Thailand Orders Box Jellyfish Alert After Teen Dies

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin expressed condolences for the death of a 13-year-old boy from box jellyfish poisoning while swimming at Ban Fai Tha beach in Sichon district, Nakhon Si Thammarat on August 1, 2025. He ordered the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources to coordinate with relevant agencies to closely monitor the situation and intensify public awareness about jellyfish prevention and first aid to prevent recurring incidents and reduce potential harm.

Dr. Pinsak Suraswadi, director of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, stated that local agencies are coordinating with provincial health officials, local government organizations, and beach operators to continuously monitor conditions and alert the public and tourists, especially in high-risk areas. Water activities should be suspended if venomous jellyfish are spotted or authorities issue warnings, and people are urged not to touch jellyfish directly and to strictly follow official instructions.

Correct first-aid procedures include: immediately remove the victim from water to prevent drowning, have them lie still, and call emergency medical services at 1669. Pour vinegar continuously on the affected area for at least 30 seconds to inhibit toxin release, then use tweezers to remove any tentacle fragments. If the victim stops breathing or their heart stops, perform CPR immediately while awaiting hospital transport.

Using fresh water, plain water, alcohol, or rubbing, massaging, and scrubbing the wound is strictly prohibited as it triggers the stinging cells to release more toxin, which can be life-threatening. Vinegar inhibits the stinging cells' function but does not relieve pain. The Department has installed vinegar stations with first-aid instructions at public beaches in high-risk areas and educated tourism operators ahead of jellyfish season. The public can access situation updates and jellyfish information through the Marine Warning system at warning.dmcr.go.th and the Marine Warning mobile application.

A shocking incident unfolded when a man who had hitched a ride suddenly became agitated and lunged for the steering wheel while the vehicle was in motion, nearly causing a serious accident. At 2:45 p.m. on August 3, police Deputy Inspector Anusilp Khleakaratop of Phimai Station, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, received a report of a man acting erratically along the Phimai-Chakrachak road near the entrance to Ban Taan in Samroedrith Subdistrict, Phimai District. Officers from Phimai Station and rescue personnel from Sawang Metta Nakhon Ratchasima Foundation rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found three residents restraining a 58-year-old man named A (alias) from Chakrachak District, who was lying on the grass. The man appeared exhausted and remained still after neighbors had subdued him and locked his limbs. According to the driver's account, he was traveling with friends within Phimai District when the man asked for a ride. When they were roughly one kilometer away from Phimai town, the passenger suddenly became agitated and lunged for the steering wheel, forcing the driver to brake hard and pull over to the roadside. The driver and other neighbors then rushed to restrain the man and hold him on the ground, calling police immediately. Officers later determined that the man had a history of mental illness and was likely suffering from medication non-compliance, which had triggered the agitated episode. Relatives were to be notified, and rescue personnel transported the man to Phimai Hospital for medical evaluation and continued treatment.

Two Students Fall From Sixth-Floor School Building in Bangkok
3 Aug Khaosod

At 4:00 p.m. on August 3, 2025, Deputy Investigation Officer Phuritsada Phangsong of Sai Yai Police Station received a report that two students had fallen from a school building and sustained serious injuries. The incident occurred at a well-known school in the Sai Yai area, Bangkok. Police Captain Nathachapon Kiram, commander of Sai Yai Police Station, rushed to the scene with medical personnel and rescue teams from Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, CGH Sai Yai Hospital, the Sai Yai Civil Defense Volunteers, and the Por Teck Tung Foundation.

At the front of the six-story school building, rescue workers found two injured students lying on the ground in critical condition with labored breathing. The male student was 15 years old and the female student was 16 years old; both were Grade 10 classmates wearing school uniforms. Rescue personnel immediately performed CPR and rushed the male student to CGH Sai Yai Hospital and the female student to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital.

At the scene on the sixth-floor balcony where the incident occurred, officers found a pair of male and female school shoes neatly placed together and documented them as evidence. Witness investigation revealed that the two students were in a romantic relationship. During the period after classes ended, they walked together to the sixth-floor balcony, removed their shoes and placed them together, embraced, and then decided to jump. Fortunately, their bodies struck the branches of a large tree and an awning of the building before hitting the ground, which reduced the impact force somewhat. Though both remained alive, they sustained serious injuries.

Police initially suspect the cause may stem from personal relationship problems or academic stress. However, investigators from Sai Yai Police Station are continuing to interview homeroom teachers, instructors, close friends, and the parents of both students in detail to determine the true cause and motive for the incident.

Southern Border Violence Demands Return to Peace Talks
3 Aug Khaosod

The southern border provinces have erupted again in violence, a development that bodes ill for peace-building and leaves residents living in fear. The recent string of incidents began with a car bomb at Tanah Merah hotel in Narathiwat city, fortunately causing no casualties, only property damage. A far graver attack followed in Tanah Merah Mas district, Satun subdistrict, when armed militants arrived in a pickup truck and motorcycles and assaulted a security checkpoint with military-grade weapons, killing five rangers and wounding numerous civilians. In response, military commanders declared a nationwide martial law escalation across Narathiwat, empowering security personnel to conduct checkpoints, raids, searches of suspect areas, arrests, detention, and armed retaliation to suppress and apprehend the perpetrators. Authorities have issued arrest warrants for two suspects and are questioning several others, with more arrests expected pending investigation. Care must be taken to ensure martial law does not harm uninvolved civilians. An earlier incident involving ranger deaths remains unresolved. Officers from Tak Bai police station came under fire during an arrest operation, resulting in two police deaths and three wounded. The following day brought further attacks: gunfire on hotels in Yala city and a bomb thrown at a temple in Pattani province. These incidents represent serious unrest in the southern border region. However, the government continues to pursue dialogue with opposition groups. Defense Minister Anucha Boonthiam recently visited Malaysia to confer with the Malaysian defense minister, reaffirming Thailand's commitment to advancing the peace process while maintaining security, improving living standards, and building confidence among all stakeholders to achieve lasting peace in the southern border. This reflects a positive direction. The urgent question now is how quickly to return to the peace negotiation table and avoid prolonged stalemate.

Police Launch Cybersecurity Teacher Program in Region 8

Police are training 242 officers across Region 8 as cybersecurity educators to teach communities how to recognize and avoid online scams, which cost Thais billions annually.

Police Launch Cybersecurity Teacher Program in Region 8
3 Aug Khaosod

Deputy National Police Chief Trairongk Phiwphairn, serving as deputy director of the National Police Office's Information Technology Crime Suppression Center and spokesman, delivered a keynote address titled "Cyber Vaccination: Building Public Immunity Through Model Teachers" to 242 officers attending the second cohort of the Integrated Cybercrime Prevention Model Teachers seminar across all Region 8 police stations on August 3, 2025, at the Region 8 Police Training Center in Surat Thani.

Trairongk stated that online crime represents a new security threat causing massive global damage worth trillions of baht annually, affecting Thais across all professions with losses totaling tens of billions of baht yearly. Criminals typically employ five psychological manipulation tactics—fear, greed, love, empathy, and urgency—to attack victims' minds and trigger poor decision-making with severe financial consequences.

The role of cybersecurity model teachers is critical: they must work in the field to build cyber-protection awareness among all community groups, teaching people to recognize scams and follow protective practices: don't click links, don't install apps from suspicious links, don't trust, don't rush, don't transfer money, don't share OTP codes, and hang up immediately if contacted by fraudsters.

Trairongk added that the program targets each model teacher reaching 100 households in their area to develop proactive cybercrime defense capacity and build community resilience against digital threats.

Editorial: Can Thailand's Reoffender Law Prevent Future Crimes?
3 Aug Khaosod

The case of Thanachai Kaeodhong, known as "Pong," has raised public questions about Thailand's 2022 Prevention of Reoffending Act for sexual and violent crimes. Although the Department of Corrections confirmed it followed every procedural step—from risk assessment by the prison committee to prosecutors' recommendations, court filings, and a two-year monitoring order requiring quarterly check-ins, restricted activities, and rehabilitation—all measures ultimately failed to prevent the tragedy that occurred. This highlights a critical societal issue that merits focus, rather than finger-pointing at individual agencies. The fundamental questions are whether existing measures are sufficiently stringent, whether three-month reporting intervals are too long, how compliance with activity restrictions is enforced, and how effectively corrections, probation, police, and local administrators coordinate when offenders change residence. Legal experts worry that the law emphasizes monitoring rather than control—officials have no power to intervene unless the offender violates conditions or commits a new crime, making surveillance merely reactive rather than proactively preventive. Risk assessment standards also warrant review, as inmates with histories of attempted murder or drug involvement should warrant intensive monitoring far exceeding basic periodic reporting, which may fall below the actual risk level. While no law can guarantee reoffenders never strike again, sound legislation must minimize such risks and enable authorities to efficiently monitor high-risk individuals without unnecessarily infringing on fundamental rights. The five-body burial case is not merely shocking crime, but reveals critical gaps in the Prevention of Reoffending Act and post-release surveillance systems that inadequately address high-risk offenders. It is time for the government, Justice Ministry, Department of Corrections, probation office, police, and all relevant agencies to earnestly review and plug these loopholes to ensure the highest public safety.

Actor Denies False Rumors About Actress Mother's Care
3 Aug Khaosod

Prominent actor Binit Banleuruedit has denied rumors spreading online that actress Nai Jaroen Pura had placed her mother in the "Baan Suk Sud Tai" elderly care facility founded by Binit. In a live social media broadcast, Binit firmly denied the claims and revealed the source of the confusion. Nai Jaroen Pura stressed that her family has provided excellent care for her mother throughout her life.

Binit explained that the misunderstanding likely arose from confusion with another elderly resident at the facility named "Auntie Usa" who may have known Nai Jaroen Pura's mother, leading to inaccurate reporting. He emphasized that Nai Jaroen Pura's mother does not have the name Usa. Binit further stressed that Nai Jaroen Pura is deeply caring and takes her mother everywhere she travels, leaving no reason to place her in a facility. The false rumors caused distress to the family, prompting them to go live to clarify the facts.

Nai Jaroen Pura herself came forward to explain that her family has personally provided excellent care for her mother, including medical treatment, daily care, and companionship at all times. She emphasized that the clarification was not intended to suggest nursing homes are inadequate facilities, as many provide quality care and families have legitimate reasons for such decisions. However, in this case, the reports are false and have created misunderstandings among the public and hurt her family's feelings. She appealed to the public not to share or spread unverified information, noting that careless words can cause real harm to many people. She also expressed gratitude to Binit Banleuruedit for publicly clarifying the facts.
