On August 1, 2025, police led by Deputy Commander Theerachat Theerachatdhamma ordered the arrest of Kanthaphum (aka Aek), 46, based on a Nonthaburi Court arrest warrant issued March 28, 2024, for nighttime theft. Officers arrested him at Bangkok's Central Station.

The suspect committed theft at a convenience store on December 18 and 19, 2567 by posing as a customer. He placed a backpack in a shopping basket, removed beer from a cooler and hid it in the backpack, then positioned the bag near an ice cooler near the exit. He purchased only ice at checkout using cash, then retrieved the backpack and left without paying for the beer.

Store staff discovered the thefts through CCTV footage and found the suspect attempted the same scheme a third time in the same month. Security recognized his face from previous footage and confronted him until he confessed. Investigators learned he had targeted multiple nearby convenience store branches with identical methods, prompting store managers to warn each other via group chat.

While being processed for fingerprinting, the suspect requested a bathroom break and attempted to flee. Officers later tracked him traveling from Southern Thailand back to Bangkok and arrested him again. During this second arrest, he again tried to escape by requesting bathroom access and offering to take out garbage, but officers remained vigilant.

Under interrogation, the suspect admitted that in late 2567 he opened a papaya salad shop in Muang Thonburi that failed. Struggling with severe alcohol addiction, he decided to steal beer from convenience stores, timing his thefts during busy customer periods to avoid detection. He was transferred to Pak Kret police station for legal proceedings.

Eight Million Methamphetamine Pills Seized From Laos

Thai and Laotian authorities seized eight million methamphetamine pills in Chiang Rai's Thung District on August 1, tracing the shipment to Myanmar production facilities and a smuggling network operating through Laos.

On August 1, 2026, officers from the Narcotics Suppression Bureau Division 2, working with special forces from the 31st Ranger Regiment and security personnel, seized eight million methamphetamine pills in a forest area near Ban Sawwa village, Mueang Subdistrict, Thung District, Chiang Rai Province.

Investigations revealed the drugs originated from production facilities operated by a criminal network in the Ban Pun Ako area of Shan State, Myanmar. The shipment was transported to Muang Phong in Laos, crossed the Mekong River into Muang Tan Phueng and Ban Huay Sai in Bokeo Province, Laos, then smuggled across the Thai border through natural routes in Muang Yai Subdistrict, Wieng Kaen District, Chiang Rai. After crossing the border, the drugs were moved through Wieng Kaen District toward Ban Tha Charoen in Chiang Khong District, passing through Khun Tan and Phayamengrai districts before reaching Ban Sawwa in Thung District, where officials conducted the seizure.

Intelligence indicates the network belongs to Long Saeli, believed to be hiding in Laos. The operation uses ethnic minority smugglers based in Wieng Kaen District and Laos to transport drugs across the border. The seized pills bear a "999" stamp, a marking used by clandestine drug-pressing operations along border villages that source methamphetamine powder from Ban Pun Ako in Tum Muang, Shan State, before pressing and stamping the pills themselves.

Chiang Mai Buddhist Officials Warn Monks Over Temple Parties

Chiang Mai Buddhist authorities have warned monks to stop holding private parties at temples during Khao Phansa after receiving reports of entertainment workers and alcohol present in monks' quarters across the province.

Chiang Mai Buddhist Officials Warn Monks Over Temple Parties
1 Aug Khaosod

Chiang Mai — On August 1, 2026, Buddhist authorities in Chiang Mai have warned monks to stop allegedly holding private parties at temples during Khao Phansa after receiving reports that entertainment workers, alcohol and groups of monks were being brought together inside monks' quarters.

Khao Phansa is the traditional three-month rains retreat during which Buddhist monks remain at their temples and devote more time to religious practice.

On Saturday at 08:50, a source from an inspection committee under the Chiang Mai Provincial Ecclesiastical Office said authorities had received reports, photographs and a list of monks allegedly involved in gatherings at temples across the province.

The allegations involve monks ranging from junior temple residents to abbots, according to the source.

The monks were reportedly arranging late-night parties inside their living quarters and inviting entertainment workers to attend. Alcohol, including beer and spirits, was allegedly stored in refrigerators and ice boxes at the venues.

The source said members of the group had shared photographs from the gatherings in private Line chats, with some images later reaching provincial ecclesiastical authorities.

Some monks allegedly drove their own cars or used ride-hailing services to reach meeting points at different temples. They reportedly avoided using temple drivers because they feared information about the gatherings would be leaked.

The report included detailed descriptions of vehicles allegedly used by monks from several temples. Names of the temples and individuals are being withheld because the allegations have not been independently verified and no formal disciplinary findings have been announced.

The source also alleged that an entertainment worker previously sought medical testing after becoming concerned about possible exposure to an infection following an encounter with members of the group.

The worker reportedly threatened to file a complaint if the test returned a positive result. No infection was detected, however, and the matter did not proceed further.

Wallop Namwongphrom, a member of the Chiang Mai Provincial Cultural Council and an adviser to the provincial monastic authorities, said Khao Phansa was traditionally a period when monks remained at their temples during the rainy season.

He said some monks had nevertheless been accused of secretly leaving their temples or gathering inside monks' quarters to hold parties.

Wallop said such behaviour could amount to a minor monastic offence but remained inappropriate and damaging to public confidence.

"I would like to warn monks who regularly organise parties to stop, regardless of the date or month," he said. "If they are caught or the matter becomes public, it will cause widespread damage."

He added that Buddhism and temples were not inherently damaged by such incidents, but that individual monks brought disrepute upon themselves through their conduct.

"During Khao Phansa, please stop for the sake of the monastic order and public trust," he concluded.

1 Aug Khaosod

On August 1, 2025, Kraiwit Pirisananuntakul, Bhumjaithai MP for Ang Thong, addressed the Senate election fraud case that opposition parties have raised recently. He expressed no concern about the possibility of party dissolution, noting that the matter is already under review by the Election Commission and should follow proper legal procedures.

When asked whether the party could prove its innocence if accusers presented evidence, Kraiwit said he welcomes scrutiny as a normal process. He stated that while the opposition claims to have evidence, the party remains confident in its integrity and that all nine individuals named have denied involvement in the Senate election irregularities.

Regarding the timing of the opposition's accusations amid Cabinet reshuffling reports, Kraiwit suggested they aim to pressure the Election Commission to keep the case moving. He flatly denied claims of internal party divisions or "two in one" conflicts, calling such stories baseless and amusing to party leaders. He emphasized that Bhumjaithai is known for its unity and solidarity.
