas. Fishermen throughout the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand should exercise caution, avoid thunderstorm zones, and small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should stay ashore. The depression near Hainan is expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone and move onshore in the southern Guangdong province of China between August 24–25, 2569, but will not directly affect Thailand's weather. Travelers to that region should check conditions before departing.

For the next 24 hours from 06:00 today to 06:00 tomorrow:

Northern Region: Thunderstorms in 60 percent of the area with heavy rain in some places, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampun, Lamphun, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phetchabun, and Tak provinces. Low 22–26°C, high 31–34°C. Southwest winds 10–20 km/h.

Northeastern Region: Thunderstorms in 40 percent of the area with heavy rain in some places, particularly in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, and Nakhon Phanom provinces. Low 23–24°C, high 31–33°C. Southwest winds 10–20 km/h.

Central Region: Thunderstorms in 60 percent of the area with heavy rain in some places, particularly in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Ratchaburi, and Kanchanaburi provinces. Low 23–25°C, high 32–34°C. Southwest winds 10–25 km/h.

Eastern Region: Thunderstorms in 60 percent of the area with heavy rain in some places, particularly in Nakhon Nayok, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chanthaburi, and Trat provinces. Low 23–27°C, high 31–33°C. Southwest winds 20–35 km/h. Sea waves approximately 2 meters; higher than 2 meters in thunderstorm zones.

Southern Region (East Coast): Thunderstorms in 30 percent of the area, mainly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Surat Thani provinces. Low 23–25°C, high 30–37°C. From Surat Thani northward: southwest winds 20–35 km/h; sea waves 1–2 meters nearshore, approximately 2 meters offshore, exceeding 2 meters in thunderstorm zones. From Nakhon Si Thammarat southward: southwest winds 15–35 km/h.

Temple Land Dispute Erupts in Surin as Heir Claims Ownership

A Surin heir has disputed the temple's ownership of 21 rai of land and begun excavation, claiming it as state property, while villagers who collectively funded the 1998 purchase defend their decades-old claim.

Temple Land Dispute Erupts in Surin as Heir Claims Ownership
9h ago Khaosod

Residents of Khao To village in Surin province are rallying to defend temple land after an heir claimed ownership of the property and began earthwork to reclaim it. The disputed land, about 21 rai in size located south of Khao To Temple in Phanom Dong Rak district, was originally sold to an intermediary by the heir's deceased father, then resold to the temple in 1998 for 180,000 baht. Villagers say they collectively raised funds through ordination and merit-making ceremonies over many years to pay for the land.

The heir recently disputed the temple's ownership and brought in heavy machinery to excavate the area, claiming it as state land (public property). Pennapha Suebsao, 39, a village representative leading the defense effort, said the villagers do not understand why the heir is now reclaiming land that was legitimately sold decades ago. She emphasized that many villagers willingly donated to support the purchase and questioned the sudden reversal. The community has appealed for a fair investigation into the land's documentation and legal status. Attempts to interview the heir about the dispute were unsuccessful.

The case involves questions about state land status and requires verification of sales documents and ownership records from relevant authorities to reach a clear resolution.

Fine Arts Department Removes Final Skeletal Remains from Ancient Site

Archaeologists from Thailand's Fine Arts Department have removed seven ancient skeletons, estimated at 1,500–2,000 years old, from an excavation site in Phetchaburi province using specialized conservation techniques and a 10-ton crane.

Fine Arts Department Removes Final Skeletal Remains from Ancient Site
9h ago Khaosod

At the Don Yai Thong archaeological excavation site in Ban Don Phlap, Samot Phraeao subdistrict, Ban Lad district, Phetchaburi province, archaeologists from the Fine Arts Department's Ratchaburi office coordinated with conservation science personnel to relocate ancient human skeletal remains estimated to be 1,500–2,000 years old. Using a 10-ton crane, officials lifted two sets of support bases containing a total of seven skeletons: set one holding skeletons numbered 5–8 (four skeletons) and set two holding skeletons numbered 9–11 (three skeletons). Each base measured approximately 1 meter wide and 2.5 meters long, weighing 1.2–1.5 tons.

Before extraction, conservation staff excavated soil around each skeleton on all four sides in a rectangular pattern and covered the remains with acid-free paper. The skeletons were then sprayed with distilled water at intervals and sealed with aluminum foil sheets to prevent chemical contamination. Polyurethane foam was injected into the gaps to protect both the skeletal remains and the supporting soil layer from damage. The remains were scheduled to be transported to the Science Conservation Center in Khlong Ha subdistrict, Khlong Luang district, Pathum Thani, on the morning of August 22, 2026.

Navy Seizes Two AK-47s In Weapons Smuggling Bust From Cambodia

Thai Navy officers intercepted a speedboat near Trat and arrested three suspects with two AK-47 rifles and ammunition smuggled from Cambodia through Chang Channel on August 22.

Navy Seizes Two AK-47s In Weapons Smuggling Bust From Cambodia
10h ago Khaosod

Trat — Naval officers raced in speedboats to intercept a weapons trafficking network smuggling military arms from Cambodia, arresting three suspects and seizing two AK-47 rifles and large quantities of ammunition. On August 22, Sub-Lieutenant Phitthak Kitti of Laem Ngop Naval Police Station received coordination from the Royal Thai Navy's First Naval Area Command Intelligence Division that illegal military weapons would be smuggled from a neighboring country into Laem Ngop District via speedboat through Chang Channel.

Phitthak planned an arrest operation, deploying Ensign Ratchasit Plai Kong, commander of Laem Ngop Naval Police station, with a crew of three in speedboats to intercept at Waterfall Tharmaiyom Pier in South Chang Island, Chang District, Trat Province. At 5:00 p.m., the intelligence team radioed that a suspected speedboat had entered Chang Channel. Officers pursued and coordinated with the police team stationed at Direck Pier in Klongai Subdistrict, Laem Ngop District, to intercept. The suspects, recognizing they were being chased, accelerated toward Direck Pier where plainclothes naval officers were waiting.

At 6:26 p.m., the speedboat arrived at the pier and officers arrested three suspects: two men and one woman. A preliminary search found two AK-47 rifles and large quantities of ammunition packed in fertilizer bags containing metal boxes of cartridges, awaiting explosive ordnance disposal personnel to open them safely.

Ensign Ratchasit reported he received orders to intercept the suspect vessel near Waterfall Tharmaiyom Bridge in the afternoon and await communication from the naval intelligence unit. At 5:00 p.m., he received a radio alert and began pursuit when the speedboat passed at high speed, coordinating with the Direck Pier team. The arrest was completed at 6:26 p.m.

Sub-Lieutenant Phitthak said the operation followed intelligence from informants tracking weapons trafficking networks along the Thai-Cambodian border. Intelligence indicated military weapons would be transported by sea from a neighboring country to Direck Pier in Klongai Subdistrict, Laem Ngop District. After locating the route and timing, officers arrested the three Trat Province suspects, though investigators are still determining the final destination. The source is from a neighboring country.

Phitthak noted this likely represents part of a larger trafficking network or criminal organization, as sea transport was chosen because land borders are sealed. The Laem Ngop pier route requires passing through only one security checkpoint, or suspects could bypass security entirely through other routes. Officers found a red SUV with license plate number Kor 2739 from Trat. At 8:00 p.m., Sub-Lieutenant Phitthak and naval officers took the three suspects and seized weapons to the police station for further investigation.

A minibus carrying 13 Laotian passengers collided with a three-wheeled vehicle (tuk-tuk) on Friendship Road in Udon Thani city on August 21, leaving two elderly occupants injured. The minibus driver, Tosaporn Phochernsri, 37, from Bangkok, reported that after picking up Laotian passengers at the Thai-Laos Friendship Gate in Nong Khai and completing passport procedures, he was heading to Bangkok when he spotted the tuk-tuk suddenly changing lanes. Despite attempting to brake, he could not stop in time. The Bangkok-registered minibus had brake marks over 50 meters long at the impact site. CCTV footage showed the minibus traveling at 80-99 kilometers per hour in the rightmost lane when the tuk-tuk, initially in the middle lane, shifted into its path. Police suspect the tuk-tuk driver was attempting to reach a U-turn point ahead but are awaiting full investigation results. The minibus carried 14 people including the driver; most passengers sustained only minor injuries from shock. The tuk-tuk, which could not be legally registered for commercial transport use, had no insurance. Nearby motorcycle repair shop owner Atit, 43, witnessed the collision as the tuk-tuk crashed into an area in front of his shop. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage, witness statements, and interviewing both drivers to determine the exact cause.
