Thailand Prepares Flood Plans for 2026 IMF-World Bank Meetings
Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ek Nitithamnopphas said the country is ready to host the 2026 IMF‑World Bank Annual Meetings and has prepared comprehensive flood‑response plans. He explained that preparations include consulting meteorologists, coordinating with disaster officials, and testing evacuation procedures, while also addressing potential protests by allocating lawful spaces for dissent. Over 15,000 participants have registered for the October 12‑18, 2026 event at Bangkok’s National Queen Sirikit Convention Centre.
Ek Nitithamnopphas reiterated that Thailand is ready to host the IMF‑World Bank meeting and has prepared flood‑prevention measures. He said the plans were developed after reviewing meteorological data and coordinating with the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, using experience from previous floods to establish alert levels and evacuation routes. He expressed confidence that the IMF and World Bank understand that natural disasters cannot be controlled, but still trust Thailand’s capability to successfully host the event.
He noted that Thailand’s recent flood experience ensures it can handle any situation, including moving people to safety if water levels rise, and that all systems have been tested. Regarding possible protests during the meeting, Ek Nitithamnopphas said demonstrations should be allowed within the law, with the IMF and World Bank allocating specific spaces for expression so the proceedings remain orderly and Thailand’s reputation is upheld. He urged Thais to be good hosts, welcoming global financial leaders to showcase the country’s strengths on the world stage.
