Thailand Orders Closure of Three Polluting Factories in Prachinburi
Three polluting factories in Prachinburi have been shut down, with more closures planned. Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa vowed to act without favoritism, seize assets of illegal dumpers, and amend the law to increase penalties. He warned the public to avoid contact with contaminated water and to wash off immediately if exposed.
Speaking at 10:20 a.m. on October 14, 2026 at the Government House, Minister Varawut Silpa-archa outlined progress on addressing chemical leaks from factories in Prachinburi Province. Surveys by the Pollution Control Department and the Factory Department found only trace amounts of heavy metals, whose source could not be identified, while oil‑related chemicals had increased because of low water levels. He advised residents to avoid touching the water and to wash off promptly if they do come into contact. Three establishments have already been closed under Sections 37 and 39 of the Factory Act, with additional shutdowns planned; using Section 39 for immediate closure may expose the government to lawsuits. The minister said legal action will be taken to recover damages from polluters affecting people and the environment, pursuing the fullest extent of the law. He added that current legislation is outdated and penalties are weak, so the law will be amended to raise fines and reclassify illegal dumping of industrial waste as a financial offense enabling asset seizure. When asked about nominee companies or firms with prominent surnames, he replied that he does not care whether they are nominees or bear any particular name; if they violate the conditions set by law, legal steps will be taken to the fullest.
