Labor Leader Panas Vows Campaign Against Social Security Board Rival
1d ago Khaosod

On July 9, 2025, Panas Thaiyaluan, chairman of the Thai Labor Confederation and employer-side social security board candidate, posted on his personal Facebook account announcing that starting July 15, his team would conduct visits across all 287 affiliated unions to highlight what he characterized as a rival candidate's scheme to control the social security board employer-side seat.

Panas alleged that despite claims of protecting the social security fund, the rival actually seeks to raid it—a tactic that previously failed when employers and government blocked it. He stated that comprehensive evidence from meeting records supports this claim and urged workers to disregard the rival's efforts, describing them as mere distraction tactics.

Panas then formally announced his official slate of seven board candidates, assigned ballot numbers 63 through 69, with detailed profiles to follow. He emphasized six core principles shared by all candidates: long-term industrial experience independent of political influence; over 10 years of labor leadership; previous service on tripartite labor bodies; expertise in negotiation and labor law focused on protecting workers and maximizing social security fund benefits; integrity and transparency with broad worker acceptance; and commitment to the tripartite system respecting all parties' rights.

Panas invited insured workers to participate in elections scheduled for September 27, 2025, and announced he would present a "10-point platform" with gradual detailed explanations to follow.

Songkhla Tourism Surges to 3 Million Visitors, 20 Billion Baht
1d ago Khaosod

Government spokesman revealed that Songkhla Province attracted over 3 million visitors in the first half of 2025, generating more than 20 billion baht in tourism revenue. The government urged confidence in its preparedness for the upcoming rainy season while inviting both domestic and international tourists to experience the region's culture and local food, aiming to stimulate the grassroots economy.

On July 9, 2025, the Office of the Government Spokesman, led by Deputy Government Spokespersons Ms. Lalida Pariswivattana and Ms. Ploythale Luksameesangchan, visited Songkhla Province with media representatives to raise awareness of the province's potential and promote quality tourism alongside grassroots economic development and income generation for local communities.

The delegation visited historical and cultural attractions in Songkhla, including the Old City area, watched performances of Nora—a UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage of humanity—and visited the Songkhla National Museum and Samila Cape, key landmarks reflecting the province's cultural and tourism potential. The government aims to leverage this cultural capital as soft power to create economic added value and elevate Songkhla from a transit city to a premier tourism destination while distributing income sustainably to communities.

Songkhla recorded 3,125,475 visitors from January to May 2025, generating approximately 20,636.15 million baht in revenue—8,879.13 million from Thai tourists and 11,757.02 million from foreign visitors, demonstrating tourism's tangible impact on the local economy.

Ms. Lalida invited all Thai and foreign visitors to experience Songkhla's multicultural society, distinctive cuisine, and charming community lifestyle. She noted that approximately 3 million tourists have visited since early this year, bringing in over 20 billion baht. Regarding recovery after recent flooding in Hat Yai District, she stated that locals reported tourism is returning and communities are fully prepared to welcome visitors. The government is ready for the rainy season and asked the public and tourists to visit with confidence.

Although current visitor numbers remain slightly below pre-flood levels, the difference is minimal, and confidence in Songkhla's tourism appeal continues to grow.

Ms. Ploythale highlighted Songkhla's architectural beauty and culinary distinctiveness, inviting cultural tourism enthusiasts to experience the old city, particularly the Red Rice Mill, to understand the region's history and the harmonious coexistence of Songkhla, Malay, Thai, and Chinese communities.

July 9, 2026 – While conducting traffic patrols in the Ban Lamung area of Chonburi province, Lt. Col. Nateekarn Yodsrouy, deputy traffic commander of Ban Lamung Police Station, discovered the burning SUV parked beside the road near a tire shop close to Chaiyapruet Lane, Moo 4, Nong Prueao Subdistrict, Ban Lamung District. Ice Plant Shut Down Over Ammonia Leak in Suphan Buri

Industrial Minister Warawuth Silpagarcha and Suphanburi Provincial Industrial Officer Wichyaporn Ploytuptim inspected the ice manufacturing plant operated by Buanvarn 2019 Limited Company in Dem Bang Nang Buach District after an ammonia leak occurred on July 8, 2025. The inspection revealed that multiple schools within a 200-meter to 1-kilometer radius were affected by the incident. However, provincial health officials and hospital administrators reported no serious injuries, though some students experienced respiratory irritation and nasal irritation that will be treated accordingly.

"We consider ourselves fortunate that there were no serious injuries," Warawuth said. "We have instructed the factory to conduct thorough inspections of all areas, and they have cooperated well. The factory has been ordered to temporarily suspend operations under the Factory Act, B.E. 2535. Once repairs are completed and the Department of Industrial Works certifies that safety standards are met, the factory will be permitted to resume operations."

Warawuth urged all factories nationwide to remain vigilant as temperatures rise, paying special attention to joint points, production lines, electrical connections, and transformers that could become accident hazards. He also appealed to local administrators to report any suspicious or unlicensed factories operating in their areas to the Ministry of Industry hotline 1564 (available 24 hours) or to their provincial industrial offices. The ministry will take strict legal action against any unlicensed or illegal operations. "Local authorities know best whether facilities in their areas have obtained proper permits," he stated. "If permits are legitimate, we will conduct safety inspections using departmental standards. If not, we will enforce the law strictly to ensure industry genuinely benefits the public."

NBTC Chief Seeks Legal Review on Selection Committee Powers

NBTC Chairman Sopon Bunjaicharapruksa petitioned the Ombudsman to clarify whether a selection committee can review commissioners' qualifications after they've been appointed by royal decree and approved by the Senate.

NBTC Chief Seeks Legal Review on Selection Committee Powers
1d ago Khaosod

On July 9, 2025, the Ombudsman received a petition dated July 3 from NBTC Chairman Sopon Bunjaicharapruksa requesting intervention regarding the use of Council of State Opinion Nos. 1005-1006/2568 as a basis for actions affecting his status and duties. The petition asks the Ombudsman to either review the matter or forward it to the Council of State for reconsideration, with recommendations that relevant agencies suspend application of that opinion pending legal clarification.

The core issue concerns whether the original NBTC selection committee—whose mandate ended after completing the selection process—retains authority to verify or rule on the status of individuals already approved by the Senate and appointed by royal decree. Sopon argues that once the selection process concludes and appointees assume office, the selection committee's duties should end, noting that the Broadcasting Organization Act does not explicitly grant the committee power to revisit commissioner qualifications after appointment.

The petition references Constitutional Court Ruling 25-27/2555, which established that the selection committee is a temporary body created solely to nominate qualified commissioners. Once the process ends, the committee's mandate expires. This aligns with Senate secretariat opinions that Article 15/1 of the Broadcasting Organization Act limits the selection committee's authority to evaluating applicant qualifications only, with no provisions for post-appointment reviews.

The Ombudsman previously identified a legal gap on June 22, 2025, noting that the Broadcasting Organization Act lacks clear procedures for addressing commissioners who are later found to lack required qualifications or possess disqualifying characteristics. The Ombudsman recommended that the NBTC Office and Prime Minister's secretariat study amendments to clarify which agencies hold responsibility for post-appointment qualification reviews and removal procedures.

Middle East War Pushes Oil Prices, Strains Thai Food Industry

Middle East conflict is driving up oil and fertilizer costs, squeezing Thailand's food industry as manufacturers struggle to pass price increases to consumers. Bread, snacks, instant noodles, and soybean oil face the steepest pressure, with

Middle East War Pushes Oil Prices, Strains Thai Food Industry
1d ago Khaosod

Krungthai COMPASS warns that Middle East conflict is creating cost-push pressures through rising fertilizer and oil prices, unavoidably affecting Thailand's food industry production costs.

Four food products face the highest impact: bread and baked goods, snacks, instant noodles, and soybean oil. These rely heavily on imported raw materials and carry combined energy and transportation costs representing 77.2–82.7% of total production costs.

However, manufacturers can only pass 0.08–0.32% of a 1% cost increase to consumers, with snacks able to pass through the least at just 0.08%.

Food producers should urgently reduce cost vulnerability through three approaches: (1) Supply Chain Relocation—diversifying raw material sources and increasing domestic ingredient use; (2) AI Adoption—boosting efficiency, reducing waste, and extending product shelf life; and (3) Green & Energy Transition—investing in energy-efficient production technologies and alternative energy like biogas to build long-term sustainability.
