Thailand Tightens Myanmar Border Controls, Suspends Trade Facilitation
Thailand suspended trade at unauthorized border channels in Tak province for seven days after Myanmar clashes sent bullets across the border, injuring one civilian.
On November 2, 2026, Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswawathana disclosed that the government places utmost importance on the safety of lives and property along the Thai-Myanmar border. Security agencies in Mae Sot and Phop Phra districts, Tak province, have intensified control over border trade routes following clashes in Myanmar that sent bullets across the border, damaging homes and injuring one civilian who was treated at Mae Sot Hospital.
Lalida stated the Naresuan Force and local security agencies requested the Mae Sot Customs checkpoint to suspend import-export facilitation through unauthorized channels south of the First Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Mae Sot and in Phop Phra district for seven days, from October 30 to November 5, 2026, or until the situation eases. The measure aims to control the border, prevent the transport of goods that could support fighting factions in Myanmar, and reduce risks to local residents.
This suspension applies only to specific channels and areas as announced; it does not mean a full border closure or a halt to all Thai-Myanmar trade. Imports and exports through approved channels must still comply with laws and conditions set by relevant agencies. Operators should verify transport route status and commodity conditions with Mae Sot Customs before proceeding.
The government has instructed the Tak governor and security officials to closely monitor the situation and assist affected residents. Authorities have already deployed to the area to provide aid. The public and traders needing to travel or transport goods through border areas are urged to follow announcements from Tak province, the Naresuan Force, and Mae Sot Customs closely, as measures last until November 5 or until the situation improves. Routes will not automatically reopen when the deadline expires.
"The government confirms that the safety of border residents is the top priority. This trade control measure aims to mitigate impacts from the fighting and maintain order in the area, targeting only designated channels, not a full border closure. The government will monitor the situation closely while caring for the public and minimizing impact on border trade, and urges people to follow official information to avoid misunderstandings," Lalida said.
